Mobilezoid 09/20/22 4:23:04 PM #160 | 6/10: ABOVE AVERAGE TIER 130. D4DJ: First Mix https://myanimelist.net/anime/39681/D4DJ__First_Mix Fall 2020 (13 episodes) My Score: 6/10, MAL Score: 7.65/10 Best Character: Akashi Maho https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_wcGvZuF2AE Premise: Aimoto Rinku moves back to Japan after years of living in Africa. Her new school has many famous DJ units and, after meeting Akashi Maho, they decide to form their own. The Good: D4DJ is a music anime where four girls with different skills come together to form a DJ unit. It was neat learning about how DJing works, as well as the different roles the girls had in the performance such as Muni creating accompanying animations. The main group, Happy Around, also tries lots of different genres. I still liked the music from Photon Maiden the best. All of the main characters were fine, but Maho was my favorite. I rarely skipped the ED because it was just her at a turntable dancing and it was great. The Bad: Rinku won me over eventually, but, speaking as someone who usually likes energetic and happy girls, she was almost too much even for me. Her introduction is bursting into the wrong classroom and giving an overlong too-much-information introduction. Then she keeps stalking Maho and giving her seashells. Rinku annoyed me a lot in the beginning, so thankfully she became more tolerable as D4DJ went on. Overall: D4DJ is a solid music anime that covered things I'd never seen before thanks to its focus on DJing. Rinku was a bit much for me early on, but she slowly won me over, and the other three main characters were always good. It's always nice to watch an anime with fun characters and good music. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/19/22 1:54:58 PM #154 | (This is a weird write-up because I never finished it and it probably deserves at least a 7/10. I will immediately rewatch and finish this if it ever goes up on streaming again) 131. AKB0048 https://myanimelist.net/anime/12149/AKB0048 Spring 2012 (13 episodes), Winter 2013 (1/13 episodes, unfinished) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.36/10 S1, 7.64/10 S2 Best Character: Motomiya Nagisa https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3J1lBLqyif0 My Nagisa Figure: https://imgur.com/XiZwyC5 Premise: In a future where humanity has spread amongst the stars and music is outlawed, the idol group AKB0048 puts on guerilla concerts across the galaxy to bring hope to the oppressed. The Good: I dont know why I didnt finish AKB0048. I absolutely loved the first season. It just fell through the cracks when I was watching too many different things, and of course this is the anime that isnt available anywhere anymore. AKB0048 deserves to rank higher, I just dont remember it as well as it deserves. Since I cant rewatch it, I put it near the middle of the list. Still, even if I dont recall many specific moments, I have lots to talk about because AKB0048 fascinates me. Its about a dark future where music is banned for I dont think they ever give a reason. This means that brave warrior idols, carrying on the spirit of the real-world AKB48 idol group, must put on subversive concerts while evading the forces trying to stop them. Basically, this has the most awesome premise of anything ever. One of my favorite things about anime is that there are so many of them, so some are allowed to go nuts and do something as fun and different as this. Every single character is great, though if I had to pick favorites it would be Nagisa (who I bought a figure of because it was fifteen dollars) and Suzuko for her deadpan sense of humor. It was fun watching them train in dancing, singing, and even warfare because sometimes theyre on defense duty while others are doing the show. I remember grinning like an idiot during most of AKB0048, which again makes me wonder why the hell I never finished it. The Bad: The only bad part I remember of AKB0048 was one subplot where one girl wondered if she was carrying on the legacy of the original AKB48 member she was named after. I dont know anything about the real idol group or its members, so that kind of fell flat. Overall: Im sad I didnt finish ABK0048 and that I cant watch it again. It has one of the zaniest concepts ever and I loved it, but I dont remember it well enough to justify ranking it higher. COMING UP TOMORROW: 130: This anime gave me a bunch of seashells. 129: This anime was forced to flee when its village was attacked. 128: This anime is running away from home to play music. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/16/22 6:08:10 PM #123 | I hate to do this, but after over a month with a perfect schedule I think I've earned a stumble. SAO was actually the last write-up I had done in advance, and since then I've been doing them right before posting. On weekdays that's meant typing them on my phone at work (which might explain them slowly getting longer, it's harder to word count and edit on my phone). I'll try to get ahead again on the weekend so this doesn't happen again. Mobilezoid 09/16/22 5:34:40 PM #122 | (I havent watched the second season for this yet, but that was by choice. Since Ill be doing a spoiler-filled write-up for a character from it, I didnt want to include anything from a season thats currently airing. Not everyone watches new seasons right away. I didnt want people whod only seen S1 to skip the write-up to avoid getting spoiled.) 138. Classroom of the Elite https://myanimelist.net/anime/35507/Youkoso_Jitsuryoku_Shijou_Shugi_no_Kyoushitsu_e Summer 2017 (12 episodes) Summer 2022 (0 episodes, still airing) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.86/10 S1, Best Character: Ayanokouji Kiyotaka https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hsfBOwAIhOw Premise: Ayanokouji Kiyotaka is starting at a prestigious high school that ranks classes based on points. Hes put into the lowest, Class D, and now they must struggle to climb the ranks. The Good: Classroom of the Elite is a school anime where a class of rejects need to work together. It has lots of people with powerful personalities scheming and maneuvering to come out on top in challenges where the rules arent always clear. I absolutely love that premise, it turns high school into a battle of wits. The protagonist, Ayanokouji, is a great perspective into that. Ill talk about him more below, but Im a huge fan of characters where youre never sure how much they know, what theyre planning, or if theyll be able to get out of their latest jam. Horikita is his primary sidekick, and I like her a lot too. Shes abrasive and not as intelligent as she thinks, but thats what makes her work next to Ayanokouji. Lots of other students have over-the-top personalities too. Its fun watching them scheme against each other. The Bad: Classroom of the Elite comes off as pretentious at times with episodes opening with philosophical quotes and whatnot. I wish the whole story took itself as seriously as it pretends to. Its stupid that a major conflict in an otherwise interesting test involved stolen panties. Its stupid that a whole episode was dedicated to the boys trying to install cameras in the girls locker room. Classroom of the Elite should be smarter than that, and Id like it a lot more if it was. Overall: I enjoy the battles of wits in Classroom of the Elite. Sometimes the plot has elements that are stupid and bring it down, but for the most part the scheming kept me watching. I also loved Ayanokouji, which Ill cover more in the write-up below (which will have S1 spoilers only) https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/9/4/3/AAcDcBAADrlP.jpg CHARACTER: Ayanokouji Kiyotaka (Classroom of the Elite) https://myanimelist.net/character/128909/Kiyotaka_Ayanokouji Voiced by: Hanae Natsuki TOP 100 RANK: 68th SPOILERS FOR CLASSROOM OF THE ELITE (SEASON ONE ONLY) VIDEO LINK: Classroom of the Elite introduces Ayanokouji Kiyotaka as just one of many students who refuse to give up their seat for an old lady on the bus. He isnt a hero or a paragon of virtue. However, he is observant. He glances around, noting the faces of his future schoolmates, including Horikita. Ayanokouji likes to hang around in the background whenever possible and isnt emotive about much. Hes mostly nonplussed, for example, when Class D falls to zero points due to their poor behavior. He starts helping Horikita behind the scenes with things like organizing study sessions to ensure no one fails or proving a classmate's innocence in a fight. Ayanokouji doesnt seem too bothered by any of it, however. There are hints to his background and character throughout the season. Flashbacks to being raised in a mysterious white room, the fact that he got exactly average on every test (which is extremely unlikely unless it was deliberate), and he reveals his real physical prowess whenever hes forced to. Eventually his teacher, who also wants Class D to rise, tells Ayanokouji that the people who raised him have found him and want him back. Shell expel him unless he starts taking things seriously, which forces Ayanokouji to agree. It appears this is the one thing he actually cares about. The last arc of season one is their wilderness survival test. Ayanokouji manages some impressive tricks, maneuvering Horikita into a leadership position before orchestrating her downfall to throw off their rivals. Class D, despite a stupid stolen panties subplot, comes out on top against all odds. And Ayanokouji does it while remaining in the background, successfully attributing his contributions to others. The leader of Class C is angry at Horikita and barely knows Ayanokouji exists. I love characters like this, its like even the viewer is struggling to get ahead of his actual schemes. Still, the best part of Classroom of the Elite comes at the very end of the season (see the video I linked above). Horikita, in her shy tsundere way, is acknowledging Ayanokouji as an ally and we finally get to see his honest thoughts. He doesnt see her as an ally, or anyone else. He sees them all as tools in a sociopathic sense, just things that only matter if they serve his goals. That one moment put all of his actions throughout the season into a new light, and it solidified Ayanokouji as one of my top 100 characters. Lots of anime have brilliant characters or overpowered characters who always win. It's much rarer to have one who actually delves into the mindset of someone who seemingly doesn't care about anyone. I chose not to watch the second season while it was airing mostly because I wanted to binge it. I want to see Ayanokouji's schemes come together all at once, and I really hope he lives up to the promise the first season ended on. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/15/22 3:59:32 PM #114 | 139. Megalo Box https://myanimelist.net/anime/36563/Megalo_Box Spring 2018 (13 episodes), Spring 2021 (13 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.89/10 S1, 8.21/10 S2 Best Character: Nanbu Gansaku https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ByMrJy5p7q8 Premise: Boxing now uses wearable gears to enhance the strength of fighters. Joe makes a living in underground matches, but a worldwide tournament finally gives him a chance to prove himself. The Good: Megalo Box is a sports anime about futuristic boxing. I dont know much about boxing, but Ive seen some Rocky/Creed movies. The story in this would be right at home in one of those. Joe is the classic underdog who never had a chance to prove himself because hes stuck throwing matches against weaker opponents to earn money. Then he has a run-in with Yuri, the current champion, and Joe decides its time to join the tournament. Its not revolutionary, but its a solid story, plus there are plenty of subplots including taking in a group of orphans and shady deals with the crime boss he worked with. The fights are a highlight too, theyre all well animated and each of them is full of tension for different reasons. The Bad: I feel like the futuristic boxing premise was wasted because Joe stops wearing strength-enhancing gear pretty early. It makes his opponents seem weak when Joe can go toe-to-toe with them with such a huge handicap. Still, the second season is what holds Megalo Box back most for me. The story in it is miserable and ruins several characters. The big bad guy was such a caricature that I couldnt take him seriously. Overall: Megalo Box is a solid boxing anime, and I enjoyed the first seasons tournament. The story beats were standard for the story it was telling, but it was still fun to watch. The second season, sadly, was nowhere near as good. It had some neat moments, but it ruined some characters and introduced others who sucked. Still, the best thing about Megalo Box was Joes shady trainer, Nanbu Gansaku. Ill talk about him in the spoiler-filled write-up below. https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/6/5/6/AAcDcBAADrRI.jpg CHARACTER: Nanbu Gansaku (Megalo Box) https://myanimelist.net/character/160395/Gansaku_Nanbu Voiced by: Saitou Shirou TOP 100 RANK: 94th SPOILERS FOR MEGALO BOX VIDEO LINK: Joe may be the main character of Megalo Box, but I found Nanbu the most compelling. Hes the one who kept losing all his money on dog races, forcing him to set up fixed fights with a shady crime boss. He does this, not because he thinks Joe cant win, but because he thinks theres no point. They arent legal citizens, so theyll never rise above the underground. Why bother when its easy to make money another way? Nanbu often says that guys like them dont have a tomorrow. He's so scummy at the start, but even then he was lots of fun to watch. Once Joe wins a fight hes supposed to lose, Nanbu desperately makes a deal with the crime boss to win the tournament and give him the prize money. Hed always assured Joe that he was the real deal. Now Nanbu needs to prove it, and for that he needs to become a real trainer again. Theres an arc about one of his former students, a soldier who was injured in a war and came back to find that Nanbu abandoned him. It winds up being a misunderstanding (Nanbu isnt that crummy, hed heard the guy had died) but it was a good arc that expanded on his past. He'd already had one real deal fighter, which explains why Nanbu was so low at the start. Through harsh training, learning to believe in each other, and a little luck, Joe reaches the semifinals. Then its revealed that Nanbu had, in fact, made a different deal with the crime boss. Hed never intended for Joe to beat Yuri to win the tournament. Hed planned for Joe to take a dive in the semifinals. This obviously causes a rift, but Joe appears ready to fake the loss. The fact that Nanbu never truly believed in him was clearly a blow. Thats what makes the scene I linked at the top of the write-up so powerful. When Joe is down, it isnt the orphan Sachio or the rival Yuri who get him back up. Its Nanbus voice that gets Joe to rise. Nanbu finally stands up for something and says that Joe has a tomorrow worth fighting for. To make things right with the crime boss, Nanbu cuts out his only remaining eye. The crime boss sees this as a fair trade, since he thinks Nanbu has sacrificed the most precious thing in his life: the ability to see Joe in the finals. By this point in his character arc, however, Nanbu is at peace. He doesnt need to see. Just by putting his hands on the ring and feeling the vibrations, he can sense his students every move as Joe makes history. Nanbus arc was the best part of the first season of Megalo Box for me. He was also the only character the second season didnt ruin. He dies of a disease between seasons, so hes only in flashbacks. Hes the only one who understands all the complex emotions everyone is feeling. Nanbus death is what rips everyone apart, but he never blamed anyone. In the intervening years, he also managed to stay with them. Sachio often visited Nanbus grave. And Joe, at his lowest, hallucinated his mentor. This Nanbu wasnt portrayed as angry or disappointed or any of the things Joe likely thought he should be. In his usual scummy, caustic style, the hallucinated Nanbu just wanted Joe to make things right. I like to think Nanbus spirit was a big part in helping Joe find his way home. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Urara Meirocho https://myanimelist.net/anime/32924/Urara_Meirochou Winter 2017 (12 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.12/10 Best Character: Chiya https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JW910AAOhCQ Premise: Chiya, a girl mostly raised by animals in the mountains, arrives in a labyrinthine town that specializes in fortune telling. By learning to divine fate alongside her new friends, Chiya hopes to track down her long-lost mother. The Good: Urara Meirocho is a cute girls comedy anime with a supernatural aspect focusing on fortune telling. I always enjoy a premise like that. The fantastical element allows for lots of new situations while also making even the most typical CGDCT antics feel fresh. I like all four of the main characters. Chiya was the best because she was so upbeat and energetic, plus I liked all the gags where wild animals followed her around. Kon was a good best friend character too with her knockoff ouija board, and Nono with her haunted doll freaking everyone out was great. Koume was kind of meh but even she got a nice focus episode. Urara Meirocho, in addition to the usual cute girl jokes, also managed some emotional moments between the characters. Chiya is searching for her mother, but she has already found people who are dear to her. The Bad: While I'm usually neutral to fanservice, this is one where it really bugged me. There's a running gag that is never funny where Chiya thinks people need to display their belly when they apologize because that's how animals do it I guess. Whoever made this must have a belly fetish because the number of times Chiya shows hers or forces others to show theirs quickly gets uncomfortable. Overall: I love Urara Meirocho for mixing cute girl antics with a supernatural twist. The characters are all good with fun quirks, and the fortune telling allows for lots of unique situations. There are even some heartfelt moments. If not for the belly fanservice putting me off, I'd have ranked this anime a lot higher. Fantastical settings like this are one of my favorite things. There are just too many belly moments for me to look past. COMING UP TOMORROW: 140: In order to hunt monsters, this anime partially became one. 139: This anime is only losing here because the match is fixed. C94: This character is the one who fixed the match. (After six straight days of three anime per day, now it's time for five days of two to finish the tier. There are three more top 100 characters coming up and I tried to put them on days with two anime so it's like there are still three write-ups.) --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/14/22 4:15:13 PM #99 | 142. Spy x Family https://myanimelist.net/anime/50265/Spy_x_Family Spring 2022 (12 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 8.77/10 Best Character: Anya Forger https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U_rWZK_8vUY Premise: In order to preserve a tenuous peace between East and West, top spy Twilight is given a tough mission to create a fake family. As Loid Forger, he unwittingly adopts a mindreader, Anya, and marries an assassin, Yor. The Good: I obviously don't adore Spy x Family like most people did, but I still enjoyed a lot about it. The premise is a fun idea for a comedy, and each of the main characters add to the dynamic. Anya was easily my favorite for being cute and having amazing facial expressions whenever she hears something crazy from someone's thoughts. She's also the one who knows everyone's secrets, though she's too young to comprehend the magnitude of most of it. Her attempts to help the spy mission and do her best at school are adorable. Loid and Yor have their own quirks and zany situations too, but for me they mostly facilitated Anya's great moments. The Bad: I don't dislike SxF, but I do feel it wastes its potential in some ways. After one season, Yor being an assassin hasn't been used for much. It's telling that I'm still not sure which side she's loyal to. The setting also feels inconsistent. In one episode they're able to call upon hundreds of agents for an over-the-top adventure, then a few episodes later Loid is overworked because he's apparently the only spy they have. I dunno, the overall tone of the show just didn't resonate with me I guess. Overall: Spy x Family is a lot of fun, especially whenever it's focusing on Anya. I also enjoy the sweet moments of this fake family, who came together for selfish reasons, starting to truly care about each other. Some of the humor didn't work for me and I'd prefer a more consistent setting, but it's still an enjoyable anime. I just hope the future season reach me the way SxF has already reached so many other people. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/14/22 2:16:12 PM #97 | 143. Hina Logic: From Luck & Logic https://myanimelist.net/anime/34834/Hina_Logi__From_Luck___Logic Summer 2017 (12 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 6.65/10 Best Character: Liones Yelistratova https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=m-GYlA4mXvQ Premise: Princess Liones Yelistratova enters a school that trains Logicalists, a certain kind of magic user. There she makes many friends and learns to manage her abilities. The Good: Hina Logic is a spinoff from Luck & Logic, a battle anime I've never seen because I heard it's abysmal. This one has cute girls doing cute things, however, and while it still has impressive magical battles they're pretty much all low-stakes training exercises. The main draw to this anime is the character interactions, which are lighthearted fun and lead to lots of great jokes. Liones was my favorite because she had the strongest character, plus her supporting cast was fun, like her doting parents. I loved Mahiro too, she was a genius inventor type who was always blowing things up with her latest gadget. The Bad: This is pretty much a cute girls anime set in a magical academy, which is a great place to have one. However, aside from the occasional battle and a few standout moments, Hina Logic doesn't do a whole lot to set itself apart in the genre. I enjoyed all the characters, but I've seen their archetypes in plenty of other anime. The arc in the final episodes was too serious for my tastes too, I much preferred the lighthearted fun from earlier. Overall: Hina Logic is a fun cute girls anime with nice characters and some surprisingly well-animated battle sequences. I complained in the bad section that it ultimately didn't do anything new and the archetypes were generic, but I want to clarify that isn't a terrible thing. I'm always happy to find and watch another cute anime like this, because they're always a good time! --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Girls und Panzer https://myanimelist.net/anime/14131/Girls___Panzer Fall 2012 (12 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.52/10 Best Character: Akiyama Yukari https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ES06Fkkl8ac Premise: A tank battle sport is about to have its first worldwide championship. For Nishizumi Miho, who quit driving tanks after a traumatic incident, this event might force her to start again. The Good: Girls und Panzer is a fun concept. It's essentially a mix of a sports anime and a battle anime. The tank sport is way too expensive and dangerous to exist in real life, but that absurdity is what makes it so fun in an anime! I enjoyed all of the battles, they were full of neat strategizing and crazy maneuvers. Yukari was my favorite character by far for her love of tanks and always going the extra mile to help the team. Of the lesser characters, the group that cosplayed as historical figures was a lot of fun. The Bad: The characters in GuP didn't stand out to me much. There were a whole bunch of them, for one thing. The main school had several tank crews, never mind the opponent teams. They all at least had a fun gimmick or two, but it wasn't enough to endear me to all of them. The main characters were also really bland aside from Yukari. Miho is the only one I can remember much about and she didn't exactly impress me. Overall: Girls und Panzer is a fun anime about girls battling with tanks. It used the tank aspect really well, so I enjoyed most of the battles. Sadly, in a sports anime like this, lots of the enjoyment for me comes from watching the characters grow and bond with each other. In this, most of the characters were so basic that I didn't care about them at all. COMING UP TOMORROW: 143: This anime is leaving its small country to learn how to control its magic. 142: This anime read my mind and knew it would rank here. 141: This anime divined its future and knew it would rank here. (Really crappy hint for 143, my apologies. Any other hint I considered made me think of a bunch of other anime and 143 was never one of them. At least the other two share a fun theme!) --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |

Mobilezoid 09/13/22 5:49:15 PM #93 | 145. Mitsuboshi Colors https://myanimelist.net/anime/35078/Mitsuboshi_Colors Winter 2018 (12 episodes) My Score: 5/10, MAL Score: 7.42/10 Best Character: Kotoha https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9xTE1ApWi00 Premise: Yui, Kotoha, and Sacchan are three imaginative elementary school girls who go on adventures together. They often like to pretend theyre defending the city as the play. The Good: Mitsuboshi Colors is a lighthearted comedy anime that really nailed the feeling of playing with friends at an age where imagination is pretty much all you need. The three girls take their fun to more comedic extremes than most kids would, but it still made me nostalgic for playing with my own friends as a child. I liked a lot of the gags their antics led to, and Kotoha was easily my favorite of the three. I also liked how the various side characters around town reacted to them differently. Some gave them little toys or played along, but there were some great running gags with an exasperated policeman who they often harassed. The Bad: This is another anime where I don't have anything bad to say about it, I just can't justify ranking it any higher. There isn't a whole lot of depth to anything, but I think adding character arcs or big themes would ruin the aura of childlike wonder so I'm glad they didn't try. Overall: Mitsuboshi Colors excels at a certain kind of comedy. It's nice watching an anime like this sometimes, even if it ultimately didn't do anything special to elevate it into my favorites. I still enjoyed watching the girls and their adventures. --- **R.O.B.A.Z.O.I.D** (On mobile) |
