And that's why it matters that Josh Johnson is the QB even though the Niners have 21 other talented starters

Yeah... QB can maybe be the least talented of the 22 starters but they have to at least not turn the ball over on the snap. Every play has a snap

I won't argue that Purdy wouldn't be more fun than Johnson but the main entertainment from watching the niners never came from the QB anyway

it's like Ray Lewis and Ed Reed with the Ravens... who cares who the QB was

I would like to see Bengals vs. Dolphins actually with both squads healthy. Their game this year was the second Tua concussion game with the fencing response... and then Bengals were also there for Hamlin of course so they've had a crazy year in that respect

we thought Mahomes vs. Allen might become the new Brady vs. Manning but it might turn out to be Mahomes vs. Burrow

I think we're at the point where there's no reason to restrict it to a duality anymore. And among everyone, Burrow is definitely gunning for that #1 spot and carrying himself as such.

Bengals are establishing a very good record against the Chiefs, Bills and Titans since he got there, especially if they win next week... if they get past their own division year to year, Burrow's anti-Bungles looking like a perennial force

Mahomes entered a pretty good situation, although he didn't play as a rookie. The Cowboys were really good Dak's rookie year, too.

For the purpose of the trivia I'm not counting "first year as a starter" like Mahomes, only actual rookie year.

Dak is an interesting one but he didn't have any receivers right? That's why they went and got Amari Cooper and then eventually drafted CeeDee. And I don't remember the defense being nearly that good although I think they did have the great O line at the time and got Zeke the same year.

Maybe Andrew Luck? trying to go through my memory...

edit: no, Luck had Reggie Wayne and a pretty good defense his first year, but they didn't get any RB for him for a while

Also, can anyone think of a rookie QB that has entered a better situation of skill players than Purdy has? Some people might (not me, but one could try to) argue that McCaffrey, Deebo and Kittle are all top 3 if not 1 at their position, and Aiyuk has been no slouch as a WR2. And then beyond the skill positions Purdy has Trent Williams & Mike McGlinchey at tackle and obviously on the other side of the ball Bosa, Warner, Greenlaw, Hufanga, etc... has there ever been a QB in his rookie year who's started games for a team with a better roster around them?

On paper the Eagles and 49ers rosters are really so absurd. Neither has any business losing. The Eagles secondary is one of the more remarkable groups I've seen in a while, and they have everybody back now... kinda rooting for that position group to go on a tear and just start blanking people.

Btw, I looked this up the other day, would anyone care to guess how many players from the Eagles super bowl win over the pats 5 years ago are on this current roster?

Based on what we've seen all year, is anyone (unbiased) picking anything other than Chiefs, Eagles, 49ers? Hard to imagine pick'em doesn't just come down to Bengals/Bills and tiebreakers

Eagles and 49ers have clearly been the two best NFC teams, as long as Hurts is approximately what he was prior to sitting with the injury

Particularly brutal for the Ravens D as fully healthy they are a very scary unit and they completely did their job. Bengals O couldn't get off 17 points and Ravens were in the position to get field goals twice when they already had 17

Would not have been game sealing. If the Jaguars get the stop, they still have a timeout, almost 2 minutes, and are down 5 (assuming a good kick)

Fair enough, but if you believe in momentum, that would've gone a long way, inspired the defense for the final stand, etc.

Jags gonna Jag...but Chargers also gonna Charger.

This is now a game again.

For those who understand the lingo, there are really no better words than this. But I want to put words to some of the smaller things that made all that happen, because as much as firing Staley is easy and clear and I don't even necessarily disagree, absolutely no one on the Chargers comes out clean:

1) Bosa loses temper and is ejected (regardless of if penalties were warranted)
2) Derwin James burned on the Zay Jones touchdown
3) Asante Samuel Jr. gives up the edge on 4th and 1 for the game winning FG
4) Van Noy (in for Bosa?) drops game-sealing INT on game winning FG drive
5) defense in general gives up 2nd half opening drive TD and a 4th quarter TD drive that involved DPI on a 2nd & 19, a Staley failed challenge, and the first Bosa penalty that led to the 2PC
6) offense cannot keep the ball for time of possession
7) kicker missed a FG

Football is a game we love, and we all know it is dangerous. Sadly, we, america, have not figured out how to have the game we love without the danger. We always rely on the game and the safeguards to succeed over the danger, and it almost always does.

But last night it didn't. Now we can only wait, and hope and pray for the best, and in the future continue to mold the rules of the game and the mindset of players to minimize the risk. But the risk will never be gone completely. The tackle/hit that caused this wasn't even bad or illegal. It's just a freak result of bodies colliding. And that will always be a part of the game.

Undoubtedly this will make calls to end the sport louder and more discernible, especially at a youth level, and with youth participation. But it is a unique game that is currently a bedrock of american culture and many, many will work for it to persist. Could it end up going the way of boxing and eventually recede from the center of the sports stage? Perhaps. But I don't think american society is ready to do that, even with an incident like this, which deserves to and rightly is overshadowing the sport itself until further notice.

There is a lot of ugly context to this - playoff considerations, fantasy championships, who called the game off, who wanted to resume playing, who was putting money over humanity, who is shouting lies about why it happened. I urge everyone to put all of that aside for the moment. Feel your humanity for a while. And tell your loved ones that you love them.

what I've learned from this is that I know the teams that I don't know how to predict.

small suggestion here, if this continues next year, my vote would be that the rule just becomes "you must pick each team at least once before the year is over" and "you can't pick a team more than twice"
