An acquaintance runs a VR arcade, but it seems like they only run HTC Vive. As a result, the game library is a little more limited, though maybe they'll pick up RE7 when exclusivity ends. It'd be cool to see where the place goes if VR really takes off. There's a couple such arcades in the area so I'm hoping it increases interest in the medium.

As an aside, are there any Android VNs you guys recommend? I'm going to Hong Kong in a couple days and it'd be nice to have something on my phone >_>

A VR arcade seems like a potentially really good idea. Normal arcades are pretty much done, at least where I'm at, but I can imagine VR getting people back in them again.

Is it set up kind of more like a traditional arcade or more like an internet cafe? Come to think of it I haven't seen internet cafes anywhere lately either (the ones I'm thinking of are the kind that have a bunch of gaming PCs set up and you have to log in to your account.) Last time I remember going to one of those was like a decade ago or more. Another thing that VR could potentially revive. I would probably go to one just to try it for once.

I did a quick search to see what's on Android and some stuff popped up but I'm not sure what's Japan only. Looking into the store there seems to be a bunch of the phone app equivalent of shovelware ('Dress up your anime girl', etc) Usually I just browse the Internet on my phone or play a trivia game against random people, never really thought to use it for VNs. Doesn't look like there are too many options either way but maybe I just suck at finding stuff.

With Android phones you can play:

Kirikiri VNs (.xp3 - Abyss, Comyu etc)
Onscripter VNs (.nsa - Higurashi, Umineko, Killer Queen etc)
PC98, PSP, PSX, Sega Saturn VNs

I did see Phantom. It was a while back probably like 6 or 7 years ago. I remember liking it back then.

I remember you mentioning Gun Katana before, didn't it not have a guide? Hopefully it's not like MinDead Blood where it seems very difficult to impossible to see everything without one. I remember trying a few times without the guide and usually got the same bad ending and then one decentish one. It also took me like three playthrough attempts to discover that sending the twins by themselves to the locations unlocks scenes/storylines with them.

There's no real guide yea. Like there's one that vaguely tells you the events that you need to see but it's basically identical to MinDead Blood where you have to choose where you go each day. If I can be bothered after finishing it I might write a day by day guide for it.

You could try checking out Honoguraki Toki no Hate Yori. Like it's not the best VN but if you want more of that atmosphere then it has it. You should really go and finish Kureha's route.

I think I will read Honoguraki Toki actually. I think next I might do this one called Vampirdzhija Vjedogonia that I found a while back. It's by Urobuchi and looks like it has the same team as Saya and Kikokugai. I've read/watched a bunch of stuff by him and really liked most of it so it's probably at least ok. I never saw Blassreiter though which I hear is not good.

I'll try to finish the route, last I played it the dating stuff was ending and the bullied guy in their class looked like he was getting possessed so maybe something will happen soon.

I really like the regular version of that song in GSS, the soundtrack was pretty good. Too bad that guy on YouTube didn't upload all of it though. I also like how someone uploaded that part where Gore runs over the old lady, I think her name was Momoe or something, can't quite remember, Yuka's sister which was like one of the best scenes in the game.

I've heard about that, I think it has some kind of strange mini games in it though? Have you seen Phantom? I heard the VN for it is decent.

The route isn't too long luckily so you can probably finish it pretty fast.

Yea, the original version is probably my favorite track in the game. I'm not sure why someone uploaded that either but that scene was great. I actually just started playing another VN by the GSS team today called Gun Katana. It's kind of strange since it has like FPS elements but the story seems pretty good so far.

Either way I'll probably still check it out. One of the things Sakura no Mori Dreamers did right I think was atmosphere. The whole thing felt kind of creepy and dreary even during the more light hearted parts (at least during the common route). I think the soundtrack really helped that. If it has more of that kind of feel I'll definitely read 2.

As for actual horror in 1 aside from overall atmosphere the only really unsettling part was the stuff with the chef. The later storylines with the school shooter-esque crazy guy and the crazy girl were ok but not nearly as creepy. Also I never really bought Hide as a villain. He was portrayed as this fun loving goofy homeless guy the whole game then all of a sudden he's 100% psycho with tentacles and Resident Evil mutations but it was still hard to see him as that threatening or villain-like. Just felt sudden. There may have been hints I just didn't catch I suppose.

Yea, the atmosphere was done pretty well. I kind of feel like nothing will ever top Gore Screaming Show though. It's a real shame that the guys behind it don't really write those kind of stories anymore. This remix is so badass:

I think they might retcon or change things up quite a bit because I was looking at the stuff for SnmD 2 and it looks like Madoka is alive, which maybe means alternate story with the same cast or something. Or maybe she just comes back again as a ghost despite the big deal about her "passing on" to the afterlife toward the end of 1.

She was probably really popular or people got mad she didn't have any H-scenes, I can't imagine another reason why they'd do it like this.

That sounds kind of lame, I guess it could just be a sequel to the common route with her as the main girl though. I remember really disliking the way she was drawn, like her right ear just looks so strange.

No I actually didn't, I probably won't at this point because it's hard to go back to something when it's been a while. I might still read the new one though when it comes out. I did the whole common route which is I think is probably the vast bulk of the story. Unless something really important happens in the routes.

I mean the structure seemed to be common route, then after that the routes started which almost kind of seemed like bonus stuff.

I'm not sure how they'll set up the sequel (maybe a mix of the routes or just a retcon) but it's probably a good idea to at least read Kureha's route since her ending is basically an extension of the common route and feels like the true end. In the other routes nothing really happens so you can skip them if you want.

Has anyone else read Honoguraki Toki no Hate Yori? It's by the guy who wrote Princess Evangile and Sakura no Mori Dreamers.

It's probably one of the strangest things I've ever read, and not in a good way. The author didn't really learn anything from Sakura and still tries to jam in out of place date scenes and lines that no sane person would say. The prologue is really good but the rest of the game doesn't really live up to it. Hopefully someday he can write a horror visual novel without trying to make it slice of life at the same time.

Could I get some quick summaries?

I'm terrible at writing summaries but:

Cartagra - A detective returns to his home town after being hired to find out where his ex-girlfriend disappeared to and ends up getting involved in a serial murder case. It kind of drags on at some points but is worth it in the end. Make sure that you use a walkthrough though since there are a lot of bad endings.

Kikokugai - A person's younger sister is kidnapped and her mind is put into several mechanical dolls so he goes on a killing spree trying to save her. The story isn't that great (it reminded me of 80s/90s anime), but the fighting scenes make up for it.

Killer Queen - A guy is knocked out and wakes up in a cell. Shortly after, he finds out that he's been put into a battle royale-esque game where to survive he has to kill the other competitors. The set-up makes it sound kind of generic but it's done a lot better than most similar stories (Doubt, Judge etc).

Swan Song - A huge snowstorm sweeps across Japan and destroys civilization. The people who were able to survive the beginning of the storm then band together and try and rebuild what was lost. The story is kind of like what Lord of the Flies would be if it were R18.

So an audit itself is just an examination to make sure everything checks out, and the auditor is the one who carries it out.

Is there some sort of official process done with this, or is it carried out like a health inspection at a restaurant? Like, some guy shows up at random and just looks everything up and down.

Auditors mainly just confirm the big things on a company's financial statements (inventory, sales etc) since it would be inefficient to go through every single item and since a lot of the balances are immaterial. Even for inventory, they don't check every single item and instead just use sampling methods to confirm the balance is right.

One misconception is that an auditor is there to find fraud, which they aren't. Instead they're just confirming that what's being shown to the shareholders is a true and fair view of the company's position, from a material perspective.

Yeah, looks to be that way. I wonder why they wouldn't put the furigana on some of the names. Maybe because it's a super common name that's overwhelmingly read one way that a native speaker would immediately know?

I figured out what CG I was missing It was the the closeup one of Lapis showing the strings on her fingers. Despite the game showing it to me multiple times it's not in the gallery

So I guess it was some sort of glitch.

Maybe yea, sometimes even with strange names they don't give furigana though. Like with one of Black Cyc's games I had no idea how to pronounce a lot of the place names until the sequel where everyone was voiced.

There are no other choices so it probably is a glitch yea.

I think Shidou said that the second head turned it into being more criminal focused, I'm sure Ryouko did play a part in that too.

Human experimentation does definitely seem to be another goal of theirs as in one of the endings Akira is hitting their testing facilities one by one (of which they seem to have quite a few.)

I just thought it was Amata because those two kanji together actually form the word "Amata" (means many) but yours could be right too I think. Yours seems more like a name though, it seems like it could also be "Yuuta". Some of them in the family seem to have weird names like possibly "Katana" though so who knows.

What probably made me think it was Amata even more was because in one of the Miku games on PS4 there's a song called "Dance of Many" and it's written with that exact word pronounced "Amata".

I should work on my individual kanji knowledge so that doesn't become a problem. I went straight to learning the vocab words and only studying a kanji individually if it was a word by itself. Generally it works out pretty well. I mean most games have furigana on names or are voiced so it usually isn't a huge problem.

I don't think there's any point trying to learn nanori readings. Like one name can have 10+ readings so unless you have the furigana then it's often impossible to tell.

I'm glad you enjoyed it, it really is a shame that nobody's really heard of it.

Yea, the whole build up to that where Akira realised that his father was never trying to kill him was cool too.

I think that Ryouko joining probably played a big part in things changing too. Like she's probably the reason that the group shifted from what it originally was into a human experimentation focused crime organisation.

He earned the title when he was a kid since every time he passed out his other self killed his target I think.

Ah wow, I never looked up the proper reading so I was just calling him Kazuo (kazu + oo) the whole time. I would have liked there to have been more of a conclusion between him and Kasuka. The way it ended with that friend showing up and helping didn't make much sense.

The prologue game was my favorite part too, like it wasn't really necessary storywise for them to write it like that at all but it made the game so much better.

Np, I just really wanted to let more people know about the game.

Ah, I think there might be a glitch with the game? I remember there being a part where instead of a CG there was like an error message in the top left.

Were you glad that you were wrong about the card being used on Lapis? Luckily most fighting VNs use the same words so once you've played one you can read pretty much any of them.

The "dying vicariously" thing was my first thought but the VN treated it like some sort of shocking revelation (when it really wasn't, it was just sort of weird) so I was just wondering.

Regarding the card I was kind of glad. I almost expected them to try to use it on the mysterious 5th day Abyss guy but since he's apparently super strong it wouldn't make much sense story wise for him to be on their side for most/all of his time in the story.

What I half expected to happen during the part when Nonko used the card was for her to not actually have declared it/used it (since Ryouko apparently didn't hear her invoke it or notice whatever happens when it's activated at first) but for Ryouko to believe she did, and do everything she said anyway. The radar seemingly stopped working when she was pulled to their side though so that probably would've given it away.

Also I think I would've figured out that archery girl (Rasis? Racis? Not sure what it's trying to spell) was Ryuuichi's sister (well, if not his sister then as the girl they introduced earlier in the story) if her hair didn't seemingly turn from bright orange to brownish when she puts the mask on, lol. Though there are probably other hints that I missed.

Yeah that's good to know for the fighting vocab. A few others I've read have had fight scenes (Mindead Blood but those seemed a lot simpler and didn't really slow me down at all). but some of the ones in Abyss get pretty involved

Yea, it was already obvious that she was insane so it wasn't really that shocking.

I didn't really understand the radar, like I can't quite remember why since it's been a while but I felt like there was some kind of plot hole at the time.

I guess you can kind of tell that there must have been some reason he wanted to chase down Abyss so badly. I really hated trying to decipher his kansai at some points though.

Yea, if you ever play a military VN then you'll pick up the remaining ones you don't have from Abyss.

I don't think I quite get why Ryouko gave the sacrifices her name. Was it to live (die?) vicariously through their deaths or something? Or was it to let them know her name so if they escape they can come after her? Those are the only two things that I can think of that line up with what she was saying right before.

Just got to where Ryouko dies. The 2nd game is delivering so far I'd say. The battles (some of them, not all) get pretty wordy and long though and those are like the only spots where I feel I have to look up words a bit

I think it's more just there for world building. It doesn't really matter if you've read it or not since they eventually explain all the parts relevant to the story in much easier language. The fact that something like that actually exists is crazy though since the game was created in under a year.

I don't really get the point of making something that's completely impenetrable without a walkthrough (and apparently even confusing with one). Do they expect people to really play it a million times or trial and error their way through it?

Also Abyss I didn't read it very much last couple of days but I got to where Nami got the rules explained to her.

That betrayal thing where they can make an Abyss member come to their side seems like it could be really interesting. But I'm guessing they're just going to use it on Lapis who helps out the main characters a lot anyway. It'll be way more interesting if they use it on some super evil Abyss member.

Also one thing I'm confused on, there are apparently other targets in the second game (Akira being one, Nonko seemed to have an idea she'd be one). Do they not get the same rules presentation/letter and such as Nami since she's the main player I guess? Or get it separately? Hard to tell because I haven't got his POV in a while. And Abyss is just after them anyway? It seems Nonko joined up partially because she guessed she'd be one of these but she got the rules presentation along with Nami but not sure if its because shes one of the targets or just because she agreed to be one of Nami's companions

Now that I think about it though it makes sense in the context of "There are also extra targets, so help me because you might be one of these." as a mechanism to help the main target recruit people to go through the game with them. Otherwise I imagine it'd be hard-impossible to get people to agree to that.

I'm at the part where they met back up with kasuka but nothing has really happened yet

The bonus cards are cool yea, without them the writing would have been pretty limited when it came to twists etc.

I think you're right about it being more that the people have to guess whether or not they could be a target. So in the end it is just a mechanic to help Nami recruit people.

There's kind of a lot of building up before the game but it's worth it once it starts.

If you look at stuff from before around 2002 ish you're bound to find all sorts of wacky stuff that makes you wonder "Did the people making this have any idea what they were doing?" and the answer is that no, they didn't really

their inspiration back in those days was definitely from the super cryptic and nearly impossible text-based adventures of the era

I get the feeling that it was intentionally made to be difficult to finish considering that the game came with a 26 page fake dissertation on the ways in which time travel could be possible without resulting in paradoxes:

Even if the gameplay is terrible, the story is easily one of the best time travel ones out there and probably played a big part in creating the genre. If you've played / seen later Japanese time travel games / animes etc then it's easy to see the parts where they were influenced by Yu-No.

Awkward as in writing or content or interface? The Wikipedia page lists it as having some stuff that sounds like it could be rather complicated, and then there's:
The game also includes references to cannibalism and incest.

The gameplay is kind of like an old point and click game except significantly worse. It's literally impossible to finish without a walkthrough.

yu-no is without a doubt the biggest thing I haven't read yet. I tried playing the original a few years back and I'm sure there's some good stuff somewhere in there but it's one of the most awkward games I've ever played and I only managed to get through like an hour of it... even with a guide.

Depending on what they changed in the remake I'd consider getting it but I want to wait a while and hear more. I'm not in a rush anyway

It's definitely a mess yea, when my friend played through it he accidentally lost an item and had to spend 2 hours or so getting it back. The payoff is definitely worth it in the end though. I've heard that the remake changes most of that but I'm still not through the prologue yet.

Is it Japan only?

For now, their popular stuff seems to get translated though.

Is anyone else going to buy the Yuno remake? I bought it and it came with a free code for a Vita version of the original game too.

Yea, it's definitely worth reading through all the endings (there's a choice eventually that you should save at). The choice for Kasuka was so pathetic though, like the handshake option physically hurt to choose.

The second game idea is cool yea, it kind of feels like the author drew on battle royale, killer queen etc and then made a kind of hybrid game.

That part was pretty sad, by the end Onizuka was probably one of my favorite characters.

You have to remember that Ryouko is the one who said that though, like she's just completely insane.

Onizuka was one of my favorites as well.

It looks like Magase (I really hope I'm remembering the name right. Been a while since they showed me furigana for it. The short student council guy (or "guy") is Lapis/Sealed Fate. Well they didn't confirm it but they all but tell you it seems (in the Onizuka flashback).

Now that I think back there was that time that Akira noted that "he" and Sealed Fate looked really similar to one another. But I honestly thought nothing of that at the time. There was also that part with him taking out the thugs in front of the school rather easily.

You said earlier that the game gives you enough info to figure stuff out and that rings pretty true. Another thing it did that I liked was how it kind of makes you think that the girl from the prologue was the girl Akira saw Onizuka knock out before they fought, but later info hints at and then reveals (it seems) that the prologue took place in the further past. I think I'm remembering that scene correctly (Onizuka knocking out the girl) as it has actually been a while since I read that part.

Ryouko definitely isn't a reliable source of info, right. Could also be lying about Abyss killing Akira's family/clan.

Also I looked up Killer Queen and that looks interesting. It looks like it has remakes and prequels though.

That was kind of a strange twist, it eventually came down to who else could it be though.

The writing they used to make it seem like it was that night where Akira was there is probably some of the best I've seen. The way they give you hints about the fact that the victims' names might be different when Akira goes down into the basement is really well done too.

I've still only played the first one but it's another pretty underrated VN. The best order is to go original - remake - prequel apparently.
