AA1 is better than AA3.

I like the variety of the cases in 1 better than the overarching story of 3. Also, I generally dislike flashbacks in fiction, so that hurts 3 in my eyes as well.

I dont know if Im saying this rightI just dont know if a movie parodying sexism works when your main character is a sexist who: has a downfall and is rescued from that downfall through NO effort on his part (meaning NO real growing or learning or changing), and ultimately, he ends the movie a complete hero,

Making matters worse is the fact that when he finally does get his comeuppance he sits around and pouts about it. Like how are we supposed to sympathize with that?

You both nailed it. The lack of character development at the end killed this movie (although IMO it was dead before then). I don't know how that script made it into production... Burgundy learns nothing yet still gets the girl and the happy ending? C'mon now.

I actually think both Franco and Park are pretty good in this. Franco is almost impossibly stupid, but he always did that well and it was enjoyable enough seeing him buffoon himself through the movie. And, honestly, I feel like a movie with just Franco probably works better. Do you need Rogen to be the straight man for all of this when there are a half dozen other characters filling that role? Do you need a five minute scene of him shoving a capsule up his butt? Or a completely unnecessary sex scene which almost feel gross now that I know Rogen himself directed this? There is a lot of painful padding here, including a full romance subplot I could not have possibly cared any less about. Shes the propagandist for this horrible regime and Im still like hey, you can do better, lady.

You and a couple others brought up Rogen's character being unnecessary, and I'm on board with that. He really doesn't impact the plot enough, and perhaps they would've done better to introduce Kim as soon as Skylark arrives in North Korea. Then just focus on the relationship between those two and expand the relationship and the movie's themes.

Gotta say I'm bummed to see The Interview land in the Bottom 5, but most of the complaints launched at it were pretty well reasoned, especially this one:

BetrayedTangy posted...
27. GavsEvans
I wonder what happened to the last ricin strip? We didnt see it again after Aaron was interrupted while trying to take it off, so I was expecting the film to end with North Korea being further destabilised and descending into civil war after Sook was accidentally poisoned. That would have been meaner than the ending we got, but also funnier and more satirical as a commentary on the US interfering in a foreign country and leaving without cleaning up the mess theyd made.

Not only was that a loose end, but the ricin strips in general should've had more impact/consequences. Yes, Kim's security guard friend dies as a result of eating one, but after the extra strips were introduced, I expected a bigger payoff. All we really got from them was that "Don't touch her with your right hand!" sex scene.

I've got to appreciate Tangy for including a Vito Corleone parody by the don himself immediately after doing the Godfather-dominated crime list.

Was thinking the same thing.

29. Vis
But then you have this whole plot point of Carmine being played by Marlon Brando, looking like Vito Corleone, and just generally acting like the Godfather whenever possible. It was really distracting, and it made the otherwise interesting plot feel like the writers werent confident in their ability to deliver on the premise.

This is on-point. Brando's presence dominated the movie and sidetracked whatever interest I had in the fledgling plot.

so I strongly disagree with the comedy/horror not going together, and could actually go into a whole spiel about how the two mesh extraordinarily well when paired together right due to having similar structures of relying on surprise and catching the viewer offguard.

Totally understand where you're coming from. You're spot-on about the structure and how both genres build tension in order to hit a punch-line/scare.

That said, the Horror/Comedy subgenre has never clicked for me personally. The tonal differences clash too much for my liking. I like Horror best when it's dark/severe/thrilling, and Comedy offsets those vibes in most cases. Plus, the Comedy usually overpowers the Horror, which is a bummer for me.

They wasted John Candy. This might be the worst I've seen Harold Ramis. And I'm afraid I hate Bill Murray now.

Also, I've written this like ten times now for different movies, but man did this not age well. But this was somehow worse. It felt like someone's secondary goal was to make a movie and their primary goal was to make sure women knew he hated them, and he wasn't all that concerned with that first part.

Hahaha! I missed these types of writeups during the Organized Crime Gauntlet. It's good to have you back.

A bunch of knuckleheads join the army and do dumb shit in what is possibly the most unfunny comedy I have ever had the displeasure of seeing.
Here's a rundown of how things play out. They do basic army stuff. The idiot protagonist mouths off at the sarge and/or commits treason and somehow never faces any serious consequences. They then play the same musical fanfare over and over and over and call it a soundtrack.
The laughs are in very short supply in this two hour long slog, but the cringes just keep on coming. Seriously for fuck's sake having your characters constantly sing at weird times is not funny plz stahp.

Yep, Karo, you nailed it here. Comedy or not, you need consequences, or at least some sort of payoff. Murray getting away with everything isn't funny.

I've been reading Stephen King's Fairy Tale.

I'm close to the end. It's... eh. The problem is that the first and second halves of the book are essentially two different stories with little cohesion. I actually really liked the characterization in the first half, it's just that the whole time I was thinking "Where is this going...?" and then it turned out the answer was less interesting than I had hoped.

Bummer. I was hoping King found his groove again, but it seems he's still in the funk he entered into after Mr. Mercedes.

Big_Bob posted...
I know he has a reputation for bad endings, but I basically lost interest in the book at the halfway point. A whole lot of characters are introduced in a very short period, and it becomes very difficult to become attached to any of them. I also found myself asking why the main character was even bothering for a lot of his actions. It basically boils down to "The plot demands it", but he has too much to lose and not enough to gain to justify his decisions.

This echoes some of my complaints with Sleeping Beauties. Especially the "falls apart after the middle" part.

I highly recommend playing Lord of Shadow on Hard difficulty. Makes you appreciate the gameplay mechanics much more.

Holy crap, I just realized I did points the opposite way. Oh, well third time's the charm right? I'll have the proper points and first elimination posted here soon. Sorry about the mix up everyone!

Tangy trying to satirize Gauntlet topics. I love it.

Yeah, without trying I know what the bottom three are. After that its muddy but Im sure I could try to figure it out if I wanted.

I dont want to because half the fun is stressing if your favorites are going to drop next, but I technically do have additional information so Id rather not have people wondering if Im using that or not.

Gotcha. Well, whenever you feel there's enough doubt, feel free to join.

Might also be smart if Tangy deletes the original list at this point.

I imagine the reason he doesn't want to participate is that it is now plainly obvious to him what the last place movie is (and maybe a few at the top of the list as well).

Ohhhhh because he's seen the before/after scores. I get it now.

Might be best if Suprak waits until we enter the Top 25 or so before wagering (or whenever he feels that he doesn't have an advantage)

If you want to go through and redo the numbers for everyone, then I promise I would not participate in the Vegas odds or make any in topic comments

@Suprak_the_Stud Oh, please participate in Vegas. We want your money! Which reminds me...

ANYONE can participate in the Vegas odds predictions, regardless of whether you submitted a rankings list or not.

Thrilled Suprak is on board! Brought us up to 10 rankers and created more ties/one-point margins.

I love how tight these rankings are. I flip-flopped my ranks about a thousand times on Sunday and probably caused all sorts of butterfly effects. Hell, we all probably did.
