Toem (PS5)

A cute photography game. Compared to something like Alba, I didn't like it quite as much, but it's solid. I thought the ending was pretty good -- any time a story builds up to a big reveal of something impressive at the end there's a chance the reveal will be disappointing, and in a video game you can't just not show it. Toem went simple and I think it worked out better that way.

It's free on PS+ right now so the price is definitely right. Easy platinum too, if you're into that.

Some of these (like KH) are probably easier for newcomers than they were for people who followed them from the beginning.

I've heard of Petal Crash but I thought it was a straight Panel de Pon clone. Knowing the gameplay is different makes me want to give it a shot.

I couldn't really get into Crossniq+, but it was in one of the big itch.io bundles so you might already have it, in which case it's worth a shot.

I don't exactly hate the Seath boss fight, but I find it extremely irritating how he seems practically hard-coded to always be facing you. Try circle-strafing around him and he'll just spin in place like a weirdo. He's another boss where you can get a unique item by breaking his tail, but good luck with that. I gave up on it real quick.

By the way, no story spoilers at all but something regarding the end of the game that I wish I had been warned about: killing the final boss chucks you into new game+ immediately, so make sure to finish everything you want to do before that. You'll know when it's coming.

Shout-out to my Dark Souls playthrough topic where I said Bed of Chaos was the worst boss in the game and was corrected that it's the worst boss in the series. Agreed that it's at least neat conceptually though.

Regarding Solaire: pretty sure you're fucked. IIRC the requirements to save him are insanely obscure.

Islets sounds like my kind of game, gonna have to look into that one!

Painted World of Ariamis is my favorite area in the game I think. Such great atmosphere. Glad you were able to find it!

Yellow Devil is just there. Sucking the fun out of the game, ruining the honestly interesting shifting platform layout of Wily Castle, leaving it as another generic FD variant with hazards off.

This too. Hazard switch was a great change but I wish you could choose which hazards specifically.

Ugh Smough was such a pain in the ass for me. Not even Ornstein and Smough so much, just Smough specifically. On the bright side, having to do the boss run over and over and over made me super good at parrying from fighting those damn silver knights. Anyway, good job getting through it!

Is this about zombies? not a fan of zombie games for some reason..
Only played the TWD Telltale games and the Resident Evil franchise

So I haven't actually played it but since no one else is answering, it's not about zombies, it's more like hide-and-seek with serial killers? One player is the killer and tries to find, catch, and kill everyone else by hanging them from hooks. The other four players are survivors and win by repairing a number of generators to open the escape doors and then getting out. From what I've heard it's fun with friends but less so with randos online because the best strategies to win don't make for particularly exciting gameplay. Oh, it's also basically a giant crossover of a bunch of horror icons now, which is cool.

Oh, yeah I did not figure that out, at least not consciously. Like I think I knew dodges took precedence but never really utilized them specifically for that.

Subnautica (PS5)

Continuing my quest to play every single game about scuba diving... Man, I dunno about this one. I liked a lot of it, but it also really proves that crafting/building games are just not for me. This game took me 26 hours to beat and it's not like the main quest is particularly involved, by itself. There's just a lot of busywork with collecting resources and trying to manage the game's awful inventory and building systems.

Everything is too slow, the building and power generation systems make zero sense, the game is super glitchy (I ran into enemies and walls that didn't actually exist, fish that followed me onto dry land where they flew around, building pieces that can't be rotated, and more), and there's no map, presumably just to make you suffer. Even Minecraft gives you a (shitty, shitty) map! If I was playing on PC I would absolutely have used console commands/mods to just give myself infinite resources and teleportation around the 10 hour mark, but oh well.

With that being said, when you're actually playing the game instead of doing chores it's really fun! I just don't think I'll be coming back to this one anytime soon. For my sensibilities I think I'd be better off just replaying ABZU.

It's been $28 on eShop before, never on sale on PSN though

We eventually enter the grand entry hall from the side, and dispose of two giant guards. These things annoy me until I realise they can heal, so instead of diving on them from above I split them up and deal with them normally. For their size they sure are adept at jumping. I'm surprised they respawn.

I very quickly decided to just run past those guys. They're super annoying to actually deal with.

I'd rather play Kid Icarus than Metroid. And Zelda 2, I think. Uprising is definitely the only truly great game in that series though.

Obviously, of course, in New Horizons, the Able Sisters suddenly became the absolute most important place in the game. I have to go there EVERY DAY to see the CUTE CLOTHES that I can put on my CUTE NON-GREMLIN AVATAR.

New Horizons was definitely enlightening in a "ah. so this is how i would dress if everything fit me and money was meaningless. ...i see" sort of way. As you say, it's somehow different from even a game like Pokemon where you play an avatar but it's not like, an avatar avatar.

The Americana-ness of it clued me in somehow. First two guesses were Fallout 4 and Assassin's Creed 3.

Ultimate Ganondorf is acceptable IMO, I wanted him to have a sword and he got one. He feels a lot more distinct from Captain Falcon now even if the actual changes from Melee/Brawl/4 don't amount to much.

They should put blue pig Ganon in the game though. Then you can have a character that actually does Ganon stuff like spin a trident and use magic.

Pretty sure the iron giant politely chucked itself off the cliff for me too, though I might be remembering wrong.

I had a fair amount of trouble with Quelaag, trying to solo her at least. Once I summoned Maneater Mildred as a distraction it was a pretty simple fight though. Nice work beating her on the second try!

Yeah I almost mentioned this when you first got to the boss, but I assumed you'd figure it out soon enough. Weirdly pathetic boss.

8 for me. Season 8 has a ton of absolute banger episodes, and then 9 has so many duds I wouldn't even call it worth watching, and it only gets way worse from there. Crazy how quickly the quality drops off.
