I thought the production value here was laughable, although I give them points for effort. I thought Cycle could maybe go a bit further. I agree that it was vague and confusing, but that was sort of what I liked about it. There are so many other ways to portray her desperation for money and the extremes someone will go to to survive that would be just as effective, possibly even moreso. Hell, you could even imply the animal abuse if you really wanted to go that route without showing the kitten literally scrambling under the heel and the nasty sound effect. It's not scary, it's just distasteful. Oh yeah, for sure. This is essentially how I felt about M is for Miscarriage and P is for Pressure is somewhat in the same vein. What makes this slightly better for me is that it slightly works as an idea instead of whatever lazy mess M is for Miscarriage was. The central idea here of the crushing nature of pressure works not just because of the literal pressure on the kitten, but the figurative pressure on the woman (to provide for her family). There is at least a reason why the death here is caused by pressure beyond the shock value. I really dont want to spend too much time defending this though because its terrible regardless haha. That at least though is why this was slightly better than Terrifier or M is for Miscarriage, which felt like they had no other ideas than to be as distasteful or shocking as possible without anything behind them. --- Moops? I did like how Inviso's and my write ups were so close we both even used the phrase "comeuppance" and complained about how we couldn't see it. Comeuppance is an awesome phrase so high fives all around on that mind meld. Mythiot posted... (On O is for Orgasm) Here it is, I knew from all the predictions that it was coming up soon. It's definitely not for everyone, but I loved how this short played with color, sound, and camera angles. Nice twist on the central concept of the anthology by making a short about "le petit mort," though it seems to end with something more literal as the vulnerability of intimacy is betrayed with the tightening of a leather belt. This artsy abstract storytelling is like catnip for me. Hm interesting. It doesn't change my perspective really but this all makes sense. Fun we have at least one person here that likes this style because its definitely at least unique compared to almost everything else in the compilations. --- Moops? Usually when I write a horror story, I picture a nasty event or revelation near the end, and then I go back to the beginning and do my best to guide the characters/plot to that endpoint. Yeah, theres definitely different ways to look at this and this is all just my personal opinion of course with no judgment directed at people who think otherwise. But, again, to me those two are linked here. There are certain subjects (suicide, miscarriages, stuff in that vein) where a thoughtless approach is almost inherently tasteless. --- Moops? Like even Zetsumetsu, which you could argue is going for shock (and which I personally didn't like) felt like it had a vision. It had a...something. This was thirty seconds of a poorly filmed woman walking in high heels (lol at that on top of it) to get a plunger and then BOOM miscarriage. It was tasteless because it was so lazy and thoughtless (imo, of course). Like he didn't have an idea and was like "well if I just show miscarriage, that's enough, right?!" Maybe there are places that would work but it isnt out of nowhere sandwiched between shorts with a squeaky magical poo and masturbation contests to the death. I believe the assignment was just to make a short film involving death that fit with the assigned letter. Most people did default to horror, but there were still a bunch that didn't.
