Noisia dropped a new collection of remixes, The Resonance VI, that features some of the coolest electronic songs I've ever heard -- this is just the first track. If inventive sound design is a thing you appreciate then I highly recommend the other remixes

listening to this with a stax l500mk2 headphones w/ l700 ear pads. ok this is the first headphone ive experienced that gives me the illusion of the sound coming from in front of me and not from two drivers next to my ears . i thought that was just audiophile bs initially because i didn't get this illusion till i readjusted the headband to conform to my head properly (if i adjust the headband just one notch down i lose the illusion entirely).
If you wanna hear some music that's designed in that way (i.e. binaural recording), try this EP:

I'm helping mentor a younger programmer on our team, and I'm constantly reminded of this
https://thoughtbot.com/blog/chestertons-fence

TLDR -- he's got solid coding skills and can grasp stuff pretty easily, but he's way too eager to essentially come up with new solutions for problems that we've already solved in the codebase.

It's like man... I get you want to help, but we don't need to reinvent class Wheel

curious how much C++ experience there is here in this topic. As a game programmer it's basically a requirement for efficient game code so for those of y'all talking about game dev, I do recommend learning it for anyone who's aiming to join a AAA studio

Oooh, nice. Had a lot of interest in that over the years. Was put off a bit in undergrad studies. Like someone else mentioned, making a small game was always an interest.
Unity and Unreal are free to use if you ever get the itch! they each have a marketplace for assets if you don't particularly care about learning how to model/animate.

Unreal's Blueprint scripting system in particular is a pretty intuitive way to get started with game scripting/event-based logic flow etc. But it's been a while since I've used either, so I'm not sure what their online support/documentation's like these days.

So for me I used to listen to way more metal in middle and high school than I do now. In the like 10+ years since then I've gone into the deep end of electronic music in terms of new music that I listen to.

I definitely still really enjoy all the metal I used to listen to -- I've never lost interest in any of the stuff I used to love, in part I guess because of the personal/nostalgic connection. But, I'm not really actively seeking out new metal bands these days, and so I'm not really interested in finding new bands with harsh vocals, unless there's somethign particularly cool or distinctive about it.

My high school required 2 years of Latin and I think it may have been the one of the most useful classes I've ever taken. Besides the advantage of being able to reason out the meaning of words based on common latin roots, the language itself has a very regimented grammar system. There's a bit of algorithmic thinking required in putting together Latin sentences, and I'd argue it helped me be a better programmer today

Also Latin for me personally was very fun to learn -- in the second year of Latin, we translated excerpts from Caesar's account of the Gallic wars. It was actually really interesting to translate accounts of battles and descriptions of military strategies/army organization.

For anyone who played and enjoyed 6DOF shooters like Descent or any of its sequels back in the 90s:
https://store.steampowered.com/app/448850/Overload/

Overload was developed by several of the original Descent devs (IIRC there were a couple sequels made using the Descent IP but weren't well received)

This game is actually such a great throwback game, it's realtively simplistic but the flight controls are smooth as heck, and the gameplay/maps/AI/weapons/etc are all just as fun as I remember them being in the old Descent games. Some "modern" gameplay features are here too like a kind of upgrade system where the currency is found by exploring all the nooks and crannies of the levels. There's even VR support which (if you can stomach it) is pretty cool.

The soundtrack is hella good too!

Jon Hopkins - Abandon Window
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zjKMUCwui-I

So this song is a real winner for me in that it has a deeply introspective/emotional effect, but also is really interesting to listen to. For context it is right in the middle of one of my favorite electronic albums... The first 4 or 5 songs are generally quite glitchy, chaotic, and overwhelming, culminating in a loud 10 minute techno track that precedes this one. Right at the end it all crescendoes, and then it goes into silence and just transitions into this one above. As far as emotional effect, well, the song is supposed to be about someone who is drowning or trapped under rubble, and giving up on their last hope of life and coming to terms with their fate. so yeah ... melancholic I guess, but also, peaceful?

And the interesting bit is just how the simple piano melody gets swallowed up into the deeper sonic spectrum, and eventually blends into smooth synth pads at the end. IIRC in the outro, those little echoey pops in the background were a recording of fireworks at the 2012 London Olympics, which really gives a kind of cool sense of depth and scale

I've been using Apple Music (more specifically iTunes) for years to manage my music library (all downloaded, not streamed). Man, that piece of software has an infuriating number of bugs and usability issues that make me want to find an alternative .... BUT that being said, it's the best (downloaded) music library management software I know of that has a relatively fleshed out metadata tracking system, as well as the "smart playlist" stuff which has been super rad. I've been able to build some cool playlists that rotate music in and out depending on rating, time since last played, lifetime play count etc. Spotify certainly does a shit job at that kind of thing.
