which scenario would you prefer:

A) food stamp abuser is denied their food stamp benefits for buying luxuries, but still buys luxuries anyway, and they let their child go hungry

B) food stamp abuser buys luxuries, buys necessities with food stamps

C) CPS steps in with regard to A), spends 300x the cost of just letting the abuser skate by enjoying some beer and soda to rip the child from their home which was previously providing the needed food via food stamp "abuse" and force them into a foster home, where they suffer significantly worse psychological and physical abuse, possibly at the hands of a family abusing the foster system to draw a check from the government, possibly going hungry there

Id say same. But also in a way easier as well. My current company is overly bloated with processes that add on to our day to day.

And yeah if it paid off that would be huge for my family. Thats college money for my daughter, etc. Even if its just 1X at exit I would get my money back over time.

then go for it, you've already assessed that the low end scenario isn't likely, and the time/money costs in the short term aren't a big hit

my experience with startups is usually nothing like this, the ones i've spoken to have been clear that i'd be looking at five years of hell for my payout, so i've generally not been interested even in the biggest payout return scenarios

if the workload is what you say, you're taking a small risk for a substantial probable return.

personally, i'm already well established so i would never take such a job on, i don't need that kind of time->potential money exchange to meet my long term financial goals. and i think you're likely as well established as i am, so I'd be skeptical of the exchange's value

unfortunately most solar arrays are plugged into the grid, so in the event of rolling blackouts, the small amount of electricity required to operate your panels will not be supplied, so they cannot generate the larger amount they produce when supplied

having solar is definitely good for your community though! reduces your personal drawing from the grid, since you likely produce more than you use during the 4-9pm hours.

Your second paragraph is spot on, but I can't agree with the first. I know enough people who have had success, myself included, to know they can work. I always say the best course is dating apps plus everything you said. No reason to focus on online vs offline.

my observation: dating apps, like everything else, work great if you are the kind of man who is comfortable in every space and make friends/new partners easy, which is to say a high status guy at the top of the heap.

but given the relative competition availability, they're probably the first place where your success would falter if you're not at the top.

Yeah, the whole line of thinking is almost in reverse order. The self-worth should come before the girlfriend. Because that's what will attract a potential girlfriend. And "self-worth" can come from simply having a positive attitude. It doesn't need to be attached to money, status, career accomplishments, or anything like that. If you're fun to be around, then people will like being around you.

Agreed. I don't think it needs to one hobby that fulfills all of them, as your example above, but that's not a bad one. But just going out and doing stuff in general. I always advocate that people joining Meetup, as I have helped run them and have seen lots of guys from asocial loners to having friends and getting into relationships. It works.

imo better to have three separate hobbies, all of which fulfill some part of each but perhaps one is more physical, one more social. means more to talk about.

i think we tell guys this a lot but really it's half of the message

the whole message is you need to improve yourself such that you find your life enjoyable, which generally means doing some things that aren't instantly enjoyable, but will be eventually--and keep doing them until they're a habit

in doing so, you'll come into contact with women (because women are also improving themselves, particularly the women you'd actually like to be dating) and you'll have more than a snowball's chance in hell of them liking you

physical + mental + social hobby pursuit is at the center of that.

honestly the best advice i can give any young adult man--better for a man in his 20s than his 30s, but even in 30s--is join a 'beer league' sports team (volo, etc) for a 'give no fucks' sport like kickball, and go to all the social events afterward

solves the three problems most adult men seem to have: nothing to keep them in shape, nothing to talk about that others can relate to, and no social network to practice social skills with and/or provide social proof

more likely the effect is cultural- millenial men were raised by boomers who taught them that the way to find a partner was to have wealth and be nice, so they did those things

but modern culture has shifted. women work, and those things are now the bare minimum, and more is expected, but men who didn't form lasting bonds with other men had no one to teach them what actually attracted women in their youth

confidence and experience snowball, so those who fall behind early on in life never truly catch up, though they can catch up enough to find a partner if they focus on self-improvement

but now we also have this ultra-toxic secondary culture (which of course gets its foot in the door by telling men the correct things to do for self-improvement--get a physical and mental hobby) that tells them how the women they do find are actually just using them and will divorce them later (nevermind that they tend to have little to be used for) so they wind up turning into fascists that exude the 'stay away' vibes

in my case, i have a dog who beat cancer at the cost of a leg, another dog whose IVDD is so severe we have to act as though his spine is made of glass, and my wife's own spine also has exhibited the same characteristic narrowing which causes her extremely debilitating pain, so there are three beings (two of whom weigh more than 50 pounds) that I have to constantly carry up and down stairs, prepare food and clean up after because their ability to do so for themselves is limited

also i take up to 60 hours of calls a week with people in time zones up to 12 hours off my own so if i were in the office doing a lot of my job, i'd be there alone. on the side i manage a team that does supporting analytic work, who manage to keep me up to date via instant messaging and calls just fine.

i'm sure other people have domestic obligations too, not everyone is a single man who lives alone in a studio apartment containing a 65" HDTV, a couch, a mattress, and a large pile of take-out containers.
