Whos the mercs character?
Barry Burton.
In RE5 mercs reunion, critically acclaimed enemy of the people Barry Burton is turned loose once again.

See Josh's 3 lines are all self-praise. Barry's are "C'mon c'mon!" "Here's Barry!" and "What's the matter, out of ammo?!"
While Josh is exceedingly proud of any activity he does, Barry is just going around yelling random insane things that might have no bearing on what he's presently doing.

-"C'mon c'mon!" might seem like the boring one, but it does make him sound like Terry Bogard after a while. It can also be a way of beckoning enemies over. It could be something he says out of frustration. He might also be talking to the ammo he is presently picking up, telling it to get in his inventory.

-"Here's Barry!" is absolutely perfect for making jumps. You know how the RE4/5 jump looks right, no wind up, they just spring across a small gap as soon as you hit the button? Barry can announce when he is moving from one location to another. If you're playing co-op and you locate the other player who is also playing as Barry, you can use this line to have your Barry announce that he has found his time clone.

-"What's the matter, out of ammo?" is the no contest best one. You don't even need to cancel it, you can make Barry walk up a feral dog, in a cave, underground, in Africa and tauntingly ask if it's run out of ammo. The same goes for plagas, bat monsters, armed enemies that clearly haven't run out of ammo and the chicken that spawns on each map. He's also the only character that can taunt himself and you, the player by saying the line while picking up ammo like he's mocking himself and you for having run out.

-A lot of the time Barry will just come across as insane, asking if you're out of ammo while climbing a ladder with no enemies around. This is good. The complete lack of rationality fits the whole extemporaneous mass bloodshed thing mercs already had going on.

-Barry actually has something unique to him. While placing a landmine he will often do the "I have THIS!" or "What IS this?!" lines. No other character is set to deliberately yell dumb things while placing mines. This is the absolute closest RE5 gets to winking at the camera.

Wesker, Rebecca and Josh are all pretty over the top but Barry is in a league of his own.

Played Desperate Escape.
I like this one. It's all gameplay and it doesn't waste your time. Unless you count having to start out with a basic pistol and a machine gun as time wasting then ah well.
It's more difficult than the main game and I like that because it makes Josh and Jill look good by beating it.

The first bit always felt like it was begging to be speedrun to me, since there's a lot of turrets that shoot explosives. If you move fast enough and put enough space between you and the enemies, you can get to the turret while they're still in its firing range. It can be finished pretty quickly but it has a bunch of specious looking routes for first timers to mistakenly commit to.

The roof is really cool. It's like an all bets are off mercs round. You just gotta survive. You survive while it pours in Majini, Majini with weapons and firebombs and crossbows, Chainsaw guys, Gatling gun guys, Reapers, even the big red axe guy from mercs shows up.
At the end the Agitator Majini, the dude with the megaphone and the shades show up too. I have a thing I like to do when I play co-op with first timers. When we see him in 1-1 I tell them he's the final boss, let them do their courtesy laugh and brush it off, then eventually we get to the very end of Desperate Escape and I am proven right.

The most important feature of Desperate Escape is that you get to play as Josh. Josh has access to the fully realised version of the greatest technique in all of Resident Evil 5. The taunt cancel. Technically everyone can do this, but only 4 characters' taunts immediately play voice lines as soon as you activate them. This means you can taunt to emit a voice line and then immediately perform another action. Picking up ammo, open a door a climb a ladder and more while your character yells one of up to three lines.
Josh alternates between "I am a legend!" "Yeah, who is the man!?" and "That's what I'm talkin' about!" meaning playing as Josh and taunting to play lines over every interaction turns his gameplay into an endless string of positive reinforcement. You can even go up to one of those doors you have to mash B to open, taunt and then hit B twice to have Josh simultaneously praise himself and order Jill to come to the door.

You are probably thinking this is by far the most powerful and glorious character in the entire game. You would have made a respectable estimate, but there is one character sealed away in Mercenaries Reunion whose ability to constantly yell stupid things while performing small tasks exceeds even Josh's.
Oh and Josh can do a suplex. The game calls it a suplex even though it looks more like a botched back drop but it gets results.
It might have been fun if this mode had a NG+ power trip option.

Played Lost In Nightmares.
It went about as I expected. You really only get a few good plays of this. The first part is pretty much a jogging simulator. No combat, open some doors, collect some paper, get a crank, accumulate some guns you probably won't use if you're familiar with it. A dark omen of what was to come indeed.
It's a horror game, so it's less about playing a video game and more about one-time novelties.

I do like the Guardians of Insanity though. They're like if the axe guy wasn't messing around. I also like that they didn't go the generic writhing pile of who-knows-what for their sewer monster design.
These guys are disproportionately strong humanoids wearing hoods and dragging big anchors around. If the axe guy grabs you, you can break free with the control stick or be saved by your partner. If one of these guys grab you, either your partner gets there to save you in time or you die on the spot.
I like how the song that plays when one sees you keeps replaying the initial scare chord too. If you're new it can trick you into thinking there's another one that's also seen you. Kind of a shame this guy's quarantined off in this game mode, but maybe they didn't want him becoming too familiar.

The sewer section's kind of cool the first couple of times. It's the only part of the game where they completely disarm you save for a few grenades lying around and your knife. (Which sucks in this game compared to 6 and especially 4.)
You find cranks, put them in colored openings, one player raises the trap and the other finds a Guardian and lures it in. There's 4 total and once that's done you get to open a gate to a ladder that seemingly goes all the way to Spencer's room.

Wesker's the boss at the end and he only has two lines in this. You get an "Ignorant cretins!" and an "Are you trying to make me angry?" but this is set in the past, before he ascended from outraged to outrageous. Maybe Wesker was tired after his gruelling battle with Spencer and couldn't think of anything bedazzling to do for Roidfield and Jill? They gave him some new moves at least.

There's not a lot of ways to spice it up but they do have some fun with it on the higher difficulties. They put Guardians in the first mansion part, that's the best one considering it initially had no enemies. In the sewer at the end the Guardians no longer show up on the map.

-Before the fight he goes "I'll just have to kill you quickly." he then does the following.
-He often starts the fight by firing two pistol shots and then letting Roidfield and Sheva run away.
-If you stand on the other side of the mesh gate near the start, it counts as a wall, he won't know where you are even though you can see each other through it.
-If you turn off the lights, he'll still refuse to take off his shades and have absolutely no idea where you are.
-If he doesn't know where you are, he'll announce his own position by giving a speech about his motivations.
-If he really doesn't know where you are, he'll start picking up and throwing missiles twice the size he is, regardless of any dangers to his own plan.
-He'll make a vertical leap in seconds. If you really provoke him he'll sprint toward you. The rest of the time? He is passive.
-"IS THAT ALL YOU HAAAVE?"
-He often does a jumping roundhouse that ends with him landing facing away from the protags and then standing still for a moment. Even though the 2 vs 2 in 5-3 revealed this to be a weakness.
-Sometimes he'll do that jumping kick 3 or 4 times back to back while you're 10 feet away from him. Might be some kind of dance.
-Waits for Roidfield to finish saying "Oh great, I think I feel more crazy talk coming on." before continuing his monologue.
-Because the objective is to inject him with something, a way you can have fun with it is to pretend he's a really hardcore anti-vaxxer who after being injected, starts having a breakdown because he thinks he's becoming magnetic.
-"THIS ISN'T OVER CHRIS" (runs away)
-Winds of Madness is incredible
-Pretty much everything he says on the bomber. "I don't need anyone else, I have URoBORos.", complete global saturation
-After the airlock is opened, the way he bounces of the floor and hits the beam is pretty funny.
-"I'm taking the two of you with me!" Oh hey I've found an instance of him acknowledging Sheva!
-He falls out of the rapidly descending bomber and lands in an actual volcano, only casualty of the fall being the top half of his outfit minus the gloves which are in perfect condition.
-If you give him any opportunity to make stupid grunting noises for any action he performs, he will leap at the chance. He just loves his exertions to be audible.
-"I should have killed you years ago... chrriiss...."
"WHY can't you understand, Chris?" - Man who just infected himself with Uroboros, now swinging his giant mutant arm aggressively in a volcano.
-When he's swinging his arm back and forth, get hit by it at least once if you're playing as Roidfield. It's an insta-kill but the mix of the animation and sound Roidfield makes are the best.
-There's a secret alternate route that leads to a valuable treasure. I like the idea that Roidfield was easily distracted from the climactic battle with his mortal enemy by something shiny.
-Even though you are meant to be fleeing Wesker, if you get the treasure, you can use the invincible jump animation to casually pass by him.
-Roidfield actually destroys a few rocks in this fight. First a rocky bridge gives way under him. To get to the previously mentioned treasure you have to shoot and collapse a rock formation near the start. There is another rock formation near Sheva's section of the map that Chris is free to shoot from afar and destroy. Chris repeatedly shoves and punches a boulder and launches it into the lava.
-Wesker has moved on from explaining his personal motives to Roidfield, he is now trying to give a basic explanation of survival of the fittest as if he believe Roidfield literally does not understand him.
-The following sequence takes place. After enough damage, Wesker will scream out in pain, a second Uroboros arm will form, he then chuckles to himself, after that he uses his arm to polevault all the way over to Sheva, finally he emits a slightly peeved "Damn you."
-Roidfield says "And you're going to judge us? Do you get all your ideas from comic book villains?" a year or two later MVC3 is announced in which Wesker is teaming up with Dr Doom and Dormammu. I like this one a lot.
-"CHRRIISSS!!!!"
-He has a big crazy hurricane attack.
-"I can't lose! Not to you!" he says not while on the ropes or while trying harder than before, but while using a move he did earlier.
-Deep Ambition is great in its own right.
-After he falls in the lava, he presumably just stays there for a moment, watching Roidfield and Sheva climb the ladder to the helicopter with his fingers crossed that they'll fall off, before seeing them succeed and proceeding to yell.
-"CHRRRRIIIIIIIIIIIISSSSSS!!!!!!!!"
-It might be the sound of two rockets speeding toward him, it might be him yelling, it's kinda hard to tell what exactly the sound right before the explosion it.
-The end is basically Roidfield thinking "Yeah that was pretty good actually." to himself.

Really short level.
I don't know if this was some kind of carefully planned joke by Wesker but his Italian partner ends up as a giant spaghetti monster. I don't hate the QTE but I wish it had some funnier animations if you fail it. This thing probably has the strength to launch Roidfield and Sheva into orbit, doesn't it?

There's a really short indoor section where you grab a keycard, There's Uroboros appendages blocking the way and while there's a path around, you can just destroy them. Makes the level really short.
I had to do the fight the normal way with the satellite gun, it's the MVC3 LV3 super. The noise this thing makes when you finish it always sounded like a cheering crowd in a big stadium to me.

When they stowed away on Wesker's cruiser at the end of 5-3, it was evening. When the level starts it looks like it's the middle of the night. Did they decide it'd be better since he wouldn't be able to call for more Majini as easily?
I didn't feel like doing the cage/crane part so I took out the Majini who drops the cage.
Dogs do shockingly little damage on professional. I suppose it's only fair since they're fast and you can't really stagger or melee them. Everything else hits like a car with a small turret attached.

Gatling Majini doesn't have enough stage presence in my book. I forgive Chainsaw Majini because while Dr Salvador was cooler, had a name and did it first, Chainsaw Majini did bring the fake death trick to the table and he can also do the Super Salvador thing where he runs forward while swinging (Which was confined to Waterworld outside of the main game in 4)
Gatling Majini though, he shows up really late, barely gets an introduction. Meanwhile in 4, JJ's treated like something to worry about. He shows up early in the island, has a bunch of other enemies advancing on you while he covers.
I do like that the Gatling Majini lets you perform a finisher if you stun him though. Roidfield's backhand and haymaker are what this game is all about. He lost a partner in a fight, but don't worry babe he'll be cool.

In the cutscene after 6-1 they show the legend himself Wesker, talking to some TV monitors. He remembers Spencer telling him about some Wesker clones. Wesker gives him a light punch in the stomach and goes to look out the window. His methods seem unwieldy and unhinged at times.

What's important however is that these Wesker clones present a great opportunity to put the surname Wesker on the end of some extremely cool first names. I believe they've already squandered one opportunity by naming one something as mundane as Alex Wesker though. This is a shame because Capcom are unlikely to see the error of their ways before the window of opportunity closes.

5-3 down.
This if not 6-3 is the level I've replayed most.
It's got Majini with guns, Reapers, the local fat guy, Majini with rocket launchers and shields, a big spinning platform thing, the Licker room and Wesker.

The Wesker/Jill boss fight used to destroy me on pro difficulty but there are strats. Rule 1 is when Wesker says "Your future hinges upon this fight." and then kicks a door off its hinges, you must not pause to chuckle and emote because he is a boss enemy and will continue to attack you.

It wasn't the safest idea for professional difficulty but I couldn't resist leading Wesker around and listening to his "YOU CAN'T HIIDE FOREVA" and "AAAAAH THEEERE YOU ARE." and all the
I did end the fight by inflicting enough damage to him, but it could have been faster. "POOR PERFORMANCE INDEED."
Wesker is a frontrunner for the prestigious "most quotable fuckin' dude ever I swear" award.
Hell, I even like the dumb nasally "NGYES" he gives when he takes a call.
The "NICE MOVE, CHRIS" is funny because he doesn't inflect at all. If he was being sincere he'd probably say it the exact same way. It's also nice to see a taunt from Wesker. You usually get a lot of self-assured enthusiasm and yelling and a lot of speeches so it feels special when he throws something blunt like that in. He's come a long way from "Chris? S-stop it."

In the cutscene before the Jill fight, Jill calls Roidfield Chris before Wesker's left the room. I couldn't help but think that's really a stroke of bad luck. If she'd waited a few more seconds to snap out of it, Wesker wouldn't have known to press the button that specifically makes her almost take her shirt off then do kung fu.
For the actual fight I admit I did the safe approach. If I'm not allowed to kill Jill then she's not allowed to kill me. End of.
I spam the entreat button, Sheva grabs her eventually, shot to the literal glowing weak point, take down because why not, let her get up, get a few more shots in then only pull the weak point off while Sheva's holding her because that way the QTE is the AI's problem.

This is a very serious story so far and I'm gripped by the emotional turmoil the different characters are entangled in. Hopefully the narrative will continue to excel at delivering an emotive experience.

-Professional difficulty
-Playing as Roidfield
-Roidfield will be wearing the default BSAA outfit. This is the Resident Evil 5 outfit. The truest form of Roidfield. No rules for weapons, anything goes. Shin Roidfield can be impeded but not stopped. "GET READY" (Roidfield's warrior outfit explodes off of him Urien style, somehow revealing the default costume) "TO DIE."
-Sheva will be wearing the fairy tale outfit. If you've played this game you might have noticed Wesker does not acknowledge Sheva at all. For this last stretch of the game Sheva might as well be imaginary. Perhaps she wasn't real, perhaps Roidfield made her up. After 5 she's never heard from again, but after 6 Roidfield is never heard from again either. Did she briefly return and take Roidfield somewhere? Hard to say. No rules for weapons. Longbows, handcannons, infinite launchers, 25 landmines and an egg, very little is beyond the abilities of Roidfield's hallucinations.

The enemies have guns now. Some people really don't like this. I don't mind as long as there's enough you can do to circumvent it.
Whenever I play solo mode, this is the level that makes me wish I had a partner the most. Watching the AI squirm on those conveyor belts and being unable to understand what
Unfortunately this game is pretty deserted. I have spent a while sitting in mercs lobbies, thinking about the F2P games raking in the players through any strategy but gameplay meanwhile literal RE5 co-op mercs is out here starving for players. It doesn't help that the playerbase is divided up over two generations worth of consoles at this point. It's a shame.
I sound like I'm saying the level is terrible with the AI don't I? It's not that bad. It just gets you in a what-could-have-been kind of mood.

Speaking of things people probably hate, 5-2 also has the first Reaper in it. These things can't do the grab if your back's to them so that exists as an emergency option, a flash grenade will stagger them, there's a trick where you get them to walk on a landmine and shoot them once. I still don't exactly know what I'm aiming for with a regular gun though.

The boss is the flamethrower Uroboros that apparently doesn't work in some of the ports. Well I bought a lot of landmines. AI Roidfield picking them up after a while was kind of amusing but it didn't help.

It's a lab. There's some lickers in here. Lickers aren't stupid crazy villagers you can perform wrestlng moves on so I don't really care for them. Yeah there's the exposed heart finisher but it's just not the same, is it?

Giant Enemy Crab at the end always kind of reminded me of Angra from God Hand. You know how it's a circular arena, he has the face at punching level and the two limbs at the side, he sometimes just vanishes upward and how he spawns in really weak minions. It's actually named U8 which 1, looks like an emoticon of a guy firing his laser and 2, means he's a sequel to U3 from RE4. There's a few similarities but I don't think a lot of people are going to guess that they're from the same lineage at a glance.

Observations. After defeating U8, Sheva will holster a pistol but the clubbin' outfit has no holster. She just puts it on her thigh and it stays there. Whenever Roidfield furrows his brow while wearing the warrior costume, it'll clip through the top of the shades. I like this because it makes it easier to argue that it's overall worse than some of the less outlandish costumes.

I'm sure lots of people really like how this level has giant sun lasers that make you duck into cover and sometimes hit the AI if you're really bad at AI wrangling.
You can actually shoot up near the lasers' source and destroy them if you have something with a big enough blast radius. I didn't bring anything like that so I had to do things the hard way. On the bright side, it made me realise that I haven't seen any of those praise the sun Dark Souls people in a while. I don't miss them but I do wonder what happened, did they go somewhere else? Or have they finally lost interest in saying it?

Behind the door there's a puzzle. A puzzle where you rotate two mirrors, then rotate two mirrors and kick two pillars then rotate four mirrors. Exciting.
At the bottom there's strange unnatural flowers, Umbrella logos and Tricell logos. They wonder how the flowers survive underground. I mean they have lots of sun reflectors around here to help get the light down and lots of the majini are wielding sickles so maybe they all really enjoy gardening or faming, who knows?

Fumbling around in trap infested caves. It's mostly pulling switches and chains before running to wherever just opened up. Not rocket science, but that's a fortunate thing because Roidfield and Sheva are not rocket scientists.

The first non-flashback glimpse of Wesker happens at the end of the chapter. He has sunglasses indoors in a moderately well-lit room, he has his hair slicked back, he is wearing a leather jumpsuit with a little chequered pattern on it. He has the DC Douglas voice and is using it to shun an Italian woman and a plague doctor. He is very very very cool.

Wesker remembers the time he killed Spencer and then says "I believe I should thank you, Spencer." which is funny because it's the second instance of him doing the "I SUPPOSE I SHOULD THANK YOU!" line which means it's actually a common part of his vernacular.
More importantly though, he should have said "Spencer? More like NEED A DIS-SPENCER HERE!" then made the TF2 domination sound.

They have multiple chainsaw guys but it doesn't mean much because Chainsaw Majini is a lot slower than Dr Salvador and even the Ubistvo was harder to read with his weird twitchy movements. I do like the thing where Chainsaw Majini pretends to die then gets up after a few seconds though.

The irrevocably Ignominious Irving was sighted again. He announced a local firework event and then chortled heartily before fleeing the premises.
Then at the end there's a section where there's a timer, you fight a bunch of enemies in a row and it starts with Josh saying he's secured you a vehicle. But he doesn't say anything about defeating multiple enemies in a row to get a nice bonus. So close.

There's a bunch of interactions where he's pulling levers and picking things up where he takes one hand off the gun part and swings it around where it weighs nothing.
Not to mention the giant metal ammo cuboid on his back that doesn't impair his movement at all.

I like how the airboat feels. In a Big Rigs kind of way. As long as you don't hit it head on at full speed, most collisions the game will laugh it off and let you turn gradually while continuing to accelerate into the wall.

Saw my first Duvalia spawn. The person I'm gonna play co-op with tomorrow used to literally turn 180 degrees and run away when one spawned in mercs. I wonder if he saves flash grenades for them now.

I didn't want the Broken Butterfly in the village. It doesn't even have that name. Guns have really boring names in RE5. The only debatably acceptable change was Striker becoming Jail Breaker. Hydra's a cool name for a three barrelled shotgun too. It's downhill from there though.
The dudes spawn on their own if you don't go into the trap so I just went straight to the best vantage point.

Pre-3-1 cutscene is pretty great.
Roidfield gets a flashback where him and Jill are fighting the Wesker. Wesker performs a series of flamboyant poses in order to evade gunfire.

There's a part where he picks Roidfield up and slides him along a table then throws him off. I always thought it was funny that this was the move to end the fight.
Imagine if someone put health bars on it and all Roidfield's punches, elbows and kicks were just taking off slivers of life, suddenly Wesker slides him along a table with nothing on it and Roidfield suddenly loses loads of health.

Sheva doesn't get a flashback. But she does say "Bioweapons were responsible for the death of my parents, and someone has to pay for that." and the fact she did not specify anyone is for you to freely interpret.
The airboat ramped off something and Sheva - who was standing up - didn't even fall down, let alone fall off. Good balance.

World 3 loadout.
-Normal difficulty
-Playing as Roidfield
-Roidfield will be wearing the heavy metal space marine costume. He has been sent on an important mission to collect pieces of a tribal insignia which will open a door and after that he has free reign to find things to crush beneath his heel. He has a minigun because most of his training consisted of playing TF2.
-Sheva will be wearing the tribal costume. She was banished from the lands for having a version of the Matilda from RE4 with infinite ammo and a much less memorable name. She has returned for vengeance and the opportunity to ride an airboat.

Obligatory turret section. Ride around in a jeep driven by a guy voiced by Dante who gives a running commentary. And it's the DMC3/4 Dante, before he lost all his enthusiasm in DMC5! Good.
Many a bicycle and automobile are rendered inoperable in this section.

There's a boss too. This time instead of shooting harpoons at a big tadpole thing you shoot bullets at El Gigante who went into some sort of protection program after RE4 and changed his name to Ndesu. Unfortunately he is up to his old tricks. Roaring. Punching. Having a big weak point protrude from his back. Just despicable.

After that, they start turning on each other. Roidfield, who minutes ago was running around knifing enemies in a zebra costume has decided to turn over a new leaf and live up to that main character billing.
He thinks Jill is alive. Detects Sheva getting cold feet and gets abrasive toward her. I like the RE6 version of this better where Roidfield's actually yelling and swearing and Piers is brave enough to go "Gee whiz who put marbles in your breakfast cereal? Chill out, it's only Resident Evil 6." in response.
Together, Roidfield and Sheva ride away on an airboat into the night.

The Hotel Mario level.
They reach the mine hotel, "Y'bring a light?" "NO"
But fortunately they don't need to persuade a koopa to lend them his, because there's a perfectly functional one lying right there.

There was another Irving cutscene. I like his stupid twitchy aiming stance, I wish he was playable in mercs. You're telling me Excella and Josh can get in but not Irving? What gives? They're all about the same level of importance aren't they?
Oh well.

Popokarimu the giant bat thing is pretty much just walk around and shoot it from behind. Considering this game has giant mutated bats and its sequel RE6 is about disease outbreaks in China, this is some impressive Covid foreshadowing.

Turret section. Chris has been amusingly useless without a weapon but it's time for his rite of passage.

Roidfield was spectacularly unhelpful. He did not throw the grenades. At times he pulled out a knife but I'm not sure why because he didn't swing it. Perhaps he wanted to try and reflect sunlight into Sheva's eyes for a funny joke.
Helicopter Mike's successor seems to have been bought down by the Kipepeos which go down in a few hits. Between RE4, RE5 and Dead Rising 1, being a helicopter pilot in a Capcom game wasn't the best idea.

I know this is really overused but Josh's surname is Stone... and he's coming into close proximity with Roidfield.
Dangerous territory.

Bullet hits standing or running enemy. Enemy soaks it up and winces, falls over if they're really sprinting.
Bullet hits climbing/jumping enemy. Enemy gets launched a 10 ft back and sometimes does a flip.
Bullet hits enemy who is carefully jumping down from a platform. Enemy refuses to feel pain until the jump is completed. When it is complete the enemy smoothly transitions into the dying animation.

World 2 loadout.
-Amateur difficulty
-Playing as Sheva.
-Roidfield will be wearing the safari outfit. A lot of think his costume is zebra themed. He is actually dressed as the crossing section of a road. He holds lots of red and green grenades which are meant to represent traffic lights. He keeps talking about Guitar Hero, but Sheva doesn't know what that is.
-Sheva will be wearing the BSAA outfit. She was unlucky enough to be assigned to work with this strange road enthusiast. She has all four shotguns. Ithaca, M3, Jail Breaker, Hydra. There was a mix up when they were assigned their equipment and she holds on to everything because this incarnation of Roidfield cannot be trusted with a firearm... Or can he? Turret section inbound.

This is a little embarrassing but I can't remember which Uroboros is which from memory. There's Uroboros Mkono, Uroboros Aheri and something else.
I don't think anyone would complain if you called it evil spaghetti thing or something though. Even though it cost me the gold ring, I decided to use the incinerator.

I also noticed how similar that fight feels to Verdugo from 4. It chases you down a hallway, it follows you into a room, the door beeps as it seals behind it, you tip over cannisters (Ice in 4, fire in 5) and that makes it vulnerable to damage.

Roidfield is abrasive and cold to Sheva. He is most likely unhappy about being an RE1 character with a weak pistol while she's one-shotting things the second they come into view.
The infamously inconsiderate "Irving" was last seen escaping in a jeep driven with his Rito girlfriend.
Perhaps more wanton aggression will lift Roidfield's spirits.

Allyson down.
I remember when this game was coming out, people used to speculate about her being an important character. Someone I know was angry when they found out she just shows up, tries to tear the S off the back of Roidfield's S.T.A.R.S outfit and then gets tased with a stun rod and then doesn't turn into a plaga because the stun rod negates plaga spawns.

Instead she lives on as a one-off spawn on the reunion version of the Public Assembly stage.

Another note on the stutter walk you get by mashing A while walking.
If you were to pick the shirtless mad max costume or the tribal outfit and perform this technique, you could pretend your character was shivering because it's cold where they are.

1-1 down.
Roidfield killed lots of people. Sheva killed some of the ones that were out of Roidfield's reacher. If they were closer, he would have gotten them too.
A rather exuberant gentleman with shades and a megaphone spoke to a crowd, presumably reciting things to do with itineraries and upcoming events.

Reynaud - simply because he spoke a different language - accused the man of not knowing what he was talking about. For some reason this caused them to destroy him and then attempt to physically obfuscate Roidfield and Sheva.
I assume Oblivion combat music played but I wouldn't know because I put Future Funk on over the game.

At the end, a perfectly good door was destroyed by a HUNK cosplayer for reasons never adequately explored.

I have made contact with the magical silver box that causes Roidfield to wear a big green jacket and causes Sheva significant enough sight loss to require her to wear glasses. In the cutscene they were reloading guns that they don't actually have. Very mysterious.
Armed and aggressive, Roidfield proceeds under the occasionally watchful eye of the highly irresponsible Sheva.

Reynard, for a guy who sounds as fed up and weary as he does, sure sets up a lot of fun times. He gives out weapons and wacky outfits. The first mention of Uroboros and Irving comes from him too.

Additional observations.
Roidfield is wearing a costume exclusive to this point of the game. Also his walk animation has all fingers except his index finger folded, perhaps he is pretending to hold a firearm, perhaps he just enjoys pointing at things.

Advanced gameplay technique.
If you rapidly press A while holding forward, Roidfield does that stutter run thing Tidddus can do in FFX by mashing B while walking.

Non Canon opening.
-A cloaked, bird like creature is seeing making lotsa spaghetti out of an unsuspecting fellow. Perhaps this harpy-like creature is also the reason this game has eggs scattered around.
-Roidfield has a war flashback after thinking about the word partner. Jill Valentine is dead in this timeline.
-Roidfield tells Sheva that he wants to be called Chris. She goes for it but I do not.
It's a bright, sunny day in a bustling town and a very serious adventure full of tribulation and gripping emotive experiences lies ahead.

Chris and Sheva turn around. Everyone is gone. Perhaps they were never there to begin with? Foreshadowing?

-Veteran difficulty.
-Playing as Roidfield.
-Roidfield will be wearing the S.T.A.R.S. costume. He has fallen through a portal and wound up on another continent. Roidfield knows only violent solutions to obstructions. He only had a stun rod and a basic pistol when he was teleported though.
-Sheva will be wearing the business costume. She is some sort of M.I.B. agent who bought him here. She is more prepared of course, I'm giving her a Lightning Hawk and a Dragunov Sniper.

And done.

Rushes Link bare handed. Puts him on the ground in seconds, Link stays down long enough for a whole Ganon speech and exchange with the king.
Pulls out two swords and unleashes his faces of evil to the fullest extent. Slain easily by the same post-beatdown Link.

That's a great cutscene before the fight though.
And the end is nice too. The last surviving Ocarina oO Time character has been banished. The temple dwellers and Tetra are free to return to the surface and be Wind Waker characters again.

Overall I'm happier with this than I expected it to be. I remembered it being like following directions and not really getting much say in where you go or how you tackle things. I think working the triforce shards into my route early added some good variety and I definitely prefer it to playing a bunch of temples then being told to go and marathon all 8 shards.
I feel like if you were free to get all your items earlier in the game, it'd be better too. It sucks seeing an island in the distance, going there and finding out you don't have the item to access it.
Ganon's tower as a whole is the best part no contest.

Okay I actually just got hyped up by Zelda Wind Waker. Hitting three shots on the Puppet Ganon snake form is the best.

I'm gonna be fair and give old manondorf a chance to try and top that but I'm thinking there's no way Puppet Ganon isn't the best fight in this game.

Furthermore you know what? I like Ganon's tower in this game. The YTP boss rush area, the weird puzzle section for first timers, this boss and another one who is hopefully good. It's a good mix.
Much, much better than TP's last level and I don't remember enjoying OOT Ganon's tower that much.

Things that happened in the boss rush.
1- I am not sure to this day if it's the dev intended strategy so climb up the grappling hook, stand on the last bar, back up an inch then jump and deku leaf across, letting go at the last second so Link grabs the platform. Gohma went down in four hits which is the same as a Bokoblin.
2- In Kalle Demos' part I inexplicably got a parkour roll I didn't ask Link to do when I jumped on to one of the platforms and then went in the pit. Neat.
3- They almost got me in the Earth Temple area where they make you watch that Stalfos spawn. The stairs were going up, I managed to get on either the last or second last and ride it up.
4- The Wind Temple one made me feel dumb. I was trying to perfect a launch into deku leaf glide all the way across. Then I noticed the hookshot symbol on the wall.
