Katy ISD police 'investigated' a library book after complaint alleged it was 'harmful to minors'

A Katy ISD police officer temporarily removed a copy of a book from a high school library last month as part of an investigation after a woman filed a criminal complaint alleging the district was providing harmful material to minors.
The book, Flamer, by Mike Curato, had been formally reviewed by a committee and deemed appropriate for high school students in the district in March, records show. However, a vocal group of parents and community members continued to speak out against the book at many board meetings, saying the descriptions of sex in the work constitute pornography.

During the investigation process, the book was checked out by Katy ISD police, said Maria Corrales DiPetta, general manager of media relations for the district.
Flamer is a graphic novel about a boy navigating friendship and bullying at a summer camp that explores issues of sexuality and sexual orientation. It won the Lambda Literary Award for Children's and Young Adult Literature in 2021. It was also listed in The Horn Book Magazine's ranking of the best books of 2020.

On July 21, the complainant came into the district policeand contended the school system was violating Texas penal code 43.24, which prohibits the sale, distribution or display of harmful material to minors because the book was in high school libraries, according to a Katy ISD police report.
The woman told police she already filed complaints about the book with the district, according to the police report, but she was not satisfied with the outcome of the subsequent decision made regarding its appropriateness. She said her complaint originated at Jordan High School, but the book was also in other high schools, so she wanted to extend the grievance to the entire district, the document says.

The complainant said she wanted to file a police report so she may then take a copy of it to the Texas Rangers, the document says.
Per Governor Abbott and the TEA, the book Flamer should have been removed from KISD library shelves but it still remains, the woman said in an email to the officer. The KISD Police Report will be sent to the Texas Rangers office
That day, the KISD officer visited Jordan High School and located the book in the library, the report says.

(The principal) explained that when Flamer was initially complained on, it was pulled from school library shelves, reviewed, permanently removed from junior high libraries, and then returned to high school libraries upon being deemed appropriate for high school, reads the police report.
The officer then met with a district deputy superintendent, who provided documents from the review process.
The report says the claim was unsubstantiated.

The book has gone through multiple review processes by the district, including one with a committee made up of librarians, parents, and teachers, and deemed appropriate for high school libraries, the report reads. The complainant also still has the opportunity to take her complaint before the KISD board.

A Houston Chronicle analysis found the wave of book reviews and removals that swept across Texas in the last year was driven more by politicians than parents, contradicting claims that recent book bans were the result of a nationwide parental rights movement to have more control over learning materials.
In Katy ISD, 104 books were reviewed and 43 were removed or partially removed since 2018, making it one of the most restrictive in the state among districts that responded to public information act requests.

Flamer was reviewed for appropriateness by seven other Texas districts, the Chronicle found. Three, including Katy, Northeast and Keller ISDs, opted to keep the book on shelves. One, Callisburg ISD, permanently removed all copies and Clear Creek ISD decided it was appropriate only for high school students. The outcomes of reviews in Amarillo and Pasadena ISDs were unclear in the documents the district provided.
Anti-censorship advocates such as the ACLU of Texas and the American Library Association have said Katy ISDs policy of temporarily removing books while they are under review violates due process by not allowing the review process to play out before removing the book.

It is also very racist. If someone who is 3/4 German happens to be 1/4 black (therefore looking black) says he is German or German-American he will be told he cant claim it
That.....isn't true at all. Look at Germany's national soccer team. There are a bunch of black players who proudly claim to be German and are accepted for being German.
