Yeah Corrin sucks and its kind of a shame because I think Robin is actually pretty good.

I actually really dislike the way they're going with Byleth and Alear as far as 'avatar characters' go because its kind of the worst possible option IMO. Literal nothing personality silent blank slate with fake choices AND you don't actually get to customize them in a meaningful way.

I'd rather they do either of the previous options (no avatar, designed Lords with interesting personalities and story OR completely customizable Avatar that's either silent or has a generic personality that says as close to neutral answers as is possible).

Yeah as an adult with responsibilities I simply don't have the time to replay long maps due to one mistake. I'm glad this is becoming prevalent in SRPGs.

Unless its a lord I guess but at that point you lost the mission and there should be consequences for that.

Yeah rain is annoying and it doesn't even really affect anything tactically because it slows enemies just as much as you (whereas deserts don't because enemies tend to have mass fliers etc in those maps for the added challenge).

Luckily its only in a couple maps so it doesn't really detract much.

Yeah that's probably worth mentioning too that you only get one Fell Contract in the entire game and its literally like 3 maps before the ending lol

I don't think I remember ever seeing that, especially when the VN specifically says "because of this horrible injury". But yeah, it is still left ambiguous, I suppose- he's never outright confirmed it. I definitely think it leans much more toward 'was born male but raised female' than anything else however. It's possible to have the same gender identity issues without the injury factoring in, I suppose, but then why mention the injury is the cause of it at all? Kinda feels like an Occams Razor type scenario to me or whatever.

But yeah, draw your own conclusion on that whole debate I guess.

I do kind of agree that the answer to things were better being kept ambiguous in the VN. It's not that hard to puzzle the answers out on your own by the end, and anyone that kept up with actually trying/theorycrafting pretty much just got a "yeah, that's what I thought" reaction from reading Confession.

What really makes me love the series though is that, outside of some of the sillier comedy scenes like the aforementioned Episode 4 fights, nearly every single scene is actually relevant in some way or another. I've reread the series probably around 10 times at this point overall (especially if you count the 2 LPs I've watched other people read it in), and its really, really impressive. Even a lot of the magical combat 'going full fantasy' scenes are very important in retrospect.

Completely unrelated to the serious discussion, probably my favorite bit of trivia in the entire series: Lambdadelta got her top 3 spot after Episode 8 in the character polls after all.

LMAO so I play pretty much every FE ironman after my first playthrough these days, and so much for using Gwendolyn in my FE6 run I mentioned. She died the first turn she joined because I didn't realize a steel bow archer was in range of her.

There is, though. At the end of Episode 7's Tea Party you get flashes of things that make the rest of Episode 7 less 'wholesome', including the implication that Kinzo raped Beatrice II, and Yasu/Beatrice ranting and crying about how they "can't love due to this injury, so they might as well be furniture".

Basically, combined with the whole gender confusion thing between Shannon/Kanon and Lion, the answer is that they were born male as "Lion", but after falling off the cliff they got a gender-disfiguring injury. Then because they no longer had functioning male genitals they were raised female as "Sayo", who got the Servant name of Shannon.

It's also why Beatrice rants at Shannon about love and show serious vitriol towards the notion of sex when killing her in Episode 2 (because it's something that Sayo can't actually do in the way George would presumably want).

I think what I want to do next FE wise is play through Binding Blade and intentionally use all of the scrub characters. That sounds fun.

I'd actually say its a VN with an SRPG system in it because the time you spend in the VN portion is WAAAAAAY more than the time you spend in the gameplay portion. Especially in Mask of Deception, where you can easily go like 5 hours of reading between each gameplay section early on (every Utaware game is backloaded with gameplay, though- that's not unique to Deception).

13 Sentinels is in a similar boat but I don't know I'd say its a VN because even during the plot-heavy parts of Remembrance (which is the vast majority of the game there too) you're controlling a character running around and trying to puzzle out how to advance. Even if it is very easy to do so most times.

Regardless, either way, they're very VN-adjacent as both titles have the majority of their time dedicated to just reading.

Granted it was *checks calender* oh god almost 12 years ago, so I can't be 100% confident that's what happened. Also I spent like the last few years before it spending a good chunk of my free time between Episodes theorizing with the fanbase so I was already used to going through everything with a fine tooth comb.

You know what is sad but also funny about the Fates writing? Before it came out they were pretty heavily advertising that they got a professional novelist to write the story.

The main issue is that they don't address everything in each route so you have entire plotlines just dropped or dealt with off screen. It's not even really a case of 'well just play the other routes if you want to see those then' because those routes also have the same problem, where even if its addressed in one you've already played you're simply left asking "Yeah, but what about that thing that was a major plot point in the other route? Where did it go??". Golden Deer is especially awful about this.

It's not written in a way that allows it to form a cohesive narrative. The routes don't really get across a consistent theme or plot- there's no actual structure to the entirety of the story. Adding in a true ending fundamentally fixes that problem as long as the writing quality itself is fine (which I think it is, 3H's problems are structural problems, not moment-to-moment writing generally, which the same can't be said in Fates). It would let you get all of that focus on each individual element of the routes, but still brings them back in a way that ties all of it together.

EDIT: And no, Revelations ending sucked, but as said Fates had the additional problem of the writing just being bad. It's not the 'golden route' itself that caused the ending to be bad.

The problem with golden routes is they turn the entire idea of choosing what to do into a waste of time since your options are just A) Be a moronic asshole, B) Be a stupid piece of shit, or C) Pick the obviously objectively correct option because you're not an imbecile who even considers A and B, right?

There are plenty of ways they could have done a Golden Route that aren't 'give you the choice from the beginning where you'd have to be a moron to not pick it' like Fates did. Requiring you to complete at least one route beforehand, for instance. VNs have done route splits with true/golden endings for literal decades before Fates and 3H and pulled them off well.

3H in particular literally already has time powers in it. There are absolutely ways to write it so that there are still stakes as well.

Frankly I kind of think 3H needed something like this anyway, even beyond my own taste, because I do actually think it has a big writing problem in that because of how they did the routes, none of them really are very satisfying endings.

And yes MuvLuv does come with the caveat of "You need to read Extra and Unlimited before Alternative". I don't think Extra is bad though a lot of people do, Unlimited is pretty good but not great, and Alternative is why anyone actually recommends MuvLuv in the first place.

It's definitely a lot of investment for the payoff, but I think the payoff is well worth it imo.

13 Sentinels is VN adjacent

And no I don't think it will ruin other VNs, but it is very good. I prefer Utawarerumono and MuvLuv on the list you gave alone.

When I paired royals I went Ryoma x Elise, Xander x Sakura, Takumi x Carmilla, and Hinoka x Leo because all of them seemed the most funny.

Though first time through Revelations I married Elise. <3 Elise.

I went with either Hinoka or Oboro in Birthright (I honestly can't remember which I did first), went with Ophelia in Conquest, and then Elise in Revelations.

I think I'd also have much less of a problem with that aspect of 3 Houses if Byleth WASN'T basically an Avatar-lite. If they weren't silent and had their own thoughts and motivations behind what they were doing it would be a lot easier to enjoy the story for me. But when you're giving me a ton of choice (well, really, "choices", because most choices in 3H actually are completely meaningless, but they clearly want to give the illusion of choice) in everything EXCEPT the major story beats, it takes me aaaaaaaaaall the way out of it.

Honestly a big reason why I dislike both Fates and 3 Houses story is I don't enjoy stories where they railroad me into doing something I don't want to do (like killing or causing harm to characters I don't want to do so to, simply because the plot of that route demands it).

Now 3 Houses I don't think is a bad story (though I do think it has some glaring problems as well) unlike Fates, it's just not for me.

IIRC that one was entirely replaced from the original Japanese puzzle in the translation. Several others were edited slightly to make more sense in English, as well.

EDIT: Also, you should definitely reload any you get wrong and get them right, because there are extra scenes for getting them right.

Well I can't say the same for me but that would explain the voice and name. It does just seem to be speculation so far however, the website doesn't specify a gender. His/her VA is male and the dialogue has them use 'ore' which is a masculine pronoun, but its not really definitive even still because the VA has voiced female characters before and its not suuuuper uncommon for masculine female characters to use male pronouns.

But it is like 80% likely at this point, yeah.
