TopicDo you usually speed when driving?
Hicks233

Not deliberately. When getting enough speed up for a hill I can go a few MPH over on the other side that hadn't been bled off during the climb. I take corners faster than I should and go over cattle grids faster than I ought to, but overall I'm reasonably well behaved.

I was taught that it's a speed limit and not a target.

I get increasingly pissed off at people that are constantly pushing at the limit and wildly overtaking only to have to sharply brake again because they've reached another vehicle infront that isn't rushing and now they're going "OH FUCK!! BRAKE! BRAKE!!" as they wildly try to fit into a small gap.

The worst are the fucking idiots that can't understand separation distance on wet roads. If I were in a really strong vehicle, safe from harm or replacement wasn't an issue I'd be tempted to brake really hard and have those idiots smash the front of their vehicles on my back, the idiots still wouldn't learn though.

Should we oblige a muslim caterer to provide service to a Beer & Bacon Fest?

Since this protects religion, take this scenario and tell me where you sit:

If a Christian extremist doctor is the only one that performs a rare, life-saving surgery in the state, what should happen if a gay man were to visit him because he needs this surgery and is turned away?

Because as far out as this sounds, it is protected by the Trump Administration and surely is protected by Mississippi and Alabama law.

Would performing surgery on them be endorsing their lifestyle? - Doubtful. They'd have issues relating to medical codes of practise and oaths taken in the process of becoming a doctor as well.
Would providing a service (baking a wedding cake and by extension supporting gay marriage) that is related to a specific part of their identity and lifestyle be endorsing it? - Probably.

Depends on whether you are talking about a social (traditional conservative) or an economic conservative.

For a social conservative their views are likely to be focused around a religious faith, community structure and the prevalence of a traditional family unit. In those cases any variation in sexuality or identity is going to run counter to that. They are likely to have a strictly defined cultural ingroup and gays are going to be outside of that group.

For an economic conservative - their focus is going to be on money. They may regard the social aspects as important, but their priority is going to be in regards to money and the systems related to it; taxation, welfare, preferential treatment. They're less likely to care about sexuality - unless it affects what they have to pay or what they receive.

This seems like a libertarian vs authoritarian thing, not a conservative vs liberal thing.

"Conservative" means different things to different groups, nations and at different times. Now it's taken to mean pro-business, anti-tax - before it was about social tradition.

The left bashes authoritarianism - unless they're the ones in charge.

Out of curiosity, where would their political stances fall on the spectrum?

Depends which members you're talking about?

The "Alt-right" is made up of a messy coalition of convenience or a clumsy attempt to categorise right of centre attitudes and ideology for easier promotion, consumption and/or criticism.

There will be people that identify as National Socialists (1930's style) there'll be people that base everything around the racial elements of the Nazis, without adhering to the economics and without the underlying German nationalism - they are LARPing as Nazis (playing dress up and appropriating the symbology - Neo-Nazis) and simply reluctant to say "We don't like or want people that aren't (insert race here) and we really, reallllly like the Hugo Boss 1930 collection".

Among that group you'll also have ethno-nationalists and genuine fascists - though it'd be "American Facism" and not German or Italian as it's not Germany or Italy.

You'll have libertarians, neo-cons, traditionalists, fundamentalists etc. all crammed in there as well - why approach each ideology separately when you can lump them all together? They're not left of centre, they're "the enemy" so why give them the benefit of the doubt?

I don't think there *is* a unifying political viewpoint for the Alt-right as a whole - same with the Left or the "Alt-left". Some on the left want an authoritarian, planned economy, some want idealistic Marxism, some want democratic socialism. Some are also going to want (insert race here) gone. Different viewpoints and goals, all given one clumsy label.

I think the closest you'll get to an understanding is that if you lump Neo-Nazis and Ethno-nationalists together and call that Alt-right - groups that are itching for a fight and lump Antifa and '70's style leftist radicals or historical Marxist Radicals as Alt-left - also itching for a fight then you'll have a better comparison. "Alt" Left/Right - they're outside of the mainstream of political discourse, they're violent activists and fucking things up for everyone, they believe in different things but their method of getting what they want is through violence.

if a nation is friendly towards multiple ethnicities and religions - maybe Jews won't get targeted in it

that's essentially false btw. Anyone who has been paying attention to race relations in the US knows its about teams, and not about equality.

Some people are essentially not racist at all, some people are specifically only racist towards Indians, or to blacks or to Japan or whatever. But its a foolish as hell belief.

That's why it's presented as "if". There isn't a nation where *all* ethnicities/religions/ideologies are going to be welcome - or at least it is spectacularly unlikely. Humans are tribal by nature, that nature has allowed them to survive as well as to destroy. It's idealism to hope otherwise, but (as you've said about teams) - if you can try and encourage and/or force a shift in attitude then you can improve things for your own ingroup (whichever it may be).

Like I finished with, it's all a big mess.

The argument usually goes; that they largely maintain their ethnic homogeneity, they have high levels of academic achievement, they have a strong in group preference and are perceived as "traditionalists".

Jews have all of that too and yet white nationalists hate them.

I think it all comes down to ingroup preference. European nations tend to have a couple of shared characteristics through history that have defined them:

Exploration
Fighting each other
Fighting everyone else
Kicking out Jews every few hundred years

A lot of those conflicts were funded through the use of Jewish money lenders. If the church is teaching that usury is against its teachings then when you need the money to start another fight, you go where you can get the money, while still remaining - or at least appearing to remain within the churches' good graces. Now if you don't want to then pay that money back... you kick out the Jews again.

When Jews were prevented from taking certain jobs it forced them down certain avenues - one of these was finance. Given that they also stuck to their faith it presented a clear in/outgroup difference. I think where the difference between a sympathy or even positive view for East Asians and a vitriolic hatred for Jews comes through is the continued cycle of expulsion and immigration - the Jews now have their own state. Before that they would have go to another nation, the cycle would repeat and they'd get kicked out of the nation. Whether you go along with arguments of: (for example) failure to integrate, victimisation and lack of opportunity to integrate, or an inherent incompatibility with these nations The presence of East Asians in Europe would be nowhere near as prominent as that of Jews - it's harder to have an inherent distrust or hatred of a group you haven't had live around you, an historic tradition of suspicion of that and other outgroups. Those tendencies made them effective colonising and conquering nations.

When you look at a nation like the US though it becomes messy. The US is a nation that was founded by colonising an already inhabited landmass. The original inhabitants were killed off, nearly totally and a new group took their place. That group was of European descent. Then Blacks were brought over, then East Asians - and among this - yes, Jews. In many ways it was a deliberate and artificial process. The US Constitution tried to "level" the playing field - with caveats that are amended as time goes on. The US is a bold experiment that could go either way. The US is a mixed and artificially constructed nation in ways that European nations aren't - or at least to a lesser extent and a good reason to not view issues of immigration and social cohesion in other nations through a US lens.

The Jews aren't a stupid bunch either. They know that there is a great deal of suspicion and hate regarding them. There tends to however be a significant presence of Jews in groups that advocate or call for multicultural or multi-ethnic societies; it'd be fair to go along the lines of - if a nation is friendly towards multiple ethnicities and religions - maybe Jews won't get targeted in it? A "white nationalist" - if we're going on the basis of this meaning someone that wants an ethnostate and either the expulsion or segregation of any other outgroup members is going to see that, see the efforts that are counter to *their* goals and regard them as a major threat. I think there is envy as well over the status of Israel. They get away with a lot of shit as criticism of Israel tends to be categorised as Anti-Semitism, though this goes into pro/anti-Zionism.

It's all a big fucking mess essentially. All comes down to ingroup preference and how you define your ingroup and how much wiggle room and space there is for an outgroup (if any).
