Both those things are Republican though. It takes time and investment to reduce a deficit. You can't just drop spending immediately and temporarily and expect it to be a permanent fix. Well, you can, if you're a politician. But you'd be wrong.

Discussions tend to get a bit hairy when statistics are involved with correlation vs causation issues. That aside I was actually referring to deterring the person that the death penalty was actually applied to, because they definitely wouldn't be able to commit another crime afterwards. I suppose this qualifies more as incapacitation than deterrence though.

I wouldn't say it serves no purpose, deterrence is one of the four main purposes of prison. As far as expenses go, that's more of an argument against the process rather than the death penalty itself. There are certainly moral arguments to be had over the death penalty but logistical arguments don't generally pertain to the death penalty in and of itself.

Does that mean a lot when they're elected and boosted up by all the other sites you distance it from? Doesn't isolate it or make it come across as much more sincere. It still has the gameshow element you hear people liken it to, where not only they're looking for the quip or soundbyte that'll go viral or catch on with their fans and hard carry them for a while, but the site is actively encouraging it with its format.

Sometimes you see them start a string of posts with (1/8) or something and think that there absolutely must be a less dumb way to do this. It's already hip for people to yell fake news in response to things they dislike, even ironically. Who needs an echo chamber when you've got chaos?

On one hand I agree that the format isn't conducive to civil discourse, but on the other I think that's probably why it's so successful. For some reason people seek out things that make them mad and the platform doesn't give you enough characters to form a cohesive argument. It really is more effective as a republishing site but it's also being used as a public forum.

Initially maybe, but if it starts getting criticism for unchecked misinformation its not going to look good. There is a reason twitter stood up against it in the first place. Its not just a morality decision. They were protecting their interests.

I dunno, Fox News gets nearly double the ratings in prime time than the next highest news channel by virtue of being the only mainstream right-wing channel. I think you could see something similar here depending on how Elon handles moderation.

I think you're overestimating the amount of people that care strongly enough and underestimating the amount of people that feel alienated by current policies. Guess we won't have to wait very long to see though.

Twitter doesn't actually hold a significant share of the market compared to, say, Facebook, but it's usually used by a more "elite" userbase. Think public officials, celebrities, news sites. A lot of information is shared through twitter so there are genuine concerns about turning it into an echo chamber when it functions similarly to a public square.

But now that he owns it outright he needs to consider its value. He lets Trump back and I can see an exodus of sorts.
