Tamatoa is a legendary monster that fought Maui back in the primordial days and survived to the film's present time. This all happens in the Pacific. It's inspired by Polynesian mythology. The Little Mermaid is a Danish fairy tale. Disney took liberties with it but their version is still vaguely set in the 19th century in the Atlantic near Europe. So this theory proposes that Ursula died, and was reincarnated as a monster male hermit crab in the primordial mythological Pacific, hundreds if not thousands of years before Moana was born. Which means that The Little Mermaid's Europe was even further back in the past, which means the movie Moana is actually set thousands/millions of years in the future. It's nonsense. Their personalities are nothing alike. Tamatoa is a hoarder like a dragon sitting on a treasure mound. Ursula doesn't "collect" stuff in that fasion at all. It also adds nothing to either story. It means nothing. It's just someone trying to string together Disney movies into a larger conspiracy about a connected universe. The fact that Tamatoa references Sebastian as a jokey easter egg shows how disconnected the movies truly are. The stakes are so low that the directors are happy to break the fourth wall for a laugh. Tamatoa also has the Genie's lamp from Aladdin on his back. That's another easter egg. Maybe he's the reincarnated Cave of Wonders, since it was purple and it also hoarded treasure! I wonder where that puts ancient Persia on this ridiculous timeline. And did you know that Maui transforms into Sven the reindeer from Frozen? Maybe he's a reincarnated Norwegian spirit. --- The owls are not what they seem. |

You can trace how Tolkien is seguing from that kind of folklore style into the more epic mode that comes later. For some reason, whenever I hit Helm's Deep, that's when I start to fade. Only Saruman's death really adds anything, but the way that scene is inserted is awkward, and it's pretty cheesy. --- The owls are not what they seem. |

The idea is just that it's not a bow-tied happy ending. You go home, and your home is in ruins. You have to clean up the mess, try to heal, but the trauma's still there. In the movies though, you do get a bow-tied happy ending. About five of them! ...actually, knowing Jackson, he probably would've tried to turn it into a big action scene if he included it. You've defeated the evil fantasy overlord, and you expect to go home to your quaint little Shire and rest on your laurels... but you can't, because your quaint little Shire was also destroyed in the conflict. And it didn't take an evil fantasy overlord to do it. Just a scummy wizard. Basically, defeating Sauron wasn't the auto-win button you thought it was. Life is more complicated. In the movies, the Shire always remains this untouched paradise. So you lose that message, which is arguably the main message in the book. However, I get why they cut it. The way the movies are structured, it would've been a giant hiccup in the pacing. At the very end too, when audiences think everything's over! If they wanted to feature it, they would've had to rearrange the plot to set up an expectation for something like that. The approach they took worked well. I have no complaints about them leaving it out. --- The owls are not what they seem. |

I know he supposedly improves but I find it hard to forgive somebody who'd do that to a kid. I think a lot of people feel the same about many of these characters. If the characters are nasty, people don't like them. I don't personally care whether they're bad or can be forgiven.
