Ehhhh, that's from my high school days... and it got *waaaaaaaaaay* overplayed on the radio. I haven't been able to stand the song since then.

And I don't think you'll be able to get these out of your head:

https://edition.cnn.com/2023/06/19/tech/reddit-hackers-demands-api/index.html

Reddits month may be going from bad to worse.

Hackers from the BlackCat ransomware gang, also known as ALPHV, are threatening to leak 80 gigabytes of confidential data from Reddit that they claim to have stolen during a February breach, according to a post from the group on the dark web, which was reviewed by CNN and an independent cybersecurity expert.

In their post, the hackers claim they first demanded a $4.5 million payout for the deletion of the data and our silence in April. After receiving no response, the group said it followed up on Friday with an additional demand: Reddit should withdraw a controversial new pricing policy that has sparked a protest from some of the platforms most influential users.

Reddit CTO Chris Slowe previously posted about a security incident that took place in early February. In the post, Slowe said the companys systems were hacked as a result of a sophisticated and highly-targeted phishing attack, with hackers accessing some internal documents, code, and some internal business systems. Only employee data was accessed, according to the post.

A Reddit spokesperson confirmed to CNN on Monday that BlackCats post relates to the February incident. The spokesperson reiterated that no user data was accessed, but declined to comment beyond that.

More than 6,000 Reddit forums went dark last Monday in what was supposed to be a two-day protest over the companys plan to begin charging steep fees for some third party apps to access its platform. A week later, more than 3,500 Reddit forums remain dark.

While the ransom note appears to support the protestors cause, some experts are skeptical of BlackCats actual motives.

I suspect that ALPHV doesnt actually care about the API pricing. They simply want future victims to see how much ongoing harm they can cause to increase the likelihood of them deciding that payment is the least painful option, said Brett Callow, threat analyst at cybersecurity firm Emsisoft, who reviewed the post on the dark web.

BlackCat, for its part, said it does not expect Reddit to meet its demands.

We are very confident that Reddit will not pay for its data, the group wrote in the post on the dark web. We expect to leak the data.

With email billing, companies send you your bills at any damn time they please. You'll crawl into bed at 2300 and read an ebook for a bit...

And now you have the choice of paying it right then and there... or trying to get to sleep knowing that you need to take care of it the following day.

People who don't like *insert entire culture's food here* tend to be picky eaters. Just a failure of parenting on the part of your parents. Its especially bad if you don't like Korean food though as they have incredibly diverse offerings that are particularly appealing to an American palette.

I spent 8 years in South Korea (Seoul and Songtan).

I've tried most everything they have, including the boshintong (dog soup) and the tokkitong (rabbit soup).

And nothing really stands out as an "OMG! WOWSERS, THIS IS SUPER AWESOME!!!"

Bulgogi? It's barbeque beef/pork/chicken. It's good, but not great.

Kalbi? It's barbeque beef/pork/chicken with bones still in it, cut sideways, so you can't easily pull the bones out. Oh BTW, you need to eat it with chopsticks and good luck getting the bones out that way.

Sullongtong? Oxtail soup is really tasty, but at the end of the day... it's still just a soup.
Kumtong? See above.

Kimchiggigae? Sokay. Kimchi stew is alright. But again, it's not something to write home about.

J a pchae? Okay, that's legitimately really, really good.

Budaeggigae? Blech.

---

And I could write up another 50+ dishes if you'd like. I spent three years eating *at least* three lunches and dinners at South Korean army (or air force) chow halls every week.

The fish head soup as a Monday morning hangover cure is real.

Eh, I don't like Korean food. There are a few dishes that are good, but on the whole, it's pretty nasty stuff.

Especially samgyupsal.

I know everyone that I've known whose had it, loved it. But it's just pork fat. It's not even streaked with meat, like bacon.

And chewing pure fat is an exercise in frustration, as it doesn't break down into smaller chunks. That, and it just tastes like fat, ie: it has no flavor for fat to enhance.

Blech.

Everything about how smartphones look today could change.

https://www.androidauthority.com/replaceable-batteries-eu-2023-3335711/

TL;DR
  • European Parliament passed a change to a law that will force replaceable batteries on all gadgets, including smartphones.
  • By law, phones in the EU by 2027 will need to have batteries you can replace with no tools, which means no adhesives.
  • This could fundamentally change how smartphones are designed.

Way back in the day, most smartphones had batteries you could easily swap. You didnt need tools or a heat gun, either: you could just pop off the back, take the battery out, put in a new one, and go on with your day. It was common to see people with a spare battery in their pockets. Nowadays, thanks to most smartphones being two chunks of glass glued to a metal frame, this is no longer possible.

However, European Parliament may have just brought those days back. In a sweeping new change to a previous law, MEPs voted 587 to nine to force all gadgets to have easily replaceable batteries. When we say easily, we mean it: MEPs say this should not require special tools, which means no adhesives.

Without adhesives, OEMs from Apple to Google to Samsung will need to drastically change how they design phones. The glass sandwich design method would almost certainly need to stop unless companies could devise a way to keep the parts connected without adhesives.

Obviously, this law only affects the EU, but OEMs wouldnt likely design phones specifically for the EU. Just like with an EU law forcing Apple to bring USB-C to iPhones (which will likely happen this year), this EU-specific law will have ripples across the world.

Thankfully, OEMs dont need to change anything quite yet. The law goes into effect 3.5 years from today, which means early 2027. Its possible the EU could extend that time limit, though, should OEMs need more time.

The law approved today is mostly an attempt to cut down on environmental waste. The MEPs make it very clear that they want the tech industry to be more responsible about batteries. It also includes statutes related to recyclability, minimum levels of precious metals that must be obtained from recycled batteries, and stricter waste collection targets.
