adjl 10/10/22 11:55:26 AM #122 | GanonsSpirit posted... But you didn't say "Blizzard published Immortal" you said "Making" refers to the total process of creating a game. Publishing is a part of that, as is contracting a studio to develop the game you want to make and making sure that development is progressing according to your desired outcomes. Heck, if anything, Blizzard is probably more to blame for Immortal's issues than NetEase is, given that they would have been the ones dictating what sort of monetization should have gone in. The part that is actually a half-passable game is actually something NetEase should be credited for, because I very much doubt Blizzard did anything to contribute to that beyond loaning them the IP. If you really want to die on that pedantic hill, that's your prerogative, but given that the broader discussion is about Blizzard as a company and not any specific one of their development teams, attributing Immortal to them with no regard for who actually did the development is pretty reasonable and nobody is actually going to be confused by my word choice. To that end, I'm not sure why anyone would care enough to bring it up, speaking as an insufferable pedant myself, but you do you. [LFAQs-redacted-quote] Not really. Like, at all. It's a completely accurate statement because the publisher very often does provide quite a bit of direction to the development process. That direction often hurts the final product (especially in the AAA sphere) because it amounts to "stop trying to make the game you think will be good and make the game I think will be profitable instead," which often leads to the game being designed around more monetization and/or shoehorned into chasing current market trends instead of what the development team is actually good at (see: Anthem), but it's nevertheless very commonly a thing that happens. Meanwhile, I don't even know what analogy you're trying to create, except the very, very loose association of saying that higher-ups have something to do with the labour of the peasantry (which... is also true in a broader sense and the wealth's failure to trickle down doesn't change that). --- This is my signature. adjl 10/09/22 10:45:39 PM #105 | [LFAQs-redacted-quote] I'm sorry, the correct answer is "yes, Blizzard did publish Immortal." Better luck next time. However much you want to cling to the fantasy that, because Blizzard outsource Immortal's development to NetEase, it means it doesn't count as a real Blizzard game, Blizzard chose to publish it. Everything that we see as being wrong with Diablo Immortal is something Blizzard not only signed off on, but specifically requested because they knew the potential it held to make them ludicrous amounts of money. Diablo Immortal is the game Blizzard wanted. I don't know if you're grasping at pedantic straws because you don't want to admit that the Blizzard that put out some of your favourite games from the late 90's/early 2000's is dead, but the fact of the matter is that that company is dead. Its management has fully embraced the dystopian capitalist cesspool that is the modern AAA video game industry and its exploitative monetization. The only way they're going to let their developers create a game that isn't designed to manipulate as much extra revenue out of players as possible is if they feel like they need to do so to recover from bad PR that would otherwise hurt their next project's revenue (see: Starcraft and Diablo 2 remakes). That's just the reality of Blizzard in 2022 (and, in truth, has been the reality of Blizzard since ~2010, with the decision to hamstring Diablo 3's loot system so they could cash in on RMT more efficiently). --- This is my signature. I guess Blizzard's just less capable of making online multiplayer games than goddamn Nintendo, because all three iterations of Splatoon have avoided such practices. The cosmetics are how they fund ludicrous executive paycheques and inflate their stock price to make shareholders happy. adjl 10/01/22 1:33:13 PM #12 | Animal Crossing is a bit of a weird case because it came out at the absolute best possible time: In mid-March 2020, lockdowns were ramping up around the world, leaving everyone with a ton of free time, massive disruptions to their regular routines, having to come up with new ways to interact remotely with their friends and family, and a whole lot of fear about what was happening. So when Nintendo released a game on March 20, 2020 that offered plenty of play time, defined routines, new ways to interact remotely with friends and family, and a really relaxed, comforting aesthetic and atmosphere, it absolutely exploded. It's by no means a perfect game and there's plenty of room to improve it, but Animal Crossing was exactly the game the world needed at the time it was released, which paved the way to it becoming a genuine social phenomenon. That said, calling the Switch a "port machine" is pretty silly. Most of the WiiU's notable library has been ported to it and MK8 still dominates monthly sales charts, but it's no more reliant on ports/multiplats than any other system and has plenty of notable exclusives. --- This is my signature. There's no shortage of examples of it being abused to sell as many copies of a half-finished project as possible before scrapping it completely, but it's a very powerful tool that has made games like Minecraft, Factorio, and Hades far greater than they'd be without it. Used properly (that is, by a developer that's committed to gradually improving their product and listening to community feedback), it's a fantastic idea, and I don't really think it's damaged gaming as a whole. Now, the informal "early access" approach of shipping a half-broken game for the sake of meeting deadlines and patching it later? I'd agree that that's damaging. That's not formal early access, though, that's just executives not understanding how to make good games trying to please shareholders who don't care about anything other than meeting deadlines and sales targets (fuelled in part by a customer base that's also not very tolerant of delays). Early access as a development strategy is fundamentally a good thing. --- This is my signature. It exists to keep people from skipping the last line of my posts. |

Everything up to that point is just an extremely generic "rawr we bad give us ur girlfriend" "oh noes don't take my girlfriend" that only qualifies as an excuse to keep playing because they periodically drop hints about more interesting worldbuilding to come later. It's really only after the end of chapter 6 that it starts actually delving into the characters, the world, and the themes of existentialism that underpin it all and make it a really interesting story. It's extremely back-heavy on the exposition and character development (mostly on the villain side of things) that it needs to be engaging, which is probably it's greatest flaw (and, and being a really slow start mechanics-wise as well). YoukaiSlayer posted... Xenoblade 1 was similar but it's jump the shark moment was closer to 50% of the way through ... You mean when the story developed into more than just a straightforward revenge story against the evil robots? I'm starting to think you just don't like stories with villains that have any depth to them. Prison Island was a major turning point for Shulk's character and shifts the story in a way that really elevates it to be something great instead of a pretty straightforward "beat the bad guy" story that you can get from any Mario game. YoukaiSlayer posted... The only xenoblade with a solid ending is X, Okay, what? X doesn't even have an ending. The story stops after what feels more like a midgame boss than a final one (story-wise. Gameplay-wise, it was definitely final boss material), says "wow, this planet sure is mysterious," then rolls the credits without resolving any of the myriad questions that arose throughout the game and in those final cutscenes. It's blatantly half a story, clearly set up for a sequel that has yet to materialize. X very emphatically does not have a good ending. YoukaiSlayer posted...

YoukaiSlayer posted... Additionally, if I play the game and watch everything and pay attention and still didn't understand a mass marketed AAA game, the game f***ed up it's storytelling. I shouldn't need 45 minute breakdowns to understand the story and if you look at other peoples impressions of the story, a lot of people reached very different conclusions on what physically happened. The information was conveyed poorly. Virtually all of the information is there, you just have to pay attention and occasionally read between the lines a bit. People reach different conclusions not because the story is told poorly, but because they don't know how to find the point without having their hands held. A 45-minute breakdown is nothing compared to what's been done to analyze any of the stories that are widely considered to be the best ever written. That doesn't mean they're poorly written. Quite the opposite: It means they're written with depth and subtlety that stands up to deeper analysis and exploration of their themes and context, which in turn means that not everyone is going to fully understand them on the first pass and may need to study it further. While I'm not about to suggest that Xenoblade 3 should be held up as a literary masterpiece, the fact that there's room to explore its story like this after the fact is very much a good thing, not a failure.
