Ah, but wouldn't it be sweet to have one of those land at #6? Spoiling a movie's chance at the Top 5 is worth the additional couple days of torture IMO.

At this point I feel like its just better to see what you want to drop actually drop. Getting too close to the top where you start to have worrying if you were the only person here who actually disliked the movie.

I thought Ready or Not might be a bit of a marginal one just because it is somewhat redundant with You're Next on there and I'm not quite sure the impact its going to have long term. I loved it but I would also get it being cut especially in favor of Love Witch.

Other two make a lot of sense. Man, this list was almost even better somehow.

Other ones I thought might've been close to being cut were Curse of Chucky and Split

Little Hope>House of Ashes>Man of Medan, for me. But all are a huge step down from Until Dawn.

Salim was far and away my favorite character. My second favorite was nobody. My third favorite as a guy that the game introduced to me as "confident" and "intolerant". I hated the other three, especially when they were together. Being stuck in a scene with Rachel and Eric was a lot like being stuck in a car with a couple that hate each other and just haven't decided to break up yet.

Also, while I appreciate there isn't quite a "twist" like in the other games, what is here is almost worse. They keep trying to overexplain stuff in these games, and this one was no exception. Monsters are vampires? Cool. On board. Monsters are alien vampires? Uh. Ok. Monsters are zombie alien vampires? Wait, hold on. Monsters are IMMORTAL ZOMBIE ALIEN VAMPIRES. That's a bridge too. That's like three bridges too far, honestly. The whole third act in bonkers insane, and while I get that there is a level of suspension of disbelief you have to go in with when you're playing these games, IMMORTAL ZOMBIE ALIEN VAMPIRES is something I'm just not willing to ignore.

This was probably the best "game" of the series so far, and I'm still invested enough that I'm excited for the next one. But the story was a bit worse to me than the other two for a variety of reasons. They show the monster right away and take away all mystery. The heroes here all have enough ammo to make a Montanan separatist cult blush and training to make it feel like the vampires aren't even that much of a threat. There's that same weird tendency where scenes don't smoothly flow into each other or you have a character just awkwardly standing in the background because they may or may not be dead in the play through.

Nothing has really captured the magic of Until Dawn for me yet.

I am super excited for The Quarry though.

So I think we still have Red with his 30, plasma with his 30, FFD with his 30, and me with my 27. All likely different movies but not 100% for certain. Kind of curious which of these will be the last one off the board!

We need a Shadow of the Vampire-style reimagining where the goat they get to play Black Phillip is the actual devil.

I want a frame by frame remake except Black Phillip is played by a man in a goat suit from Party City.

Biggest scare: The rusty nail scene is almost unbearable from the moment that nail is revealed, and has made me irrationally worried around wooden staircases.

Never before has a single nail filled me with such existential dread. That's a Chekov's gun you're just waiting to go off and blow the head off of one of these poor people.

I really didnt like its inconsistent world-building and monster hearing ability the first time around. Actually, I still dont really.

Yeah, I liked this more than you and I was willing to overlook some of the silliness here because I thought the overall package was good enough that it warranted a little benefit of the doubt. Like the family drama was so good and there just happened to be monsters, so even if some stuff with the monsters is a little silly, it wasn't what I was most interested in anyway. But I definitely agree some of the world-building here is a bit sloppy and there were multiple times during the re-watch especially where I was like "...hey wait this doesn't make a ton of sense."

Still, really big fan of A Quiet Place. Glad it managed to crack the top ten.

Oh! I forgot about the thing that bugged me the most in the entire game.

After Nick and Salim worked together to kill a vampire, Eric started approaching and Nick could tell Salim to go hide or wait and trust that he'd be okay.

Eric, seeing Salim, pulls his gun on him and demands that he gets tied up.

Nick, after just telling Salim to trust him, doesn't explain the situation to Eric at all or say one single word.

That was so dumb.

Yeah this was confusing to me as well but from a slightly different angle since I played it differently.

The first choice in the scene is should Salim hide or wait in the open and I selected hide assuming I would then have an option to calmly explain the situation to Jason and Eric without an enemy combatant with a gun just standing there. But then the options are nothing suspicious here no sir lets leave or HES BEHIND THE ROCK TAKE HIM AWAY BOYS.

Ive come to peace with the fact that some of the choices in this game arent ideal because of the nature of the game but this one stood out to be as particularly poorly thought out.

I have THOUGHTS that will have to wait until Im at a computer.

Boseman is definitely close but Freeman is tiers below for me at least. Dukes energy in that role is fantastic. Im really excited to see where he goes in BP2.

Luis is great too so no hard feelings there.

Is the TC part of this CABAL thing they keep bringing up?

No but we have a lot of character overlap on my backups so Ive saved their characters frequently. CABAL is Han, War, Scare, scarlet, Sherry, and now I think hombad is likely official too after Smash. I actually thought Ermine was a part of it as well but hes doing his own thing here. There are also a couple of CABAL associated fanboys/gals that didnt join them in previous contests and Im not entirely sure theyll help them in future contests, but theyre helping them here.

CABAL is also just a joking term I made up and means nothing to anyone but me, but at least thats what Im referring to.

I really wished M'Baku would've caught on more in THE CABAL. I don't know at the expense of "who" at this point since all their remaining characters are fantastic. He is such a good character. Best part of Black Panther, imo. Winston Duke is phenomenal and even with such a good cast he always stood out to me. gg to Sherry for an almost top twenty finish.

Ranking BFFs!

This one was so hard for me to rank. Part of me wanted to put it above The Conjuring at the very least. Part of me wanted to drop it down below The Purge. I'm sort of re-ranking things in my head at the moment and I'm still not sure where I'd place this one.

Feels like I need a second viewing, but I just don't wanna.

I think around the 40 minute mark is where it got to me too. I was excited to follow them into their descent into madness, but it drags on way too long in that middle portion. It was this film and Creep where I kept checking the progress bar multiple times. I remember there was a point where I did it on here, did it again and only five minutes had passed and I wasn't sure if I wanted to finish. If I wasn't doing this for a list I might've tapped out like you did.

The cinematography was great and the acting was great, but I just could not get invested in this. Like I said in my write-up, there comes a point where the narrators become too unreliable and I feel like I'm basically watching nothing.

Haha why do I keep doing that? Fixed with no Iron Man self voting.

Ok.

So I've been thinking about The Lighthouse for a while now, and what it really reminds me of is a worse, drawn out version "Don't Hug Me I'm Scared" from Youtube. I really like the Don't Hug Me I'm Scared shorts and this sort of plays with the same things, but it doesn't really do it as effectively for me. Like I said, I think I need to rewatch it. This was the 29th movie I watched and I was doing so at like 1 in the morning two days before it was due. I feel like that might not be the best way to appreciate it, but the boredom I felt was genuine. The other movies I watched around it didn't have the same effect, so I can't blame it entirely on cramming a movie marathon into that final week.

AND WOW look at that divide! Absolutely no one had it in their middle ten.

Addition: Bradley Whitford is an underrated gem. Here and in Get Out.

Seconded. He might be my favorite part of Cabin in the Woods and he was equally incredible in Get Out.

While theme is an important aspect of story, I personally don't believe that thematic brilliance is enough to excuse things like dull characters, nonexistent plots, and sludgy pacing. The ideal story is one that's both intelligent and entertaining, something that appeals to the frontal lobe as well as the brainstem.

It is interesting, because my biggest problem with Cabin in the Woods is just this. There are a handful of films on this list that focus so much on theme or messaging that they sacrifice coherence in the story. The very, very end of Cabin is guilty of this, where Joss Whedon crawls in his own ass a bit, and decides that the overall statement he's trying to make is more important than the plot. So you have Marty act in this absolutely insufferable way because the writer really wants us to know that the way we're making horror movies is wrong and it deserves to be torn down. There is some absolutely valid criticism and meta-commentary here, for sure, but I feel like you can't just ignore the actual story you're trying to tell to accomplish that.

I adore Cabin in the Woods, but I do think it falls into this trap.

Yep, for sure. There are "pretentious artsy films" I love that I know a lot of other people hate (hello, A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night) and there are "pretentious artsy films" that a lot of people enjoy that I find absolutely insufferable.

This is so weird to me. I mean, to each their own, obviously and I'm not looking to change your mind. But for me the cinematography matters so much in horror. It is one of the most important things to me. I totally agree you need a solid story to build on but the cinematography really goes hand in hand. The framing of these shots is everything in effectively being scary.

You can have a movie that has a very interesting plot, but if it is filmed like an episode of Home Improvement, it is going to fail as a film (and you're likely going to get bored). Cinematography matters for reasons other than attempts at being "artsy".

Yeah, cinematography alone can make a boring moving interesting and vice versa. You can tell when a movie is shot in a "boring" fashion and it absolutely impacts the enjoyability of the film, even if you may not be thinking about it at the forefront of your mind.

I'll go with A Quiet Place as next to drop.

There's one I definitely consider boring, and a handful of others that if someone told me they thought they were boring I wouldn't agree but would at least understand where they're coming from. Like one in particular I love, but after it was over I thought "I bet people hated that for being boring". I anticipate seeing at least a couple of people critique it as such in their write-ups and I wouldn't necessarily fight them on that even though I strongly disagree personally.

There's a lot on this list though I can definitely understand complaints about, but "boring" is a critique that would surprise me.

My mid-20s rankings were juggled around a lot. Cabin could've easily been my #24 and not fallen victim to the tiebreaker.

It is for the best because now that I've had time to properly digest everything and thing more about stuff, I'd move Cabin down to my number 5 instead of 4, so it would've lost the tiebreaker if I didn't marathon like seven movies over the final week before write ups were due.

Yeah, I'm actually kinda shocked that only the two of us had it in our top five. It was definitely somewhat divisive amongst my friend group so maybe I should've seen in coming, but I just couldn't imagine people ranking this one below 20 or so and I thought it would have more top ten/five votes.

There's a couple in my top 12 I've been worried about for a while now, but Cabin was one of the ones I was concerned about the least.

Oh yeah that's a good point too. I would say that if I was being critical of these movies (and not that I necessarily agree) the following would be "artsy boring crap":

Babadook
VVitch
Lighthouse

And then these would be more "artsy pretentious bullshit". Again, I don't agree with this assessment for some or all of these but I at least would say these three definitely wouldn't be "boring".

Tucker, Get Out, Busan, and Quiet Place don't really even fit in that later bucket. They're not the kind of movies I think of when I think "artsy" (even though there are artistic elements).

Top ten...could be better. Honestly, anything 17 and lower are movies I really liked and would be happy with winning, so there are only two left I'm waiting to drop. I'd probably be a little disappointed if my number 16 wins too, but I'd be shocked if it did. Anything 12 and lower were movies I loved, so I have have six I'm actively cheering on.

Obviously, my ideal list would have two of the "fun" horror/comedies that dropped (Ready or Not/Happy Death Day/You're Next/The Cabin in the Woods) in the top ten over my 27 and 24) but it could still be worse.

Tomorrow is either the one I ranked 27, the one plasma ranked 30, the one red ranked 30, or the one Inviso ranked 30.

Maybe. Or its something else.
