| El_Marsh 09/28/22 8:01:23 AM #29 | It is simultaneously Usopp's weakest moment as a crew member and his strongest moment in terms of character (to that point). Him basically telling Luffy to fuck off because he wanted to replace the derelict Merry was wrong for several reasons. The fact that he was willing to fight his obviously MUCH stronger best friend and captain for his belief in something was something of a turning point for Usopp the coward. Don't get me wrong, he's still a coward (it's just who he is) but until that moment, Usopp had really just tagged along and hadn't shown any real conviction for anything aside from avoiding fights. His fight with Luffy showed that deep, deep down, he actually does have a spine and will fight anyone if he believes strongly enough in something, well-reasoned or not. It was also a key moment for Luffy as Captain. To that point, Luffy's will and strength had justified his role as Captain but he'd never had to deal with the "weight" of the job. Confronting Usopp's insubordination was a stark reality check for his duty as the leader of his crew. It wasn't an enjoyable experience but it was utterly necessary to demonstrate that goofy and whimsical though he may be, he will NOT tolerate disrespect and rebuke for doing his job as Captain of his ship. Note that his crewmates protest his decisions regularly BUT they always go along with it because ultimately Luffy's ship and they respect that. Usopp's stand was the example of what happens when protestation becomes outright insubordination. That's it. He's a really talented performer but his gimmick isn't that of some super serious title chaser. In fact, it's the exact opposite. I think the same was equally true for Macho Man, hell maybe even more so because despite always being certifiably "second" to Hogan in terms of booking, Savage was arguably as big of a cultural icon. He was certainly held in much better regard than Hogan before his death and the latter's public private controversy. So no, I don't think there's a comparison because both were/are held as top stars despite not getting as much focus with the title as their kayfabe BFFs turned hated rivals. It's the kind of thing that's impossible to sustain without impeccable health, especially after age 30 (he was 32 in his first season with the Angels). He hit 445 HRs in his first 11 seasons in St. Louis (408 in his first 10). He hit 234 over the next 10 seasons as he went from 32 to 41 years old and he's hit 21 this year at age 42. His batting average hasn't approached .300 since he left St. Louis initially but the fact that it's still just a couple of notches below that number for his career after a solid decade of batting .250ish is testament to just how amazing his first decade was (he hit .331 during his first decade and that .299 season during year 11 dropped his career mark to .328 when he signed with the Angels). I'd still say he's aged "pretty well" as most guys could only dream of kicking around so long and popping 20 HRs. Guts is a magnet for suffering because of his demon brand but he wasn't exactly living an idyllic life before that either. He was literally born to suffer (remember how he was found beneath a hanging tree full of corpses, including that of his mother whom he was still attached to via umbilical cord?) yet has lived through it all, via his own martial prowess and instinct, opportune interventions by various parties, or sheer dumb luck because that's what he does: he survives.
