Just got it the other day after finally getting Second Chapter completed. I'm sure other people are playing or have been playing, but I didn't see a topic for it. Please mark for spoilers as you go.

Quite enjoyed the Prologue, despite its brevity compared to FC and SC. Chapter 1 has been... weird so far. It feels very un-Trailsy. I mean, I'm looking forward to what they do with this cube space and everything, but I feel more like I'm playing a Mega Man Battle Network game, maybe even Saints Row IV, than what I've come to expect. It's been odd.

The Drifter can be the trigger. For some reason his music infuriates Braun and makes him go off.

So Drifter will start playing and everyone will freak out wondering if Braun is around to hear it.

Or the opposite! The Drifter is the only one that can calm the beast!

I read everything you said. I don't particularly have much to add to the discussion. even after watching it more than once I can say I never consciously made the connection that each character did in fact have their own separate mentor. I guess this kinda goes along with the fact that some of the mentors were more s***ty than others so it didn't seem like they all had one.

To befair, I never made that connection either until I started my reply to rebut-

all four of these endings are decided by the CIRCUMSTANCES rather than the CHARACTER. neither child has any say in their own destiny.

-and realized that Carter, Prezbo, and Cutty were each a main character in the kids' lives and it was only Bunny who really went far out of his way to fully realize and support someone else. I'm curious how something could be said for the interactions between Bodie and McNulty, and how someone to talk to may not always be the best thing in the wrong environment, that the solution is not nearly as simple as just having somebody there who gets you. Now I'm seeing Kima w/ Bunk, Sydnor w/ Herc, Prezbo and the schools, Carcetti and the Mayor's office... probably should just stick with the kids' parallels.

Also just read in a recent article from a radio interview with Cody Rhodes what WWE had in mind for him if he never left. One plan was for Stardust to be drafted to Raw and Cody Rhodes to be drafted to SmackDown, thus making him "appear" on both shows. Cody said he was down for the idea, as were several others. However, only one person was against it, and that person's answer had precedence over everyone else.

This is what I was hoping for with Kane. Korporate Kane would go to RAW with Mick and Steph, while the Demon Kane would be Daniel's heavy. But this was before the draft and Talking Smack and I would switch those right up.

Can you imagine Corporate Kane with Renee and Daniel on that talk show?

For sure. It's a very layered show and does a great job of illustrating how consequences impact all of the characters

Agreed. The entire show is like that. Hell, go back to Season 1. Bubbles had a similar situation to Randy where Kima(Carter) promised him help and support, but by passing it off to McNulty(Herc) who didn't understand the situation and didn't care like Kima did ends up dropping Bubbles(Randy) back into bad habits and bad company.

Without support from the brass, the media, the higher-ups, the Season 1 team couldn't continue going after Barksdale and had to make their case as it stood allowing Stringer Bell to go free and the money trail spiraling ever upwards was cut off until Season 5.

There are also other characters in the show who overcome their situations....

Michael chose Chris' help and support over Cutty's. Despite Cutty's innocent support, Michael didn't trust him thinking ulterior motives that Cutty didn't try and understand until it was already too late.

Dukie chose to go with Michael because he was forced off the road yet again by the school jumping him up away from everyone he knows to be alone in a situation he couldn't handle on his own. Due to Mike and Randy both leaving by the end of the school year, and Namond... being Namond, things still would've gone pretty bad with high school, but probably not nearly as sharp or as terrible. And who knows? Maybe the girl he fixed the fan for would've been some support.

Prezbo could've pressed harder. He could've had put in extra effort to help Dukie, but he gave up thanks to everyone around him having already given up. "He's just one kid. There'll be a whole new set of Dukies next year." That's despairing. Prez didn't push hard enough against that, and Dukie fell because no one gave him the support he needed to continue.

The show isn't just the failure of institutions and insurmountable obstacles placed in front of you. It's about how success and hope spots can be grasped if you have a solid enough foundation of support or people to help you forward. It's about effort, perseverance, and fighting against the heavy heavy current that wants to keep nothing changing and rising above, but it can be fought through with time, attention, and understanding oneself and others.

Bunny understood Namond and could relate to him, changing tactics until Namond could relate back. Bunny talked with everyone else in Namond's life from his principal to his mother to his father to his coach and went to bat for him in ways no one else would. Namond succeeded because someone took the extra time others didn't have or give to push for this one person to make a better life. Cutty was distracted and didn't understand. Carter didn't understand the friend he had or come back for Randy when he needed him. Prezbo fell into the cogs of the machine. We followed Mike and Dukie the next season because they were the only two supports left for each other from before, and when those broke, they broke too.

...Longer post than I initially meant.

Hell, the only thing I wanted to post about was how hope still existed through perseverance and doing the hard stuff.

Bubbles is that example of someone hit by so many bad things, but with lots of effort and people to help him rise up like Waylon, Kima, and his sister, he was able to go up those stairs finally.

I had a sig a long time ago from Alan Sepinwall I think where "A man walks upstairs and someone gets shot in the head. These are the feel-good moments." It's so true.

While I agree it would be good to see, there are some other aspects to note as well. Each of the characters had family problems, had a mentor they looked up to that, and different points of Season 4 where with a little extra care or attention their circumstances absolutely would have changed even if only slightly. The places they went in Season 5 were determined by their paths in Season 4.

You can't change family, and each character had already made roads in dealing with their initial circumstances and making the best out of a bad situation. Randy was an innovator and tried to be on the straight and narrow so his adopted mother wouldn't get rid of him. Dukie was quiet and observant because he had to be on his toes at all times for whatever random event his parents would cause. Namond was loud and bratty and overconfident because he doubted himself and was pressured into being a man like his father but wasn't that at all. Mike was the man of the house and an excellent big brother, but he had trust issues from his mother betraying him letting his abusive father back into the house.

Each kid was faced with a situation that was too much for the kids themselves to fix on their own. Randy with both his conscience and a sociopath cutting all loose ends. Dukie with mechanical and overburdened school decisions which treated the kids as numbers and test scores instead of humans with wants and needs. Mike with others seeing special in him and wanting different things for him, and a bad home situation turned worse. Namond with... with... getting piss on hisself? Namond was vocal and outspoken and was given notice more than others because he was a problem child and the others 'would be fine'. They were already dealing with and making the best out of their home life and were doing well enough, but circumstances forced change. There could have been different outcomes to all.

With help.

Due to not being family or their job or just not paying enough attention and really REALLY putting themselves over for these kids, the mentors didn't go out of their way to really support their wards.

Randy was failed by Carter. Carter made the mistake of not looking out for him and misplaced trust. He trusted Herc, his best friend and partner for years, to take care of this kid and not be an idiot with witness testimony and Herc pretty much got Randy fucked. Carter didn't help Randy himself, and even though he did absolutely care for the kid, he didn't go as far as to check on him, watch out for him, or get there in time to save him. With a bit more care and attention, and a lot less fucking Herc shooting his mouth off, (and also Randy's own guilty conscience and fear of losing Miss Anna by being in trouble), Randy could've survived without being called a snitch and losing everything.

Cutty failed Mike by backing off and by reminded Mike of his father. Chris, if he himself weren't down the wrong road, is the perfect mentor for Mike to relate to, but with the wrong moral track. If Cutty learned the whys of Michael earlier, why he didn't like to be touched and why he didn't trust Cutty taking an interest (pedophilia), Cutty could've stepped in and been there where Chris was for Michael first.

Namond succeeded because Colvin went the extra mile to push for this kid, to take him under his wing, talk to his parents, and figure out Namond himself. He wasn't projecting onto Namond; he was listening, showing new things to Namond, and helping him understand his own perspective and goals.

And 160 characters left... Roland obviously didn't push harder for Dukie to remain where he was knowing how bad things would get. The system around Prezbo sucked himin

Go back and watch the sitown interview between Lesnar, Reigns, and Heyman on the Snowstorm RAW and tell me that Heyman aces hyping up Reigns, his family, and his path to the main event against his beast. I'd love to see more interactions with just the two of them, even if they aren't aligned.
