Even putting aside how often the actual work ends up significantly exceeding the job description you were given upon starting (whether because you end up picking up others' slack, you get extra duties because your manager thinks you can handle them, or the job description just wasn't written well), taking a job like Walmart is very rarely a matter of "I've decided this job and wage are worth my effort and dedication." It's much more commonly a matter of "I need money and this is the best/only opportunity I've got right now, so I'll put up with it while I work toward something better." They're not an employer that particularly cares about or tries to earn employees' respect, so why should employees respect them?

lolwut? You've generally described working in general. Unless you're running a company, 90% of the time it's the best for now because most people always want more (unless they're living on the dole or something), either from that company or finding a different company. However, even when I worked for fucking terrible companies, I still tried to do my best because there are guys like me who give a shit and people who'll always just try to coast by. And the people who give a shit tend to have much better outcomes than those who don't.

And unfortunately, the USA -- from the government to entertainment -- has villainized the idea of hard work, which part of the reason why the US has been slipping. Within the next hundred years, I fully expect the US will be overtaken by any of the nations that value hard work.

Most retailers are horrible places to work, but they're still better than most food service places. And, honestly, at least those jobs can keep you busy. Boring jobs are what really sucks.

The worst job from a satisfaction perspective has to be retail sales since you can go a day without seeing a customer where you effectively came in for nothing because that empty day counts against your draw -- basically, it's a vacation day that you worked. Oh, and by the way, most retail sales jobs *don't* have actual vacation days either because you're in the hole for the commission for that day anyway. Retail sales combines the the worst aspects of retail and sales. Doubly so because the jobs often require uncompensated work and you frequently work 6-7 days a week if you're just doing retail sales. Personally, when I've done retail sales, I've usually worked a normal white collar job on weekdays (40-50 hours) and then did the sales stuff on Saturday/Sundays when the stores were busier anyway. There were weekends where I'd clear $1.5k and that was ON TOP of what I was earning from my normal weekday job. However, the few times I'd just done retail sales, it was fucking garbage because weekdays were the shit since I'd see 0-2 customers and my weekday take generally wasn't worth the time. But, beyond that, even if you work the lowliest normal retail job, you work a day, you get paid for a day. Retail sales you effectively don't get paid unless you sell for that day (since it counts against you)

However, if I was going to rank my favorite starters (minus gen 9)....

#1 - Bulbasaur
#2 - Rowlett
#3 - Torchic and Mudkip (tie)
#5 (since #3 is a tie) - Charmander
#6 - Squirtle
#7 - Chimchar

After that, maybe it's one of the other gen 7s or Treecko, but the preference isn't as strong.

Granted, I've used different starters in the same generation at times, but... maybe it'll be easier by generation.

Gen 1 -- Usually Bulbasaur, followed by Charmander or Squirtle

So maybe 1 pt for grass, half a pt for water and fire

Gen 2 -- Crapshoot. I don't particularly like any of them. Although I used Chikorita on my initial play, I always struggle picking again.

And, as a result, I'll say 0 points (and may god have mercy on gen 2's soul)

Gen 3 -- Usually Torchic or Mudkip. I prefer Torchic, but the two are very close. Although I'm kinda okay with Treecko, he's not up there.

1 pt for fire and water, half for grass

Gen 4 -- Usually Chimchar because I like Infernape's design and Turtwig has typing problems later on, although I've sometimes used Turtwig. Piplup I rarely used, which is ironic since I like Empeleon in the spinoffs (Pokken, PG, etc)

1 pt for fire, half for grass, none for water

Gen 5 -- Junk starter gen. I usually go with Tepig, but none of them amaze me. I'm not sure I ever used Osha

1 pt for fire, half for grass, none for water

Gen 6 -- Went with Fennik originally. I might've tried Froakie with one. Wasn't really interested in Chespin

1 pt for fire, half for water, 0 for grass

Gen 7 -- The second Rowlett was announced, I knew I was going with him... and iirc even replays I've mostly picked him. Probably my second fave starter after Bulbasaur (although Torchic and Mudkip rank up there, too).

1 pt for grass, half pt for the others

Gen 8 -- I went with the water guy, but I should've picked the grass guy. The fire one looks stupid.

1 pt for water and grass, 0 for fire

Gen 9 -- Haven't played, so I won't count it. However, I'm definitely going grass with fire as a second choice. iirc, the water one doesn't thrill me

So that works out to...

Grass - 4.5
Fire - 5
Water - 3.5

So fire just a bit ahead of grass, then water lags a bit behind. I kinda thought fire was in the lead these days and it basically is, although counting gen 9 it'd work out the same grass vs fire.

It looks like he does appear on the show as a guest role, he just is not a constant presence. But yeah, unless Topher has basically retired from acting him turning down a potential main role is beyond me. It's not like he is getting a ton of other work or something, crap the most successful former cast member was Ashton Kutcher and even he hasn't done a ton lately.

...wtf? Topher literally has a network TV show atm. Maybe I can understand you not hearing about it since it's only on its third season and it's in a heavily advertised prime-time slot, but you could've looked up what he's been doing.

As for Kutcher, apparently he's going to be on That 90's Show. However, he's loaded and has gradually slowed down from acting, presumably by choice because he was still making a fortune.

teddy241 posted...
Im surprised how diversed the cast is. I think just 2 of the 6 kids are actually white. Is this fair representation for todays demographics? I remember growing up whites were like 70% of the american population so youd get a show like this and have one maybe 2 minorities in. Now its whites are around 50% at best?

No, they tend to overrepresent minorities on a lot of (if not most) shows nowadays. It's been a pretty consistent thing for a while, probably an overcorrection from when representing the actual number meant it was a rarity.

Count_Drachma
12/07/22 12:15:11 AM

From what I remember of his stance on women in war, it makes sense. He basically argued that a large, strong woman would outperform a smaller, weaker man, but those were the exceptions rather than the rule. And, at the time, physical strength meant more. However, if one side had men and women fighting, it'd make sense for the other side to bolster their numbers in the same way.

As for nunchucks, a lot of people have claimed they aren't a good weapon and demonstrated the issues. However, the fact they weren't widely used in warfare comes down more to their short range than anything else. Spears and other polearms were traditionally the kings of the battlefield, and then there were a lot of other weapons with a shorter reach which were still longer than the range you'd get from nunchucks.

A lot of Shad's speculative fantasy stuff has sounded kinda bunko at times.

Honestly, at this point they'd be better off recasting Indy so they can go back and do stories in the 30s (or earlier, like the Young Indy series did). Sure, people would complain that it's not Harrison Ford (see also Solo), but the alternative is that people are going to complain about how old he is and how bad the movie is, so it's pretty much a no-win scenario regardless.

Maybe they can finally do that after this film. It was stupid anyway that the franchise was basically fallow so many years.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
If Hollywood wasn't so obsessed with cannibalizing and corpse-fucking every successful franchise of the past, I'd say they'd almost be better off letting the brand name die entirely and just tell similar stories with different characters (I may be one of like 3 people on Earth who would have been absolutely fine if they'd eventually segued to Mutt being the new lead, but I mean more along the lines of how Tomb Raider and Uncharted are basically channeling the spirit of Indy without having to explicitly BE Indy).

If they had picked a better choice for Mutt -- and done something less on the nose than "Mutt" -- that might've been a good plan. However, they dropped the ball in every regard.

ParanoidObsessive posted...
That's the entire point of trailers. To manipulate scenes in ways that make even shit movies look good.

Was pretty hyped when I saw there was a trailer for GoG... and then was pretty not-hyped after watching it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=u3V5KDHRQvk

The trailer was just hijinks where I couldn't even figure out who the villain was supposed to be (apparently it's The High Evolutionary, which is... eh, okay).

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZfVYgWYaHmE

As for Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny, it leaves me with a melancholy feeling since iirc this is supposed to be his last and the franchise might be retired (if Ford has his way). However, the trailer LOOKS great, whereas the Crystal Skull one looked kinda shit and the movie was fairly shit (although I hate it less now, I guess).

Then again, I might be interested because this could be a much nicer ending to the franchise than Crystal Skull.

Is that whole chip shortage still a major factor? Or is it more that that pandemic-era (or post-pandemic-era) has seen retailers not carry as much inventory and (partly as a result) not discount as heavily?

At this point, I'm leaning towards skipping buying a new laptop for another year. Other than the keyboard on one being shot, it mostly works fine (although it's underpowered). And it's possible that the one that had all sorts of problems (where I think a fan might've been busted?) is possibly starting to work after I left it alone for over a year or two.

I don't really have any hobbies.

Uh, get some?

You could always take up woodworking.

I have taken some interest in philology and grammar studies as of late.

I mean, leaning when to break up a paragraph would certainly help.

Anyway, how was your Saturday, board?

Kinda lame, but I'm not a big weekend person these days.

Still figuring out if there's anything I want to get during the sales this weekend (despite the great deals being done) and I'm still trying to figure out a laptop to go with.

And because if it looks good on you, you just know you'll never be able to buy another one if you don't buy it right now.

The other issue is mass retail apparel can be notoriously unreliable in terms of consistency, between dye lots, manufacturing facilities, and human involvement. You could have three pairs of pants of the same brand, style, etc, where each fits slightly differently depending on when and where they were originally manufactured (and sometimes even within lots from the same factory)

However, it's a lot cheaper than getting everything individually tailored, unless you're visiting nations with less expensive labor (China being one example). Of course, the thing about individual tailoring is you then have to worry about keeping your body type as consistent as possible where gaining or losing a few pounds would mean needing to make adjustments to your entire wardrobe.

Why didn't you just ask the homeowners what they usually do? That couldn't have been the first time it happened and they probably had an easy fix. You don't have a design like that without it happening occasionally.

I wouldn't knowingly support that murderer

Literally the clearest case of self-defense ever, considering you had ON CAMERA an army of grown-ass men chasing and attacking a teenager, including one who was going to shoot him and only got stopped by being shot.

Boston is notoriously racist so I'm not sure how the racism only exists in the south thing even started

Because since the inception of America, Northerners have hated Southerners. It's one reason why it might've made more sense if the US was truly broken into two separate countries... and it would certainly limit the US's impact on the world.

I'm on the tall side so I have to buy at big and tall stores. There is a VERY limited option of shirts for me.

That being said whenever I find a shirt I like I buy 5-10 of them. Got so bad a dude at work once straight up asked me if I only had two shirts.

While I don't have that exact issue, I also try to buy multiples of whatever I like just for convenience and because not everything is comfortable.
