Went to a Catholic k-8 school. After subbing in a traditional middle school, I am SO glad I never went to one.

This was the video I didn't know I needed.

I love that they played it straight. No final trickery, not even the joke that he actually hated its taste once he bit into it (which for a second was what I thought they were going for). He just found the nut, was scared of something happening, nothing did, he ate it, he enjoyed it, and he went on his way. It's refreshing to see the comedic butt-monkey win for a change.

The closest we would ever see is what we saw in the first 20 minutes of Kickass 2, where a team of superheroes basically spent all their time rescuing cats from trees and helping the elderly cross the street. More about the symbolism of heroes than actually going to fight crime.

This was an amazing movie. Loved every bit of it, and I thought Tails and Knuckles were both done right.

The cheesy "friendship" moment near the climax was really well-done and reminded me of the games. You can really buy that the three of them care for each other.

The one scene of the three of them splitting off in different directions to fight Robotnik and watching the blue, orange, and red streaks zooming down the streets just gave me chills; reminded me of my 90's self.

EDIT: Marked some sections as they may be spoilery if you haven't seen the movie.

So can we sue if a straight female teacher mentions her husband at all? What about if a teacher is referring to another teacher and says "she"? That's gender identity. Can we sue for that? And if a teacher refers to another teacher as "Ms." or "Mr.", we can sue for that, right? Those are related to gender identity.

Based on the language of that bill, it could potentially be interpreted that way. I'd imagine the law will be revisited the moment heterosexual teachers are sued for mentioning their husband or wife in casual conversation.

EDIT: Quoted the wrong post

TopicAnybody else find it kinda boring/lonely to work from home?
Zanzenburger
04/07/22 10:39:01 AM

Not so much lonely for me, but the social aspect of my job is almost a requirement for me to actually do my job. I'm a director of a major university department that often works with other departments for projects and programs. Almost every high-level task I have to do requires data, funding, or personnel from other departments. During the time I worked from home, it was almost impossible to get things in a timely manner from other departments. You can only email and TEAMS call someone so many times before they get sick of you and ignore you.

When I'm in the office, I can build relationships by stopping by other offices, relationships that makes it much easier to request things from people in a crunch. I don't see how management can do this from home. I like the flexibility of working from home every now and then when I need to be home for a contractor or something, but I would hate working from home 100% unless I worked a different job that was more conducive to it.

Pre-Ducktales 2017, I would have said Daffy, no contest. But even though Donald was still a bit underused in the reboot, they actually managed to give him enough genuine depth and heart that he ended up being one of my favorite characters. So now it's pretty even between Donald and Daffy.
I will agree that Ducktales 2017 definitely made Donald more relevant and likeable. Incorporating his anger issues into the actual plotline of the show was brilliant.

TopicHow do people EVER get past minimum wage and entry-level jobs?
Zanzenburger

There are two ways to move up, through internal promotion or applying elsewhere.

To move up through internal promotion, you need two things:
1) Do more than the minimum job duties
2) Make yourself visible to decision-makers
I often see people do 1), but fail to do 2), then wonder why they don't get promoted. It's crucial to be seen, be it by joining efforts or committees where supervisors, managers, and directors are around. You need to network and let them know who you are. I am about to get promoted this month to Associate VP simply by doing 1) and 2) above, so I can attest it works. Your mileage may vary depending on industry, though.

To move up through applying elsewhere, you need to build the skillsets needed for the next level up. You can gain that experience by either taking on more duties in your current role, or by doing projects outside of work through gig work, part time opportunities, or volunteering. Look at the job descriptions of positions you want to move up to, see the requirements, and work your hardest to gain those requirements. They could be education requirements, experience requirements, or both. Networking is important, too, but don't forget to actually make yourself a qualified candidate.

TopicHow come TV shows don't do clipshow episodes anymore?
Zanzenburger
04/01/22 2:29:25 PM

I always thought clip shows were done to save on budget for a show to fill a 22+ episode order for networks. With streaming making shows have shorter seasons (and even networks cutting down on full episode orders), there really isn't a need for them anymore.

EDIT: I'll also add that many streaming shows have an "extras" section that have highlight reels, character profiles, and season trailers. I think those are the closest thing to modern clip shows.

Hans in Frozen. I think he was acting in the best interest of the town up until he tried to kill Elsa back at the kingdom. It's like by that point they realized he was making too much sense and needed him to do an unredeemable thing to cement him as the film's villain.

Too bad that was before Disney began its "villain-less" movie kick or Frozen could have kept him as a misunderstood leader just trying to figure things out like everyone else (and the film would have been stronger for it by focusing on the sisters' struggles).

A friend of mine owns a horse business and wonders why sports aren't like horse competitions. Horse competitions aren't split by gender but by skill class. The more wins you get the higher your skill class. Kinda like ranked matches in e-sports. So you have guys compete with girls at various rank levels depending on their skill and winning streak.

Is there a reason other sports don't just use non-gendered rank classes? Legitimate question, as I don't know much about sports structure and there may be a reason why it is not done that way.

LinkedIn has developed a newsfeed that rivals Facebook, but without the political drama and memes. There is genuine discussion about real topics, and while every now and then they can get heated, I find it more tolerable than the facebook cesspool.

Many older professionals from what I have seen have fully migrated from facebook to LinkedIn. It's a different type of atmosphere there. Like when I post about a new research publication I got, my LinkedIn contacts are more likely to comment on it and ask questions, whereas on facebook I may just get a like and nothing else.

It also seems like most circumcised from birth people don't realise that the foreskin unrolls back over the shaft when erect effectively looking like a circumcised penis.
Quoting this for emphasis as I rarely ever see this mentioned in these types of topics.

Erect uncircumcised penises look identical to circumsized penises. The difference is only noticeable when flaccid. How often do you go around showing your flaccid penis to people?

wasnt that the one with the teenage boy who created an AI hologram pop star

always thought that was super unrealistic because any teenage boy with access to that technology would probably make an AI holographic stripper instead
Yes, it's that one. The kid was obsessed with music, so it made sense he made a holographic singer with the perfect voice. He was also a hopeless romantic who low-key fell in love with her despite knowing she wasn't real (and had an actual human girl who had feelings for him).

I thought the most powerful scene in the movie is when his female best friend and crush finds out he used the best features of girls he already knew to create the perfect popstar. She made him admit to her that he used her ears on the AI and she said something like "I can't believe my ears were the only part of me you found worthy to keep". That scene hit deep, man.

I think it's a mix of nostalgia and just growing up.

I didn't have cable as a kid so I didnt watch the DCOM classics until I was older. And most of them sucked, or at least were similar qualities to the newer movies.

As we get older our tastes change, so anything we see as an adult will look different than us as children.

The other side to that is that we also tend to only remember our favorites, while forgetting or ignoring mediocrity. For every "good" DCOM classic movie, there were tons of duds that were likely seen, but only the good ones were remembered. Kids watching DCOM movies today will likely only remember the top 5 movies of their generation and call it the classic years of DCOM movies in about 10-20 years.

Why does destroying a crate in FPS and Action games give you undamaged health, weapons and ammo?
Why do racing games teleport the car back to the road after it falls off a cliff?
Why do many platformers lose power-ups going from one level to another? What happens to them?
Why are many horror game protagonists so useless in combat situations and can only run and hide?
Why are many of the worlds Samus visits equipped with tools and passages that are perfectly tailored for her specific suit abilities?

Video games in general will add video-gamey mechanics that wouldn't make much sense in the real world, but are needed to create an enjoyable gameplay experience. If you want to play a game with realism, that's what simulators are for.

It's an amazing 3D remake of Pokmon Yellow. The catching mechanic is love it or hate it, and your Pikachu/Eevee gets OP really fast, but the gameplay itself is fun. Battles are great, Pokmon in the overworld are great, ability to have any Pokmon follow you around is great (even able to ride some of them), and there is just something magical about seeing Kanto in that style.

Having Jesse and James occasionally show up was also a neat little surprise.

I have to give props to the writers of the Metroid Prime series logs. Those are some of the most interesting non-plot-essential info logs I've ever read in a game. Learning about the scientists, space pirates, and natives of the various planets that Samus visits really brings the game to life. Some of them are quite cheeky, too.
