Killing somebody can absolutely be a means of protecting and serving other innocent bystanders. Deadly physical force is a last resort, but in some scenarios its the only option.

We don't shoot to kill however. That's why the protocol of every major police department is to handcuff the guy after the threat is subdued (because as ridiculous as it seems in some instances the person is still under arrest for whatever actions necessitated the shooting until a medical professional can pronounce him; plus since we're subduing and not executing people like the media would have you believe, their still a potential threat until cuffed) and to provide immediate medical attention.

As best I understand the issue, the problem is that police training and protocol varies significantly from municipality to municipality. Some cities do a really good job, some don't.

I mean, it's definitely true that American Democrats are not always on the side of the worker. Tim Kaine supported "right-to-work" (anti-union) legislation, for example.

That said, in general, immigrant workers are only allowed to be brought in for jobs where there is a shortage of local workers willing to do the work. (That's why I, as a Canadian, am able to work in the US, for example. There's a shortage of computer programmers. In fact, the US still doesn't allow enough computer programmers over the border and Silicon Valley is angry about this).

By contrast, in sought after jobs where there is a surplus of local demand for the jobs (say, car assembly lines in Detroit) will hire damn near 100% American.

Yelling against policies that allow immigrant workers is...usually just flash with not a lot of substance. It's not exclusively a right-wing thing, either. Bernie Sanders did this (as an immigrant worker who leans pretty far left, my political leanings should make me like Sanders, but his stances on immigration were something I don't like about him).

Well, I picked a game a first with no speed runs. Then on instructions of "must be speed runnable" I switched to super metroid.

I actually did hold the #1 speed run record for that game years ago. Modern speed runners completely blow me out of the water, though. If I even remember how to do early platforms right (haven't played in over a decade) I would absolutely expose myself at the first mach ball passage. I was never good at that, I just reset until I got it.

Actually, I'd probably expose myself earlier, cause I think speed runners these days get hit deliberately to get knocked a certain direction, cause it's faster than running, and I never practiced that.

Haven't heard much about Russia for a while either, for instance. Certainly it's not the big story anymore. Which is unreal - three months ago the former director of the FBI was saying, under oath, that Russian tampering is absolutely a thing (whether Trump was involved or not).

I mean, the russia stories are out there:

From today: "Mueler seeks grand jury testimony from PR execs who worked with Manafort"

https://www.wsj.com/articles/special-counsel-examines-possible-role-flynn-played-in-seeking-clinton-emails-from-hackers-1503694304?tesla=y

From yesterday -- A third attempt at a meeting set up a Trump campaign/Russia connection has surfaced:

http://www.newsweek.com/rick-dearborn-trump-russia-email-654587

But I dunno, even from a few months ago I just didn't comment much about the Russia stuff. Either he's going to get arrested or he's not, and there's not a whole lot that the public can influence.

Stuff like the transgender ban--that as members of the public we can do something about. I'm sure there will be protests. The ACLU is already saying that they will sue. We can pressure congresspeople who might be able to pressure Trump. The Russia stuff is kind-of just completely outside of our ability to influence as members of the public.

A simple explanation about why it's called "cultural marxism." (Hint: it's not a neo-nazi conspiracy.)

Well, it's certainly a conspiracy/invented label. I've known people who called themselves marxists; those people literally exist and I've spoken with them. I've never known people who called themselves cultural marxists.

EDIT: As to whether it comes from a Nazi origins...eh, I went through all the cited references for cultural marxism on wikipedia a while back, before the page got merged. A lot of them were just conspiracy rants about Jews. Admittedly, language changes, and it's possible the alt right is using cultural marxism to mean something slightly different than neo-nazis were, but that seems to be the origin of the phrase.

Vlado posted...
Your movement aims to eliminate all cultural differences between people. It seeks a world where everyone is culturally equal. Thus, it's natural to call it "cultural marxism."

Hahahahahahahahhahahaha what? Holy shit. If anything I advocate the exact opposite. I support multiculturalism, which celebrates the fact that there are multiple different cultures in the same country, and celebrates their individuality.

Vlado posted...
Naturally, it fails just like economic marxism failed. Nothing that goes against human nature can ever be successful.

Forcing people to have one culture generally does fail yes, I agree. This is why it's good to embrace multiculturalism. I'm glad we agree Vlado.

Vlado posted...
That said, cultural marxism is merely a tool of globalism. Its failure is not enough to destroy globalism, but it facilitates it because when the false morality you guys preach is exposed as the anti-human agenda that it is, it's that much harder for globalism to contain normal people.

This exposure has been going on since GamerGate, and there's no stopping the tide. Thanks to the internet, it gets bigger every day. And it's already big enough that not even total internet censorship (and google are working on that: look up "perspective") can stop it.

Hmm...not sure what's going on in these paragraphs. Apparently I have an anti-human agenda? (What? That makes no sense; I'm a human). And ok, I looked up perspective:

I mean, yeah, "Cultural Marxism" is a term originating in Nazi Germany as "Cultural Bolshevism", which justified persecution of Jews by claiming that they were secretly spreading culture the Nazis saw as undesirable (according to the propaganda, communism and sexual liberation).

The modern day version is...remarkably similar to its Nazi origins, TBH, basically just a conspiracy theory about Jews spreading culture.

It's not exactly news that there's a handful of Neo-Nazis in Washington right now. It's also true that they're generally getting kicked out of or sidelined from this administration (which is a good thing).

Having experienced applying for jobs a few times (games industry is pretty unstable, so I've had lots of companies close on me)...5 years is a bit of a magic number where you're seen as having much more experience. People were skeptical of me when I had 4.5 years experience, and gave me tons of job offers when I had 6 years experience.

So yes, 3.5 years does fall under my threshold of fairly new.

In terms of looking good on a resume, though, the name Google carries a fair bit of weight, and 3.5 years of unbroken experience at the same employer looks a lot better than, say, multiple 6 month stints at different employers. (6 months is about how long it takes to train a new employee, so that means they really did not get work done). So eh, he should be ok finding another job. But yeah, the under 5 years thing means he won't get that many offers.

like if you break it down i end up being of two minds. no, i don't want him to spend 2-5 years working on a case where google's lawyers continuously drain him and reset the case at every chance they can get. they can do that because they have infinite money, he doesn't. the technical aspects of fighting the case are not things i wish upon him. if he had a source of infinite money then by all means, i'd hope he fights 'em. but he shouldn't have to suffer through the corporate side of the legal system.

Ok but like, a relatively new employee (or at least, I assume he is, being only 23) sent a politically charged email to his entire company, said company being one of the biggest in the world.

Even if it was benign, that's probably a fireable offense.

It's probably a fireable offence, yeah, less so for being "politically charged" whatever that means, and more so for internal code of conduct stuff which you sign when you become an employee.

But sending emails that violate codes of conducts happens in companies I've worked for, and it usually doesn't result in a firing in most cases I've seen. Usually HR or their boss just talks to the person, explains to them how they messed up, etc. Probably many of these could have been used as legal justification for firing, but normally people get a second chance. often too many chances. (This one company I worked for, a guy would open up porn at his desk and masturbate to it, genitals out in the open. He only got fired after the third time it happened.... Obviously could have been fired the first time, with legal justification).

this seems potentially a really dumb idea by google. apart from the drama, making him a martyr and superstar overnight, he might have some legal recourse. california's labor laws are super employee friendly and he's fired over an internal memo that was wrongfully leaked, the VP stated unpopular opinion is okay in their work force, which led to his name being wrongfully leaked, which now leads to him fired.

Eh, every tech company I've worked at in California has had basic codes of conduct. (And in Georgia for that matter). Stuff like don't be racist to your coworkers, don't engage in sexual harassment, that kind of stuff.

I'm sure Google has a code of conduct. And it's a simple enough case to say that an internal memo that implies Google shouldn't hire women or black people is a violation of their code of conduct.

Being real for a moment. This guy is 23, and pretty new to the job. I remember being that age, working a programming job, and sending some stupid stuff I really shouldn't have sent to company-wide emails. Some of which, if it had leaked to the public, honestly might theoretically have gotten me fired. Instead I got a slap on the wrist, got told not to do it again, and continued my career.

The fact that this document became international news is probably why he got fired here (instead of just a slap on the wrist). And from Google's perspective it makes perfect sense. For instance, Google's been trying to recruit me for years, and I'm sure this is true for many other women with decades of programming experience. If they keep that guy around, people like me are going to squint at their recruiting efforts and say "eh, nah, I can work anywhere, why work with that guy?" (And frankly, their recruiters care a lot more about getting people with 13 years of experience than people with 3 years of experience).

That said for the sake of an argument, it's definitely possible to have had a native american ancestor and their genes just migrate naturally out their ancestors over time. Should take more than a few generations but if you think about it, first ancestor is 50% and it halves each generation until it's basically nothing. If we're talking recent though like five generations back then no way, should still be like 3%.

It's still very unlikely due to crossover.

Like...26 chromosomes, but even within one chromosome they will cross in random places:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chromosomal_crossover

There's still a probability element to all of this, granted, but it should be something like...

parent: 50%
grandparent: 25%
great grandparent: 12.5%
gg grandparent: 6.25%
ggg grandparent: 3.125%

Hmm...assuming she was born in 1950...
grandparent 1925
g grandparent 1900
gg grandparent 1875
ggg grandparent 1850
gggg grandparent 1825
ggggg grandparent 1800
gggggg grandparent 1775
ggggggg grandparent 1750
gggggggg grandparent 1725
ggggggggg grandparent 1700
gggggggggg grandparent 1675
ggggggggggg grandparent 1650
gggggggggggg grandparent 1625

(And realistically that's about as far back as you can go, cause that would require like...one of the first settlers from Jamestown Virginia.)

That said, going back that far would actually produce a 0.006% on average DNA relationship. Given that these DNA tests don't seem to get more accurate than 0.1%, and the process of gene swapping is random anyway so it could be LESS than 0.006%...yes, she could be 1/16384 Native American and it wouldn't show up on the test.

--------------

The mitochondrial test, however, doesn't show shit. Mitochondrial DNA is only passed down from your mother, meaning your mother has basically the same Mitochondrial DNA as you, and basically the same Mitochondrial DNA as her mother, and her grandmother, and her great grandmother and so on. If it's showing 99% European, then that just means that one side of her family (her unbroken matriarchal line) was definitely European, no questions asked.

This is pretty great.

Is the third video just the first video, but transposed into a minor key?

Also in general the entire situation is REALLY messy thanks to Manafort and Flynn both registering as agents of the Russian government after the election.

They didn't register as agents of Russia, actually.

Manafort registered as an agent of Ukraine (which...he was an agent of the Russian backed part of Ukraine so sure, basically Russia).

Flynn, on the other hand, registered as an agent of Turkey. Which...yeah, that one is weirder.

Although, granted, we do know that Flynn seemed at least friendly with Putin too:

As someone who used to work for the Air Force, I know for a fact that I'd be behind bars if I pulled that email server thing. So Hillary getting prosecuted wouldn't bother me in the slightest even though I voted for her.

There are different rules for civilian vs military.

From what I've heard, something like 30% of the State Department uses outside email services. If I'm not mistaken, Rex Tillerson is also using a private email account, which isn't really news cause it's not illegal.

I like calling them CIS, cultural integrity soldiers

You should meme that. You people use "cis" as an insult, anyway, I guess to you it means "heterosexual" or whatever (yes, that's an insult in SJWs' minds).

I'm pretty sure you consider me an SJW and like...

I don't see either "cisgender" or "heterosexual" as insults. They're words that are useful for categorizing people. They actually both come from Latin word roots. Trans and Cis are greek words for across and the same--they have been used in Chemistry for decades (see trans-fats and cis-fats). Same with homo and hetero--they are prefixes meaning same and mixed; they are also used in words like homogeneous and heterogeneous.

Like...seriously, why would someone be insulted if I said they were heterosexual? Unless they were homosexual and were insulted that I assumed otherwise? I don't get it.

Of course it's a valid insult, people are insulted by it.

People are insulted by it?

Who?

Like...I sometimes post on some fairly social justice oriented forums, and the attitude seems to be "You're saying I fight for justice? Cool, thanks. I'm more of a social justice Mage, though."

Umm...I think when I was three?

My parents tell this story about how I went up to them at that age and was like

"soo...if one times ten is ten, and ten times ten is one hundred, does that mean ten times one hundred is one thousand?"

"Yes dear"

Yep, journalists are shitty and ruin people's lives in the name of truth. See stuff like revealing the sexual affairs of politicians. This has been the case forever. They still serve such an important role in democracy that we keep them around.

What stands out a little bit in this case is pointing the cannon of journalism at a private citizen who posted an internet gif. If it was made by a politician serving in congress, sure, publish his full name, the public has a right to know. But once they realized it was just some dude who made bad internet memes, they probably should have dropped the story.

I mean, not that I would retweet Trump personally, but this graph makes sense to me and is probably true for just about every twitter user.

I don't want to spam people who follow me. So I'll retweet one or two tweets from a person a day if I really like that person and think they're supercool and have great stuff to say.

So like...let's say theoretically I really liked Trump and thought his tweets were great. If he tweeted 7 times in a week, I might retweet every singe one of those tweets. If he tweeted 200 times in a week, I might retweet 10 of those.

So technically he goes from a 100% retweet rate to a 5% retweet rate for me personally, but I'm actually technically retweeting more of his tweets in the second scenario.

I'll probably raise Alfonse to 5* so that I can stop worrying about arena bonus heroes, and I'll need a good score if I want to get back into rank 20 with a relatively unmerged team (made my Nino +1 earlier this week; that's the sum total of my merges).

And oh god no, not another tempest trials. I hope they make it less time consuming, cause I actually stopped playing for like a week after I got my QP seal (I was so burnt out). Hopefully they make the requirements more reasonable this time.
