well, i think marketing planned noms (in modest ways, of course, not literal collusion) has always been a vital crutch for vgmc all along, especially now that we're so far distanced from the point where it was possible to just get something in off your own double alone. sharing stuff to put it on other people's radars isn't something i consider a bad thing, when many will avoid giving stuff they haven't already heard even a passing glance

but yeah lock system is rally central lol and truly minimising its effects is what i want to see

lol oops true i was thinking about putting 2 week and 1 day but then changed it to 15 days and messed up (i had to head out immediately after posting so i'm glad i didn't make any more egregious errors). truthfully the main reason i made it 15 was because i was also spinning an idea in my head to also do 1 lock per day in the third phase but that seemed too inconvenient and really it doesn't actually need to be 5 days

thinking about maybe pushing forward a few experimental things next year, if the position is open i might even do it myself but otherwise i'm just going to put this here so i can ideally check archives later on for such a pre-announcement topic

15 nom cap, 3 per day, unlimited supports though and doubles can only be given to supports (and only after the break, max 5 and cannot be dropped so people have to really make them count)

longer "break" period from after day 5 through to about day 10 (may actually allow people to add songs from this point (with daily cap lifted) from here if they haven't used all their nom slots yet and link changes are still allowed, but no drops or supports). not really the same thing as the existing break period that got implemented currently since i'm worried it'll reduce interest if there's just a complete lot of nothing happening for that many days, but should still achieve the intended effect of just giving people sufficient time to simply take note of everything

lock system is replaced with a protection system where every song within the top 16 (first 5 days)/32 (last 5 days) by nomcount (including songs tied with them past that) at the end of each day cannot be dropped by any nominators or supporters. (applies for every day, may only apply to ones at like 3 noms or more so it could be less than 16 on day 1/2)

15 week nom period overall, nom cap lifting still in effect after break for final 5 days

in other words, it'd be a half-month long nom period in 3 key phases for 5 days each
  • first 5 days have max 3 noms per day, unlimited supports, no doubles allowed, and can only drop and replace noms and supports that aren't in the top 16(ish) on the sheet for most noms/supports when tallied at the end of the prior day* (link adjustments can be made at any time though and can also be requested by others)
  • second 5 days have nom caps lifted (still 15 total) so anyone can use the rest of their slots if they didn't already or adjust links, but nobody can support or drop anything. users who nominated at least 1 song with spare slots will be pinged during this time
  • third 5 days still have no limit on noms per day (still 15 total), unlimited supports, doubles allowed only for supports (5 total), nom drop rule from day 1-5 still applies but it's top 32 instead because there will obviously be higher nom and support counts then and also nobody can drop doubles
*i think this is how it is anyway but if the nominator drops it (has to be out of the top 16/32 of course and not during day 6-10) and there's a support left there, will still count as an active nom just without it going toward's the nominator's nomcount (or the supporter's obv, though it would still count towards double support limits in the last 5 days)

maybe lock system could actually exist in this system, just as a fixed "songs in the top (low number) when the break period happens" kind of thing, though i'm still not the biggest fan of doing anything to encourage what i mentioned before

i will admit this is also a rather complicated system compared to the existing one even if i think it reduces stress overall (not having to worry about balancing supports into the total, not having to worry about the impact of the cutoff while still addressing key issues with drops) and i spent extremely little time thinking about it so uhhh WIP?

by the way i uh ended up remembering some other songs of note last week or so when looking into a specific composer's works. so..................... i was reluctant to do it because i said i was already drawing the line where i did before but i want to make an exception for these (it's an ideal point to interject them too since one of the composers i remembered is also up next in the existing list)

i hate the current interpretation of the lock system tbh, the whole point of it was to merely protect songs that were considered """safe""" ie. stuff at the top of the nomcount sheet right off the bat from the inevitable actions of people deciding to drop them for that reason, not for pushing people to support anything they see before they even listen to other noms so it can make the guaranteed in cut in time

if the requirement isn't at least bumped up to a minimum of 8 i'll be mad

UF8

As with the first one a little over a year ago, it's not a very large showcase, and very little of it is actually news, since Yokaze is a particularly minor indie label... but also among my favourites. They're helping push the doujin/smaller Japanese indie game scene in an incredible direction, and the games they've published are by and large also some of my favourites in recent years... and I suppose the coming year too. Of course they're not the only gaming initiative pushing in this way currently, or even arguably the most significant in their own respective scene, but what they've helped create so far is pretty inspirational (functioning both as one of the most finely curated indie labels for some of the most emotional, memorable and beautiful yet nostalgic indie releases lately, and as a collective to make it easier for the devs of them collaborate on projects). Also they picked up MINDHACK this time, so, neat.

I'd like to see more groups work with them, like perhaps Alto-tascal (who recently did Open The Door: A Short Story About Life), Summertime (who are currently working on Silence of Switchblade), Drecom (devs of the upcoming Tokyo Stories), or even Haikyo Dot (the devs of Pixel Ruins which has sadly apparently had development stalled for the last few years, so it'd be nice if they could get some help...) among others. I can think of others I'd have also have liked to have been promoted by them, such as the upcoming releases from Jitensha Sougyou (Anosuba HD), qbert (Retro Game Aliens) or illuCalab (EDEN.schemata) but they're already in good hands with their current publishers, so eh.

it is linear, albeit with bonus missions without plot attached to them. not sure if oncemore adds anything more to that or not (i mean i'm confident they have a bunch more bonus missions at least but not sure if there's anything notable beyond that). they redubbed the game in japanese so like, one might think that maybe they had more cutscenes but the english dub seems unchanged so idk. at the very least there is the whole skill tree stuff that makes it technically a lot more open in terms of progression

also on a separate note i forgot that mindhack (in early access) was also this month so i'm picking that up now

Not a bad track. The instruments are harsh in a way that I'm not particularly into, though I still haven't identified which types of harshness I like or why to have much insight on that end
yeah i think Lemm regularly has issues balancing treble, had a feeling this would be how this one fared

Raetsel_Lapin posted...
He's not the greatest singer, but there's an infectious energy and joy in his performance that makes the song really easy to get into & enjoy. While not my favorite, a burst of pure joy is always worth smiling at & I'd say I liked this--it's another pretty easy addition to the 60 point tier, at least.
honestly i personally think he might've actually been the best singer in the agency he was in (which includes the people in the song above it). shame they terminated the group he was in within a couple of months since they weren't getting enough views

Raetsel_Lapin posted...
It's another song where I'm not quite sure, honestly. The dreamy ambiance is rather nice and... well, I don't know.
not gonna lie i don't blame you, it's not a song i care about either. I really just included it because I was like "oh yeah i should include a song from crim" before realising that was the only one i'd listened to in the last couple of years (and the other one i thought about including had been deleted). it's fine but unremarkable

Raetsel_Lapin posted...
I think it all works out to a song that I kinda like? It does have enough high points that I could see moving it up a tier, but I'm not quite there tonight.
honestly i'm not sure if i'd even rate this one at 5/10, i just posted this purely because it's ideal for comparing genres

ah shoot i knew i was forgetting about some other releases

probably also getting the Dokapon Kingdom remaster and Volcano Princess (nice-looking raising sim hybrid that's been on my radar since the last indie live expo) this month.

also can add all of these to the maybe list:
Passpartout 2
Process of Elimination (i forgot that was releasing at the same time as grimgrimoire)
Rusted Moss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iteSJWwSaAg hook-based metroidvania with a cool art style)
Dance of Cards (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bBQY5lqx0u4 high stakes poker rpg with another neat, more minimalist style reminiscent of mother games imo)
Beyond the Long Night (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqP3JvOCMcw just a nice twin stick roguelike with nice worldbuilding, art (again) and soundtrack. honestly it's kind of like a celeste reskin of isaac)
Arcana of Paradise: The Tower (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VQuYg9sr1Uc that survival rpg (card) roguelike with kids on a tower beating things up for bread or something)
Labyrinth of Zangetsu (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4fJ6DeJxD5w yokai-themed standard dungeon crawler)
Afterimage (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pGlgjV5IvAw just a very nice looking indie metroidvania. devs previously did the gujian series which i guess were pretty popular in china but i don't really know much about them)
Varney Lake (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LkhydDB3Ob4 very retro adventure game probably linked to last year's Mothmen 1966 which i still need to pick up tbh)
and Complex Loop (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlA4kEeF9KM doujin adventure game inspired by Gnosia with a surprisingly legit voice cast which is admittedly already out but coming to steam some time this month)

it's also probably the business that has been ramping up its price the most here (to the point that it's getting uncomfortably close to kfc prices) lately so I'm very reluctant to pick it...

still though i would give it a slight edge, though admittedly partially because i don't feel very strongly about either burger. (i usually get rebel bk chook/tendercrisp (recently removed rip)/jr salad burgers, or filet a fish/big mac/breakfast menu stuff (the bk here is closed till 9 or later...))

i feel like selvaria is being undervalued here considering her main shtick (besides being a speedy ranged combatant who can oneshot large vehicles with beam abuse) is her super high endurance (including healing factor) to the point that she just no-sells all the projectiles thrown at her and immediately recovers from anything that can leave a mark most of the time, and still crushes in damage trades for the rest. As a result I don't think she's really susceptible to even jesse's "sniping" here, and she'd probably damage trade favourably here too against anyone besides Seph

not convinced either way on overall verdict tho

preordered GrimGrimoire OnceMore already and am glad it made the poll. the original would've probably still been in my top 10 games ever, but since trying the demo out I'm not sure if i can even go back. It still has plenty of quirks present that still define its identity but the qol improvements are huge and game-changing, and all for the better. my flatmate's been playing hogwarts legacy for a dangerous amount of hours lately but despite his glowing endorsement, I can safely say that this will be the harry potter-esque game i'll be throwing all my time at this year (even if i have to go through it once more, and once more again...)

still haven't preordered Anosuba HD (which got delayed from march to the 20th of next month) but 100% will by the time it launches. I want the limited edition asap

Genshin killer Honkai 4 is also on my radar because sure

i forget if there was anything else i was waiting for that much really. mmbn collection and AW1+2 hd are nice, as is fairy fencer f 2's release i guess, but i won't be picking any of them up any time soon. i guess super alloy ranger exiting early access is something? oh yeah, i also opted to wait until melon journey 2's nz release on switch, which is also in april lol

speaking of games i mentioned this month btw, besides paranormasight, ghostpia also dropped last week... but only on the japanese eshop (it's already fully translated though), and i think it's also probably locked into my top 10 games for the year for sure. it may just be a port of an existing game, and a browser-based VN at that, but it's also one of the most ambitious ports i've seen for an obviously indie work, with everything being reanimated and adding so many extra features and scenes to the point that it only barely doesn't quite count as a full on remake

anyway that's maybe getting a global release (and steam version) next month (there isn't a set date besides "Q2" now but considering it's already like, out in multiple languages and the only cause of the delay is PQube picking it up at basically the last minute, I'd like to assume it will be april...). i wanted to do a standalone shill topic for it like i did with paranormasight but nobody's been reviewing it due to the current limited release sadly, so this post will have to suffice instead lol

heck there were more games i was missing dlc on than i thought (i forgot about 7th dragon vfd) and it also costs more than i was prepared for (i also forgot how much echoes dlc there was lol)

unfortunate that this means i def won't be getting many other games, since the discounts are pretty nice (at least on 3ds anyway, wii u got kinda screwed over here). psa go get all 3 parascientific escape games since they're never getting ports and they're all pretty much $1

it's within the realm of possibility that i'll actually finish more than 10% of the shows i start this season for the first time in a while, shame it's mostly isekais (somehow at 8+ eps done on 16 shows and haven't dropped 5 others)

took a peek at next season and am surprised there's actually two vtuber anime next season. honestly the non-kizuna one definitely caught my attention largely because i'm not really sure how it happened. shishigami leona (a single member of re:act) and 4 indie vtubers totally unassociated with that company who i've seen before and know generally don't get 100 viewers on average (one i think barely averages 10). really not sure how an anime pitch could've happened let alone gone ahead even if it's a short series

besides that guess i'll have a look at the alice gear aegis thing, magus 2, megumin, the band one, the insomnia thing and tengoku whatever... and whatever else seems decent when the season starts

i guess i should get some of that dlc myself, pretty sure i haven't gotten any sov or soj or smt4 stuff presently (oops) and i guess i need to finally decide if i want to get ace combat 3D+ or not assuming that's still there...

also i guess i might as well grab whatever wii u indie stuff i had in my wishlist still that's not cheaper/improved on switch too

probably should've done it sooner but i was busy being distracted by cool new game releases (tbh i've probably spent more time on switch this month than ever before thanks to paranormasight and the grimgrimoire demo as well as my flatmate just being free all month.. also i'll def be playing ghostpia this week too) as well as steam wishlist stuff during the sale

Even if they don't serve much purpose, I love finding the Mockingbirds. It's a fun concept that makes me smile. I mean, Illegal Eagle? That's good shit.
yknow what fair, i just wish i didn't have to spend as long as i did on them (including a solid 15ish mins trying to get the "jackpot" one to the point that i was pretty much convinced i was wrong about where it was) only for there to be no other reward (at least on switch with no cheevos) for collecting all of them

i hope in the sequel (if it happens) that they play a bigger role somehow

i think 8 and 8 deluxe can be treated as separate games now yeah. obviously this doesn't apply to most wii u ports but here surely, deluxe has more mktour dna in it than actual 8 at this point...

QP Shooting - Dangerous!!
Xmas Shooting - Scramble!!
Ace Combat: Assault Horizon Legacy
RADICAL DREAMERS -Le Tresor Interdit- (i... think this counts for this gen too? i'm not sure if it has an xsx/xss version or not or it being in the chrono cross compilation thing makes it ineligible)
GENSOU Skydrift (i hope crossplatform in the sense of "switch/pc before 2020" is safe. at the very least, it was also on pc before the steam/switch release anyway, just japan-only...)

Rabi-Ribi
Paper Mario: Color Splash
Umineko no Naku Koro ni Saku on PC only???*
Hagane Orchestra (... do mobile games count?)
200% Mixed Juice
GNOSIA
Hypnospace Outlaw
Return of the Obra Dinn
Umineko: Golden Fantasia
Utawarerumono: Prelude to the Fallen
Utawarerumono: Mask of Deception
Utawarerumono: Mask of Truth
Shadowverse
Senko no Ronde 2
Acceleration of SUGURI 2

*(jeez the switch rule makes this one a real mess to determine the valid gen. i'd have liked to pick the console version but that's a crossgen release and also not different enough compared to this one to qualify... I at least think this is safe to nom despite the compilation rule because of its extra arcs??? strictly speaking higurashi hou is also valid (i think? considering the english releases were all split by arc it may not actually count as 1 entry...) but its console version had about 10 more arcs than the pc one so they're not really the same at all, and that was outright on switch before ps4, so...)

came in to vote for the cancelled team rocket vs team plasma arc tbh

can honestly point to its removal leading to the decline of the series as a whole :|

if it did require shaking it would've probably worked fine. No, there's a point where you have to move the right analog stick to shake your head and it just doesn't work properly for whatever reason. Was stuck there for about 20 mins lol

Sometimes, yeah. Turned out that it was more investigation-focused than I thought, though investigating the areas themselves certainly seemed to remain a non-priority for a vast majority of it other than for the misc collectables that I... don't think had any purpose? I expected some trivia or something for collecting them all but I guess not? For the best I guess since scanning each area extensively for them in every chapter was pretty tedious given the lack of other things to check most of the time

Finally finished it off myself now (all endings) though and didn't have much trouble getting conditions right smoothly. The only difficulty I really had past the prologue portion, and this is a bit ironic after what I said before, was just an issue in getting a single gesture to register properly one time in the game (i guess the switch version really was flawed after all...)

(okay that's a lie i did also trip up on the final puzzles a bit)

Still consider it solid enough though and really hope it can become a series quickly.
