Nah nothing odd about it I know a lot of people who prefer it and some who never saw more than a few episodes of the original. Sure they miss out on some of the jokes and references but still get it overall.

Did you enjoy the movie? I absolutely loved it. It's one of the few movies that I have watched multiple times.

I'm not familiar with which movies he has directed. But I can suggest some that he acted in. Try Man on the Moon. It's a biography of Andy Kaufman. One of the greatest mind fuck comedians. Jim Carrey plays Kaufman so well. Devito plays his manager.
