Yeah the bold, that will probably be the only way to actually weed off bad faith actors and those who truly are Trans in good faith.

On one hand it was still a fucked up thing for him to do, but on the other hand it was probably a necessary thing to codify the rulings to be more specific.
Was it, though? Because if there was an actual problem of men pretending to identify as women in order to compete, you would expect that it would be more widespread than just this one guy, who was only doing it to prove a point.

Itd be like if I went around taking all the change from every take a penny, leave a penny tray in order to prove the point that someone acting in bad faith might take advantage of these systems. Sure, no one is actually bothering to do that, and it isnt an actual problem, but it could be!

Would that make me an asshole? Yes. Would it prove the point that rules need to be in place to stop the problem of bad actors from stealing all the pennies? No, because that isnt an actual problem that is happening.

But all that discussion is a moot point, because he wasnt trying to make the point that the rules need to be hammered out and codified to protect womens athletic competitions from interference by bad actors, the point he (and the organization backing him) was trying to make is that trans women arent women, and any step that can be taken to make it harder for them to compete against cis women is a good and positive step. Because, of course, they are bigots.

But did you like it
I wouldnt go so far as to say I liked it but it was worth a watch. Felt a bit too much like a short film that got padded out, and the cinematographic concept, while clever and definitely unnerving, isnt strong enough to carry the film for its entire runtime.

Id compare and contrast it with Lynchs weirder stufflike Lynch, it has a story to tell but is far less concerned with the story than it is with creating a certain vibe for its audience to experience; unlike Lynch, who creates terror by showing us horrifying things and refusing to let us look away, Skinamarink more often opts to angle the camera away from whatever action is happening in the scene, almost as if threatening to show us what we dont want to see. In this way it is very good at creating incredibly tense moments, but I think that the conceit wears thin after a while.

Bottom line is, dont use just chronological order, and dont start with the Rincewind novels.

I try not to make a practice of engaging with people on this site whom Ive identified as being overtly transphobic, so it behooves me to try to clarify these things.

The fact that your reaction to me pointing out that you are (perhaps unintentionally) misgendering someone is to shrug your shoulders and accuse me of trying to derail the topic suggests that my time might be best spent simply tagging you appropriately so I know to avoid interacting with you in the future, and moving on.

If someone is liberal in all aspects of society/culture except one, are they liberal?
  1. Liberalism is not above being susceptible to bigotry. How many white liberals harbor racist tendencies, how many non-Jewish liberals use antisemitic phrases in casual conversation, how many straight liberals didnt support gay marriage? How many liberal men still engage in casual misogyny in their work and personal lives? Bigotry must be called out and anti-trans bigotry is no different, no matter how liberal a bigoted person might see themselves as being.
  2. Is she even really all that liberal? She wrote a book series where: slavery is okaya good thing even, because the slaves actually like it, honestly; the most prominent Asian character is named Cho Chang; some races (like the greedy hook-nosed ones who control all the banks) are just bad and cant really be trusted, and thats okay; lycanthropy, an intentional metaphor for people with HIV/AIDS, is represented by one single good and noble character, while the rest of the group are depicted as disgusting sickos who get off on intentionally infecting new people and all join the bad side in the big war
  3. As others have correctly pointed out, she has chosen to make this particular issue a sticking point, around which she has devoted almost the entirety of her public persona. Scrolling back through her Twitter feed for the month of April, out of 37 tweets, replies, and retweets she posted, 17 were about the trans issue, 17 were replies to fans on a post about the 10th anniversary of one of her books, one was about her husband and feminism in general, one was about the treatment of women in Iran, and one was about the first African woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. So when you accuse the left of breaking with her because of one issue, when we have (arguably) other areas where we might find common ground, keep in mind it is Rowling who is the one who never seems to be interested in talking about the issues where common ground might be found. She may agree with the left on 99% of issues but she seems quite determined to spend 95% of her time talking about that other 1%.

The screenshot is showing that the NPR Twitter account has been tagged as US state-affiliated media by Twitter. This is a tag generally reserved for (usually Russian and Chinese) government-controlled news orgs used specifically for propaganda purposes. The implication is that Musk likely gave his approval for NPR receiving this tag because Twitter would not have added it without his say-so.

I think its very, very telling that to represent the detrans side they picked four content creators, only one of whom isnt openly an anti-trans activist. Most detrans people are not gender critical, dont believe that being transgender is some sort of social contagion fooling children into mutilating their genitals, and dont have a problem with gender-affirming care or increasing the acceptance and accessibility of it.

So really this video is a huge fail on two fronts: first in that it portrays the opposing sides of the trans debate as being equally valid, and second in that it vilifies detrans people in the eyes of the trans community by amplifying some of the most extremely anti-trans voices among them, thereby portraying detrans people as largely anti-trans rights.
