My parents took me with them to see Empire Strikes Back when I was a year old, the first movie they ever took me too. First one I remember watching is New Hope though.

If you piece it together from certain lines in the movie, the neighborhood they're trying to save is either officially or unofficially called the Goondocks (play on boondocks?), so naturally they call themselves the Goonies.

I loved the movie as a kid and still do, but even back then it felt like a fair amount of scenes were missing; this was confirmed later in life when I found out that, among other things, they actually did film a scene with an octopus. I also remember reading a magazine or something as a kid that showed a production still of Data getting bullied by a couple guys in a convenience store, something he alludes to in the movie.

Supposedly there's an actual list of Goonie rules that never made it into the movie.

The octopus scene adds nothing it's awful
