You'll always get a better deal buying individual cards, but if you don't know anything about the game, you wouldn't know what to get. So if you're going to get booster packs, then get a fat pack which is like 40 bucks and has 10 packs in it, but you get a cool box and stuff to go with it. Just pick whichever set you think has setting she would like. Recently there has been an a sorta evil egypt set called amonkhet, a magical middle eastern steampunk set called Kaladesh, and a old school horror set(think zombies, werewolves, ghosts, vampires.) called Shadows over Innistrad.
