But you'll probably end up having to pay it regardless. Some collection agencies will take part in "credit bartering" or "pay for delete," meaning removing the trade line in exchange for payment, but they're not supposed to. My company does not. However, if the debt has been sold by the original creditor, chances are good you could settle this account for significantly less, like 50% maybe. It's not the best for your credit, because the trade line will stay on your credit report and say something like "settled for less than the full balance" which looks bad.
