From Wikipedia:

The modern sandwich is named after Lord Sandwich, but the exact circumstances of its invention and original use are still the subject of debate. A rumour in a contemporaneous travel book called Tour to London by Pierre-Jean Grosley formed the popular myth that bread and meat sustained Lord Sandwich at the gambling table. But Sandwich was into many bad habits, including the Hellfire club, and any story may be a creation after the fact. [21] Lord Sandwich was a very conversant gambler, the story goes, and he did not take the time to have a meal during his long hours playing at the card table. Consequently, he would ask his servants to bring him slices of meat between two slices of bread, a habit well known among his gambling friends. Other people, according to this account, began to order "the same as Sandwich!", and thus the "sandwich" was born.[22] The sober alternative to this account is provided by Sandwich's biographer N. A. M. Rodger, who suggests that Sandwich's commitments to the navy, to politics, and to the arts mean that the first sandwich was more likely to have been consumed at his work desk.

The original sandwich was a piece of salt beef between two slices of toasted bread.

Enough.

Right you are, Metalsonic66. Sometimes it's fun to play with trolls, until it's time to kick them back under the bridge. That time is now.

The definition of a true "sandwich" does NOT include a "solid slice of cheese!" Do you put your solid cheese slice in with peanut butter and jelly? Would you deny PB&J is a sandwich? Or take the famous Philly Cheese Steak. It is made with either shredded Provolone or Cheez Whiz, neither a "solid slice of cheese." I can't think of any sandwich that requires your "solid slice," not even the famous ham & cheese.... I've actually used shredded cheese on them. And about the time the sandwich was invented, cheese was a luxury item, served with wines and meats at a formal table; it was not available in slices. So there.

I had a hearty laugh at today's poll, since I really love hot dogs. And hamburgers. And ham and cheese. And Sloppy Joes..... you get the picture. Here is the definition from Google search:

noun
1.
an item of food consisting of two pieces of bread with meat, cheese, or other filling between them, eaten as a light meal. e.g., "a ham sandwich"

However my real laugh was the wording. A "Hot Dog" is not a sandwich... it is a piece of meat, tubular in shape. Sometimes of questionable origin. Once you put that meat in a bun, and add all your favorite condiments and regional specialties, THEN it's a sandwich.

The Earl of Sandwich thanks you... even though I doubt he ever ate a hot dog.

No, because my parents died before video games existed! However I did take away my son's Nintendo NES in 1986, when he was 14, because he got in trouble with the law. His mother and I were divorced, but she demanded I punish him in some way. Anyhow, I plugged in the thing, and got hooked on Metroid. Had to buy my own NES. It wasn't my first video game (I'd played an Atari 2600 and started on Pong when I was 23 in 1975), but it started a long line of game playing on consoles and PC. At 65, I will stop when you pry that controller from my cold dead hands!

:) I love it... every now and then I get a reminder just how darn old I'm getting. Rusted, creaky, sometimes cranky... but still, I play my video games. I found it interesting that the poll gave age 13 or older as the maximum for playing their first game, but limited it by adding, "I was a teenager before I played my first game." Well, I was certainly older than a teenager! I was 23, living in Southern California. I was married, with a baby boy. At work, a flat top "Pong" table was brought in, and it sure sucked up a lot of quarters. Over the years I was a regular at the arcades until 1986, when as punishment for theft, my wife called me (we were divorced) and had me take my son's Nintendo deck away. Of course I hooked it up at my place, and was so into Metroid that I didn't want to give it back. I eventually bought my own, then various other consoles. I still use my PS-3 and keep a PS-2 hooked up. No PS-4 yet because this old goat is on limited income. Maybe soon. Darn, when did I turn 65?? I will keep on playing until they pull that wireless controller out of my cold, dead hands!
