It's how they spread their scent and it makes them comfortable because they are in their territory. You take that ability to scent mark, you stress the cat. It will also hurt when they walk on litter or run, the claws do so much other than a weapon. It's a tool. Imagine you live without a fingernail, it's not a death sentence but you cannot do a lot of stuff you take for granted. Stressed cat will get more aggressive, and they will attack.
