True, but fans of the show refer to the original series as "The Original Series" to distinguish it from the others. It's practically canon at this point anyway.

Lost and Game of Thrones are great examples of shows that look bad in retrospect, because they both had shitty payoffs. As a result, it's rather hard to go back and watch them again knowing what you're gonna get.

The problem with The Simpsons is that its been bad-meh for 20+ years. It had about 5 years of really great work then its all downhill from there.

Well yeah, there's no arguing that at this point The Simpsons has only been 1/3 of an excellent series with a decade of greatness followed by 2 decades of "meh"

BUT as Compso says most shows don't even get that much.

The advantage the Simpson's has here is it doesn't do a long-running narrative. There is no story arc that needs to be completed. If you just stop watching after season 9, you aren't losing anything. Breaking Bad as a serialized drama does have to factor being viewed as a single cohesive story experience. So it does get hurt if it can't stick the landing. Game of Thrones is a good real-life example of that. Shitty payoff does in fact make the earlier seasons less good.

One of the problems with a list like this is there are so many different shows with different themes.

You can't really compare The Simpsons with Breaking Bad because they're so wildly different in tone and structure.

Like Jeopardy is on the list despite being a game show, and not a comedy/drama. Along with a few other talk shows. Do they really count? Sure, they have cultural impact. But I don't think most people would consider Jeopardy to be among the greatest shows ever if you asked them. Why not add Wheel of Fortune or Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?

I really haven't followed anime all that closely since Toonami way back in early 00s

I remember really liking it because it was a Star Wars movie that felt the most like an actual war movie. Blasters going off, and no rousing soundtrack during the opening gunfight.

But as time went on...yeah, I barely remember anything about it. It kind of shows that the things that make them Star Wars in the first place are more important than I thought

Exactly. It felt like a war movie, without a whole lot of silly space battles or tired Jedi/Sith nonsense... but it was also really boring except for the very end.
