A lot of the games have good compositions but the way the hardware makes the music sound is a real turn off Comparing the SNES hardware with the Genesis hardware is difficult. They're so drastically different in terms of how they work that you can't actually make any meaningful parallels between them. The Genesis synthesizes sounds from scratch. The composer needs to choose specific types of sound waves, frequencies, etc, and layers them to create music. The SNES uses soundfonts made up of recorded samples (typically compressed due to cartridge space) which are played back either directly (for sound effects) or modified by altering the pitch, volume and speed of the sample. This means that if you have good samples, it sounds great, but if you have shitty samples, it sounds shitty. The Genesis will always sound like a Genesis.
