This is a very common misconception. In normal everyday situations, they're behind the curve. Most businesses still only accept cash, they bought into the smartphone hype years later, and computers are still viewed as something akin to household appliances to the point where many people are still using desktops from years ago. You can see this for yourself by going to Japanese websites. They still look and feel exactly like websites did in the late 90s-mid 00s. Streaming television/films still haven't become as popular as in other countries because legacy cable is still a thing.

I live in Japan, very rural Japan. Even here most places take credit card and payment apps are also taken by most places now (stuff like PayPay, RakutenPay, Docomo Pay, etc.). Japan had feature phones with internet, payment functions, etc. far before the rest of the world which is why emoji were invented in Japan. Most people have smart phones now, but it was due to how advanced the feature phones were that smart phone adoption lagged. Computer point is just weird, every country is neglecting home PCs in favor of mobile and tablets. Websites is true, most websites suck, but that's due to a lack of web developers. Streaming is very popular here, not sure why you think it isn't. Other countries also still have cable, so again what is your point?

first of all

when not invading or being invaded, just allow pausing. this is trivial
when paused, eject them from whatever queue there is and put them back in once the game in unpaused

then after invading or being invaded there are 2 acceptable options

1. no pause
2. allow a 60 second pause after which the other player can unpause
this has already been implemented in other online games effectively, and theres been no convincing argument itt for why its not possible in From games

FF14 is different because its not 1-2 players, but thousands

Sure something like that could be done, but I think that 2nd option is very much unfeasible, because it's not 1-2 players, it's 1-4, and having everyone able to pause with 4 people will just be annoying guaranteed, so I think only the no pause after invasions start makes sense. The que resetting though could cause some issues. I am not sure how much of an issue, but I don't think it's as simple as saying there would be no problems.

I was playing FFXIV concurrently with Elden Ring. It doesn't let you pause. Only other online games I play are fighting games, and you can't pause when playing online. I used to PvP a lot in DS2 and I can't imagine how annoying being able to pause would be. I would probably have dudes pausing on me after I invaded just to troll.

Not sure if it has been covered but the reason Sekiro has a pause button is the same reason the other Souls games don't. The nature of how multiplayer works (Sekiro has no multiplayer). You need to exit the game to pause for that reason.

Is it like South Korea where the cops try their best to "smooth" things over so they don't have to do paperwork and stuff?

Like here, they would have just had the guy bring back the stolen stuff, apologize, and then try and get the store to not press charges.

Yeah. The cops don't want to actually go through the criminal process. Most people who are arrested are released without charge, even for serious crimes. It's the same reason Japan has a 99% conviction rate. They only press charges if they are sure they will be found guilty, because a not guilty charge can ruin your career as a prosecutor (the idea being that if he wasn't guilty and you tried to prove he was anyway, you should not be a prosecutor). You end up with this situation where foreigners will complain about Japanese conviction rates, while praising the low crime rate and prison population in Japan, failing to realize the connection. The truth is most people just don't get in any real trouble. Even for major crimes.

The cops in this story are dumb as fuck. Not for letting him go back to his apartment, but for letting him out of their sight to walk into a different room unaccompanied. This man was supposed to be in custody. He could have just as easily come back with a weapon or something

He wasn't under arrest. He was asked to come to the station voluntarily for questioning (had he refused they likely would have started the process to get a warrant for his arrest, but it wouldn't have been possible on the spot). That's usually how it works here. And also people attacking police with weapons isn't a huge concern here. Japan isn't America.

In about 70 years people gonna have debates about who fucked up their own legacy worse, Lovecraft or Rowling?

Lovecraft was considered racist even by his own contemporaries. He died poor and had no copyright on any of his works. His legacy became separated from him the minute he died. Other authors had even been working in his setting before he died, so that it effectively functions as public domain makes it very easy to separate the art from the artist.

Rowling though is actually benefiting from her work, and the copyright will continue long after she dies and her estate will likely continue supporting TERF things. This makes separating the art from the artist very hard, because even if you want to play Hogwarts Legacy for example, you have to support financially a woman who has basically dedicated her life to hating trans people at this point.

This seems to be a common sentiment and, if I get into it again, prolly what I will do.

The game was fun, but compared to Dark Souls, Bloodborne and Sekiro (still not finished)... it felt shallow. At some point I was just telling myself "This is cool but I'd rather play these other games"

The problem is that for whatever reason most people want an open world experience. If you make something open world it sells better. You probably felt all the best areas were the legacy dungeons that played more like those other games. This is because a linear experience is crafted around providing the player something specific the creators felt would be interesting. Think of it as a guided tour versus just wandering around a place. But beyond that you also run into the weird difficulty balance issues. You can go through the game in any order you want to a degree, but difficulty is scaled around a certain order.

On the other hand there have always been a lot of people who say they want to explore in the Souls games and don't really like bosses and hard combat and those people often found Sekiro the worst (largely bosses with small largely inconsequential exploration sections between them, no way to mitigate difficulty with summons or leveling, etc.). So it might be boring to you if you really enjoyed say Sekiro.

It's funny because that's its reputation in Japan, and partly why anime otaku have such a social stigma: "it's for kids." The typically most commonly accepted anime/animation/whatever there tends to just be some anime series, Ghibli and ESPECIALLY Disney.
I legit had no idea Disney was so popular there until I stayed for a while. But you can make almost instant friends and have instant conversations if you talk about Disney with damn near everyone. At least, that was my experience there.

Contrary to popular belief, anime stuff really isn't that big in Japan overall. Again, some series become popular (Like Shounen Jump stuff), but they're exceptions.

I've lived in Japan for five years and I can tell you this is simply not true at all. Anime is extremely popular and mainstream in Japan. It's everywhere. The most popular songs are often anime themes, most watched shows on Netflix etc. are usually anime, highest grossing movies are anime, my town has anime themed train station, bus, and an anime museum, and it's not the only town like that.

Anyone trying to claim anime is actually no big deal in Japan is just letting you know they are lying.

If you're doing the kind of research that requires you to kill the animals at the end, be it because you've ruined their lives to the point that it's the more humane decision or because "it's just what you do", then you don't give a single fucking shit about animal care ethics and you don't get to pretend otherwise.

I only work with humans but like I said I have a lot of colleagues former and current that use animals and you just can't throw this kind of stuff out there. Like I don't even eat animals, I really don't like the concept of animal suffering, but there really are not any alternatives for a lot of this research. You will pretty much have to go super vegan like McCartney's wife that died of cancer because she refused animal tested medicine to avoid the ethical dilemma involved with this. Animal testing is not something we can throw out without greatly diminishing our ability to do research, and yes you often have to sacrifice the animals.

I worked with human subjects when I did research at the University of Washington but I worked with many people who used animals and you go through a ton of animals in many of these studies. I never felt good about it but sadly I don't find 1500 animals to be very noteworthy. They breed a lot of animals onsite just for experiments. I only remember significant barriers for primates.

Thank you for doing a service to the world and serving as an example for why countries like my own (Japan) stomp out woke left-like mindsets as soon as they appear.

You sure you actually live in Japan, because a lot of media is incredibly "woke" here. I would say you see more LGBT, disability, etc. representation on TV in Japan on average than most countries. Shit I can't stop watching that lesbian drama about making food . That's the best thing on TV right now.
