https://talkingpointsmemo.com/news/atticus-finch-harper-lee-go-set-a-watchman-racism

NEW YORK (AP) Harper Lees unexpected new novel offers an unexpected and startling take on an American literary saint, Atticus Finch.

Go Set a Watchman is set in the 1950s, 20 years after Lees celebrated To Kill a Mockingbird, and finds Atticus hostile to the growing civil rights movement. In one particularly dramatic encounter with his now-adult daughter, Scout, the upright Alabama lawyer who famously defended a black man in Mockingbird condemns the NAACP as opportunists and troublemakers and labels blacks as too backward to share fully in the responsibilities of citizenship.

Would you want your state governments run by people who dont know how to run em? argues the man portrayed by Oscar-winner Gregory Peck in the 1962 film adaptation of Mockingbird.

Theyve made terrific progress in adapting themselves to white ways, but theyre far from it yet....

...Publisher HarperCollins, anticipating concerns that Atticus harsh talk will disillusion millions of fans, issued a statement late Friday saying, The question of Atticuss racism is one of the most important and critical elements in this novel, and it should be considered in the context of the books broader moral themes.

Go Set a Watchman explores racism and changing attitudes in the South during the 1950s in a bold and unflinching way, the statement reads. At its heart, it is the coming-of-age story of a young woman who struggles to reconcile the saintly figure of her beloved father with her own more enlightened views. In Go Set a Watchman, Scout takes center stage as we witness her anger toward and stand against prejudice and social injustice.

Rarely has news of a novel been so celebrated and so dreaded since HarperCollins shocked the world in February by announcing that a second Harper Lee novel was coming, an event her fans had long given up on and Lee had often said wouldnt happen.

HarperCollins has reported that pre-orders for Watchman are the highest in company history, and Amazon.com has announced that the novels pre-orders are the strongest since the last Harry Potter story, which came out in 2007.

But questions have been raised all along about the quality of the book, completed when Lee was a young and unpublished writer and received coolly by publishers, and whether the 89-year-old Lee was fully aware of the planned release.

Alabama officials, responding to at least one complaint of possible elder abuse, even visited with Lee at her nursing home in Monroeville and concluded she was indeed capable of making decisions about the book.

The portrait of Atticus, a supposed liberal revealing crude prejudices, will likely re-energize an old debate about Mockingbird, which has long been admired more by whites than by blacks. Winner of the Pulitzer Prize in 1961, and widely praised as a sensitive portrait of racial tension as seen through the eyes of a child in 1930s Alabama, it also has been criticized as sentimental and paternalistic.

In an interview with The Associated Press earlier this year, Nobel laureate Toni Morrison called it a white savior narrative, one of those that reduced blacks to onlookers in their own struggles for equal rights.

I think I vaguely remember local telephone calls in pay phones costing 20 cents. I definitely remember when they were 25 cents. I remember a pack of regular cigarettes (Marlboros and Camels) cost $2. I remember the cheapest unleaded gas costing like $1.07 per gallon.

McDonald's had those 29 cent hamburgers, IIRC.

A dollar could get you like several pieces of candy at the liquor store.

A soda can cost 50 cents at a vending machine.

https://kdvr.com/reviews/br/kitchen-br/coffee-accessories-br/starbucks-is-phasing-out-disposable-cups-heres-what-that-means-for-you/

If you love a latte to-go but hate what disposable cups are doing to the environment, youll be pleased that Starbucks is beginning to implement a plan to phase out its disposable cups. However, if you havent yet embraced reusable cups, you might be wondering what this change will mean for you. Thankfully, theres still time to adjust and there will be options for those who get caught without a cup on them.

When is Starbucks getting rid of disposable cups?
You dont need to worry just yet because Starbucks is making gradual changes with the aim to completely phase out disposable cups by 2025.

Why is Starbucks phasing out disposable cups?
Starbucks wants to phase out disposable cups for environmental reasons. The company aims to cut its carbon, waste and water footprints in half by 2030 and getting rid of disposable cups is part of this plan.

Although disposable cups are primarily made from paper, the lining that makes them watertight means they arent recyclable. As such, billions of Starbucks cups end up in landfill each year, not to mention littering oceans, waterways and the countryside.

What will your options be?
Phasing out disposable cups is objectively good for the planet, but its still natural to wonder what this will all mean for you. Depending on your preferences, youll be able to choose from a few options.

Bring your own cup
Perhaps the easiest option is to simply bring your own reusable cup or travel mug with you to Starbucks. At present, you get a discount for bringing your own cup so it doesnt take too long before its paid for itself, especially if you drink coffee from Starbucks daily.

Borrow a cup
Starbucks is bringing in a borrow-a-cup program where youll be able to pay a deposit of $1 to get your drink in a reusable cup and have this deposit returned when you bring the cup back. This is a good option if you forget your reusable mug or dont want to buy one.

Drink in
Although many Starbucks locations closed their seating in response to the COVID-19 pandemic, its likely customers will have the option to drink their coffee in the shop out of a ceramic mug as part of the plan to phase out disposables.

Should you start bringing your own cup to Starbucks?
It already makes sense to bring your own reusable takeout cup to Starbucks because you get $0.10 off the price of your drink. This is an incentive Starbucks has offered since the 1980s. However, starting in 2022, Starbucks is going to start testing various financial incentives for bringing your own cup and penalties for not doing so. This will include $0.10 fees for using a disposable cup and discounts of up to $0.50 for bringing your own....

All recreational drugs should be legal. The only drugs that should be illegal are the ones that can be used to poison other people like the date rape drug.

Gary Johnson met with a large group of Judges when he was running for President, and they essentially told him they're okay with what he says about drugs except for meth. They basically said meth destroys more people and lives than any other drug they see come into their courtrooms.

Gary seems to think if we decriminalize hard drugs like cocaine, people won't do meth if they can afford legal, cheap cocaine.

https://www.msn.com/en-us/news/us/ohio-becomes-latest-state-to-allow-concealed-gun-carry-without-a-permit/ar-AAV3EM0

Ohioans are no longer required to have a concealed carry permit for their firearms or undergo background checks, following the governor signing Republican-backed legislation.

Ohio Governor Mike DeWine signed a bill that eliminates a concealed carry permit requirement for Ohioans ages 21 and over who are legally eligible to own and carry a firearm in the state.

Senate Bill 215 will go into effect in 90 days and will remove permitting, training and background check requirements to carry a concealed weapon. Prior law required citizens to have eight hours of training, a background check and an application through their local sheriff.

New concealed carry law signed by Gov. DeWine allows anybody in Ohio tocarry a concealed weapon WITHOUT a permit. (unless you have certain prior criminal offenses). Senate Bill 215 Takes effect in 90 days...

...Other states allowing law-abiding citizens to a concealed handgun include Alabama, Kentucky, Mississippi and Texas.

"Any right requiring a fee or government permission slip isn't much of a right at all. That's why the NRA worked tirelessly with state leaders and legislators to pass this landmark legislation in Ohio," said Jason Ouimet, NRA-ILA executive director. "The NRA commends Gov. DeWine for signing this important piece of legislation that protects the Second Amendment rights of all law-abiding Buckeyes."

The bill makes several changes to Ohio's concealed carry laws.

Citizens will no longer have the duty to "promptly" notify every law enforcement officer during an official stop. Instead, the person must disclose that they are carrying a concealed handgun only after an officer asks.

Until now, motorists during a traffic stop who failed to notify an officer that they had a gun faced a first-degree misdemeanor, punishable by up to six months in jail, a $1,000 fine and suspension of their concealed handgun license. Senate Bill 215 now eliminates that penalty.

The enactment of "constitutional carry" or "permitless carry" has been opposed by law enforcement and anti-gun violence activists during the approval process.

"Laws currently protect officers and the public they serve by requiring that those who go armed in public report the presence of loaded firearms, thereby including this awareness in any potentially dangerous situation," said Robin Hawkins member of the Ohio Veterans and Public Safety Committee. "Blindfolding officers and weighting the individual's right to carry loaded firearms with no restrictions makes everyone, especially those charged with public safety, less safe."

The bill also changes the law for carrying the license. For those citizens who do decide to obtain a permit, they will no longer be required to carry the license on their person.
