I think it really caught the perfect balance of being a forward moving narrative, but giving the player options to change it up. Nothing has quite reached that level. Majora's Mask and Wind Waker were a lot more linear, but still had a couple instances where you could mix things up. ALBW was too open in my opinion, where there was no sense of really advancing. I think BotW being open was a good call though. For that game, it was necessary, and it made it better.
