I cant find the news story, but I remember an investigative reporter did that. They sent away with false answers on the survey and the results matched the false answers.

What's a good starting point for this series?

ellis123 explained it really well, so Ill just add to it. Each trilogy is a self contained story, so you dont have worry about what came before. While it isnt extremely important to start with the first game in a trilogy since barring the Secret trilogy and the 2 Sophie games in Mysterious all of them have a different protagonist with their own goals in each game, its still recommended since most of the story for each character is in the game they debuted in.

As for which trilogy to start with, Im torn between Arland and Dusk. On the one hand, for me at least, Dusk is the peak of the series, but Arland might be hard to go back to due to it having less QoL improvements. On the other hand, starting with Arland avoids that but they might be rough enough to turn someone off the games since theres been 13 years worth of improvements since then. Of the main series, Iris and Man Khemia are the easiest to go back to later since they play more like normal PS2 JRPGs.

As for spin-offs (which no one asked about, but Ill include for completeness sake) the only 2 released in English are Annie and Nelke. Annie is similar to the original the original 2 series which never came out in English (until the remake of the very first game Marie comes out later this year). It was okay. I dont really remember much about it. Nelke is a town sim that works best after having played all the other pre-Secret main titles since it has characters from all of them. It wasnt really my cup of tea. I had to set up spreadsheets for it lol.

Most of the DLC is just outfits that, barring Firis, have no effect on the game. I just buy the occasional swimsuit for a busty character and ignore the rest of the outfits.

Which one is the first game? I have no idea how this franchise works.

This is going to be more info than you care about, but here goes. The series is divided into a bunch of trilogies (though 2 only have 2 games and 2 now have 4) that arent connect to each other.

Salburg (Marie, Elie, Lilie) Originally only in Japan. Marie remake coming in English in July. If it does well we might get the other 2.

Gramnad (Judie, Viorate) Only in Japan.

Iris (Iris 1, 2, 3) First ones in English. Play more like standard jrpgs. Iris 3 isnt connect to the other 2 story wise.

Mana Khemia (MK1, 2) standard jrpgs again. Set in a school.

Arland (Rorona, Totori, Meruru, Lulua). Start of the modern games. A little rough mechanic-wise. Some questionable localization decisions. Lulua was released after Ryza, so its closer to the current games in mechanics than it is to the rest of Arland.

Dusk (Ayesha, Escha & Logy, Shellie) most story based trilogy.

Mysterious ( Sophie, Sophie 2, Firis, Lydie & Suelle) Thats the order story wise, but Sophie 2 came out after the others. Firis was an experiment in more open world.

Secret (Ryza 1, 2, 3) Real-time combat and lean heavily on fanservice.

Nelke is a spin-off that has characters from all the pre-Ryza games.

Arland is a good enough place to start, but they may be showing their age. Dusk and Mysterious are better and Ryza is worse imo.

Id say Ryza 2 has more than Ryza 1. In 2 you can see her bra when it rains and there are crawling sections that focus on her ass or down her top.

You can start at the first game in any trilogy since each set are self contained stories. I say trilogy because Gramnad (not released in English) and Mana Khemia are duologies, and Arland and Mysterious now have fourth games.

The key to that fight is you gotta get each enemy down to red without killing them.

Then when everyone is in red, take them all out before they can regenerate.

Thats what I figure was supposed to happen, but what was happening is theyd just regenerate anyway.
