We're talking about two different things here. Changing a character's ethnicity is different from having a different version of a character. And most companies do not want to have the latter.

Changing a character's ethnicity means that you have the same character, but a different ethnic background. Having a different version of a character is like having the upbeat blue-clad George Clooney Batman in a live action movie while the animated Batman and comic book Batman are dark and gritty. That misstep caused Batman movies to go into an eight-year hiatus. Today, they make sure that even the Lego Batman is gloomy. That's character consolidation. That's branding. When you see the name, you know what to expect.

Yara Shahidi is clearly playing the classic Tinkerbell. She may yet prove to be a little modernized in some of her mannerisms, but they saw fit to make sure that she had the same costume and hairstyle that we all recognize.

Unless the new version for this live action movie is going to be the only version of Tinkerbell from now on, then my point still stands. A different version.

Okay, that surprises me.

I support inclusive casting, but Tinkerbell is genuinely the last character in any Disney property that I would expect to receive a cosmetic change. She's always been Disney's second-biggest mascot character after Mickey Mouse himself. In that regard, it's kind of like changing Mickey's fur.

I wouldn't be surprised if they did it to prevent another studio from imagining Tinkerbell as a Black character. When CBS tried to make an animated series called Peter Pan and the Pirates, Disney threatened to sue if Tinkerbell was depicted as anything other than a ball of light. Executives then pointed to the fact that Tinkerbell receives a human description in the original novel. CBS backed down from making the cartoon -- but Fox picked it up months later as a middle finger to Disney. Just because a character is public domain, that doesn't prevent Disney lawyers from bullying other studios.

Anyway, she's kinda cute.

Most people understand that different versions of a character can exist at the same time. Even by the same company.

There is a very interesting difference. Notice how the breed of the dog is only mentioned once and not focused on. And how people won't make a topic about a heroic Pit Bull who protected a child as a fire was raging. Because that doesn't follow the anti-pitbbull narrative.

Yes I know pit lab mix but in the negative stories I bet the mix is never mentioned at all. He would be treated as any other pitbull.
