Yet another SW show I started thinking "maybe I'll finally get it" and two episodes in and no, I don't get why people love this. It just felt so tonally all over the place, filled with easy choices to make plot work rather than just staying true to a character. These Inquisitors are basically all meant to be mini-Sith, yet not a single one of them has actually felt as evil and brutal as you'd expect (or was intimated by Rebels).

Rayman Origins (Wii)

I'm not big on platformers. I think one of the reasons for this is that they weren't a huge part of my childhood. I had a Looney Tunes platformer, Action Man action platformer, and Super Mario Land for the Gameboy, and those were really my only experience with them growing up. I played a ton of the first Wario Land, but that was about it. I was never big into Mario games, so in a certain way I was kinda dreading playing this.

But I needn't have dreaded. This is a great game. The gameplay has a perfect smoothness to it. Mario and Sonic have a certain necessity for speed to their level design. Sonic especially cries out for it due to the nature of the main character, but even Mario feels wrong when you're taking your time and looking around and thinking about stuff. Rayman Origins finds the perfect balance between giving you the opportunity to take it slow and kind of take your time with jumps and figuring out what you're supposed to do, but also rewarding you by being able to go through the level fast, just in feeling. Rayman Origins feels great when you're going through a stage and you're jumping at just the right time, gathering all the Lums, holding your run when you need to, doing the wall jumps...it just feels good to play (well).

So in that sense it's somewhat unfortunate when this feeling falters later in the game. It start with the last level of the first group of stages, where you unlock the power to run on walls. This powerup never felt good to use to me. I always had a tough time figuring out exactly how the physics worked and when the game wanted you to wallrun and when it wanted you to walljump. But worse is that when the second group of stages gets unlocked, fatigue was settling in for me and the game took away its casual nature and made itself more punishing. The second group of stages rely heavily on a trial-and-error gameplay design, where the game actually expects you to die, just so you learn to jump/attack/... at that specific spot next time. While this a grating way to learn how to play a game anyway (Origins is pretty free with checkpoints, but still), for me personally, death shouldn't be an inherent part of the game design, so this kind of learning curve just frustrates me to no end. There were some hard levels, but I feel this game tested my patience more than my skill.

Technically, this game is great. I played it on a Wii via a HDMI-converter and I still thought it looked great, so I can't imagine how gorgeous it looks on an actual HD-console like the 360 or PS3 (or on a PC). Music-wise, this track is in it, what more could you want?

I mean, The Twin Dilemma does a good job of showing off what they intended to do with Six...it's just a bad decision wrapped in an even more awful story.

In that sense, putting Power of the Daleks that low down, and ranking it as forgettable...yikes. Power of the Daleks is the first regeneration story. It's the complete and total change from the program, as the Doctor was a temperamental old man, and all of a sudden becomes a force of pure chaos.

S11 is bad because it does the unforgivable thing of being Doctor Who and boring.

Not only that, but so many of the episodes send out a kinda icky message. Punjab is like a Yas-focused story, yet she feels like a complete side character in it and the best scene goes to Graham (like so many scenes did). Kerblam! literally does a "maybe Amazon isn't that bad, y'know?". Arachnids goes for a "let's not kill any aliens! except when we put them in a room and then gas them all".

And god, the teeth villain...what a garbage fire. I'll watch Trial of a Time Lord over this cacophony.

Martha is one of those characters that just got the short end of the stick. The Doctor had to be showcased mourning the loss of Rose, considering her importance to the series up to this point, but this just mean Martha never really got to do anything.

Also I think the middle of this season was so rough because Davies fell ill for a while, which meant he had little to no impact on the production or the writing (because he rewrote pretty much every script during his tenure).

I feel like Jodie's Doctor is far more often silly than serious, as an explicit choice towards the more serious nature of Capaldi.

I can kinda understand what you mean about Matt Smith, but I think of the lot of the charm there is the fact that at the end of his tenure, he becomes an old man, and then he shifts wonderfully from old man in old body to young man in old body, back again to the old man in young body. But I guess we'll always differ on Matt Smith.

I would agree with the assessment of Sarah Jane. I don't think she's lame, and I enjoy her, but beyond her longevity I don't really understand the hype. I guess she did kinda set the example of being a bit more take-charge, where previous Companions were more passive and hid behind the Doctor more.

I love Love & Monsters though, it's the exact kind of story DW exists for. It has some dumb aspects, but as a whole I really enjoy it. Also they didn't turn the Cybermen into complete chumps; aside from The Tenth Planet, the Cybermen have always been complete chumps.

This is the first one I disagree with for a variety of reasons. I think Series 12 is easily the best of the Jodi seasons. TC is the single worst thing/story in all of Doctor Who, but the rest of the series is real good, and Fugitive of the Judoon runs rings around S11 and S13 by itself.

I also disagree on your assessment of Matt Smith versus Jodi. I think Matt Smith excels at being the old man in the young man's body, and I think Jodi (mostly due to the writing) never sells the idea that she's this ancient being who's had many adventures before. I think she's not great a serious or forlorn tbh.

Well deserved. Having watched all of the Classic Series, I would probably still rank Flux at the bottom of the list. Not only is it the culmination of Chibnall's awful reign, with the bare-boned companions and Doctor, the entire story is nonsensical and stupid. War of the Sontarans is the only episode in that series that I could enjoy, and Eve of the Daleks if it counts.
