The consensus I've gotten over the years is as long as you try to make the costume look like the characters to a good degree, people will like it despite the person not looking exactly like the character. I think the costume is the important part of it. My first cosplay I've ever done was Killua from Hunter x Hunter. I was really nervous because I'm a black man cosplaying a pale white kid. Despite the differences of how we looked, people liked it due to the detail of the costume. The scene is pretty inclusive and you can tell when somebody puts effort into it.
