This is a menu option, and most games are balanced around the player making necessary upgrades to their gear in order to progress. Gold and Armor are in essence a secondary EXP system built upon the games core level-up features. If players lack the ability to kill the baddies to get the materials to make the armor, a difficulty slider would help with that. Additionally, players who don't like it when armor trivializes a game but still want to have the cool armor can push the difficulty higher than default. Plenty of games have been adopting sliders and most people really enjoy them. Especially the tryhard crowd who likes cranking everything up to max.

Personally I say just add Difficulty sliders. They're far more tunable than an entire difficulty mode is and can let players up the difficulty as well. Something as simple as a slider that says "Enemy Damage: 10% -- 100% -- 200%" makes for a fine-tuned experience that everyone can be happy with.

Actually hate to break it to you, but there's actual scientific studies proving that most girls prefer dolls because of the social aspect and boys prefer mechanical toys and this preference is observed as manifesting in at a very young age. It's been a while since I saw the study so I can't remember how young it was.
