What happened briefly before hand?Basically Osvald, the scholar, is framed for a crime which was actually committed by his colleague, Harvey. They were studying "The one true magic" and out of nowhere, Harvey burned down Osvald's house with his wife and daughter inside. Osvald is then imprisoned for 5 years, which is when his story starts. After a couple of chapters you catch up to Harvey. He unleashes a monster on you that was made from the blood of Osvald's wife, it can speak with her voice (in the cut scene it's heard calling out to Osvald, saying "my dear"). After you fight it, he realizes that this was not actually his wife but as mentioned, just made with her blood. He then asks what Harvey did to his daughter. He says "What do you think?" in a moment, you hear a girl off screen say "papa?" and in comes Osvald's daughter. Osvald shows any sort of relief for the first time in the game and opens up his arms and says "come here" and the daughter walks past him into the arms of Harvey instead, asking who Osvald is. The two depart and Harvey tells you that he used his magic to rewire her memories into believing Harvey is her father, and then claims his next trial of making the monster with Osvald's daughter instead of the mother will be more successful.
