FLINT, Mich. — Thousands of people in Flint are at risk of losing their homes to foreclosure if they don't pay up on their water bills. After recently putting out shut-off notices the city is now back to threatening tax liens on people's homes.
"I got scared, for probably the first time since this all started this actually scared me," said Melissa Mays, who is a mother and water activist who lives in Flint.
Mays received the notice in the mail Friday stating that she must pay nearly $900 by May 19 to avoid a lien being placed on her property.

The Mays Family is not alone. More than 8,000 people are also on the same notice. What gets them on this list is not paying a water bill for six months or more.
After May 19, for those who do not pay, a lengthy process begins which could end in foreclosure.
Mays now plans to go against what she believes and pay up so she can keep her family's home.
"While I understand this is the way the law reads we are in a totally different situation," said Mays.
City leaders say they are in a bind and they need the cash.
"We have to have revenue coming in, so we can't give people revenue, I mean excuse me, give people water at the tap and not get revenue coming in to pay those bills," said Al Mooney, City of Flint Treasury Department.

Mooney says the shut offs are already working in the city's favor. Last month Flint brought in nearly $3 million for water. That is nearly $1 million more from the month prior when they only collected $2.1 million.
Mooney hopes the 8,000 tax lien notices that went out with prompt even more people to pay their water bills. If all of those were paid up that would bring in nearly $6 million for the city.
Congressman Dan Kildee issued a statement Wednesday after reports that some Flint residents recently received notices of potential tax liens being placed on their properties for unpaid water bills during the water crisis:
“Flint families should not have to pay for water that they still cannot drink, and they certainly should not lose their homes over this ongoing water crisis that was caused by the callous decisions of state government. It is unfortunate that Governor Snyder ended water credits for Flint families. I opposed this decision because Flint families deserve support from the state until there is confidence in the water system again.”

A misfired conversation led to a white local news anchor’s resignation after she facetiously used the N-word in reference to herself as she tried to contact an African American man about a story she was working on.

Valerie Hoff, who worked as a reporter for WXIA-TV, told Atlanta Journal-Constitution that she was trying to track down a video showing a white police officer punching a black motorist during a traffic stop last month. Hoff noticed that a black man calling himself Curtis Rivers posted the confrontation on Twitter, so Hoff sent him a direct message asking if she could make a copy.

Rivers reportedly used the N-word a lot in his Twitter activity, and tweeted that a lot of “news *****s” were asking for permission to use the video. Hoff referred to herself as a “news ***** in her DM. Even though Rivers seemed amused at first, he noticed that Hoff was white, and the situation then took a turn for the worse.

Despite Hoff’s attempts to clarify what she meant, Rivers posted pictures of the private messages on Twitter, which started gaining online attention. Hoff was initially put on suspension, but she eventually tended to her resignation.

“I was quoting something the gentleman said in a public tweet back to him in a private message but that doesn’t make it any less offensive. It was incredibly stupid and reckless,” Hoff said. “I repeatedly apologized and continue to do so. I also offered to resign immediately.”

Rivers reacted to the dustup by telling AJC “I just think it wasn’t right for her to use that word in regards to a person who is African American on herself or use the word period for that matter. If she is bold enough to say it to me being an African American then I’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time she has used that word.”

Hoff has talked about the incident on Twitter, insisting that her intentions were good, even if her word choice was bad

A 15-year-old boy was shot and killed by police in a Dallas suburb was shot in the head by a rifle, Dallas County Medical Examiner’s office said.

The medical examiner’s office said Monday that Jordan Edwards’s death was ruled a homicide. The teen, who has been identified by family members, was killed Saturday night on a residential street in Balch Springs.

But by Sunday, there two different versions of what prompted the fatal shooting.

Balch Springs police chief Jonathan Haber told reporters at a news conference Sunday afternoon that officers were dispatched to the 12300 block of Baron Drive in Balch Springs after receiving a 911 call at 11 p.m. reporting several drunken teens walking around the neighborhood.

Once officers arrived, they heard gunshots, Haber said. In what police described as an “unknown altercation,” a vehicle then began “backing down the street toward the officers in an aggressive manner.” One officer shot at the vehicle, Haber said, striking the front seat passenger.

“Another family ripped apart by police brutality,” he wrote on Twitter on Sunday. “There was absolutely no justification for this murder. We demand justice!”

In a phone interview with The Washington Post on Sunday night, Merritt said Jordan, his 16-year-old brother and three other teen boys were at a party on Baron Drive when they learned that police were on the way.

They went to the car parked outside and saw flashlights and heard gunshots, Merritt said. As they climbed into the car, the teens apparently heard somebody yell profanities. Then they were being fired upon.

They fled for about a block, Merritt said, before they noticed there was smoke coming from Jordan’s head. The driver of the car, the boy’s older brother, stopped the car and they flagged down an approaching police cruiser for help.

Several of the teens played on the football team together. Jordan was going through spring training for next year’s season.

“They’re never going to be the same,” Merritt said. “These kids are never going to be the same.”

Merritt claimed three bullets were fired into the car. They came through the driver’s side window, he said.

Jordan and the four teens with him had not been drinking, according to Merritt. They were not cited for underage drinking and have not been charged with any crimes, he said.

To me bringing up it is selling out means nothing. If it is selling over what the Wii U sold by the end of the year, then you'll have an argument that this was a good idea.
