TopicWhat was the most disappointing video game to you.
Mega_Mana

Twilight Princess. It was the one of the first games I got with the Wii (alongside Marvel Ultimate Alliance and something else I forget), and it was first Wii game I returned to Gamestop a few weeks later. There were two major disappointments, and a whole bunch of minor ones.

First and foremost was the introduction stage. There is absolutely zero reason for townlife Link to be as long and as necessary to progress as it is. It is an okay chore the first time through, getting a handle on the controls, learning old and new things to know in this game, and meet a bunch of characters who seem like they would be a strong supporting cast in the future. The second time through, it is an hour of doing the most basic shit you've already done to get items you'll never equip again soon after, catching the most annoying cat ever, and talking to a bunch of people you never need interact with again after the second dungeon. It is an unskippable chore that makes wanting to boot up a new file and replay the game a major obstacle at the outset.

The second disappointment is the map. Those first two or three dungeons and their surrounding lands are so relatively full and yet such a small portion of the overall map that the hype was real for what else was out there, especially those big wide expanses to the north. Turns out it's just a snowboarding track and a river rafting track and that's the 40% of map space that was still fogged out. Not to mention how empty a lot of the places feel, despite a lot of collectibles.

There are definitely great aspects to the game. The artstyle is still one of the best in the series, Wolf Link and Midna is an incredible partnership, Twilight is appropriately gloomy and stressing, a majority of the dungeons and bosses are the best the series has to offer, and the final events are some of the most desperate and thrilling in the series (despite usurping the plot almost out of nowhere).

But empty fields that are far too large for what they contain, poe hunting, blips of character interaction, an inventory filled with near useless items outside their respective dungeons, tons of weird lore that seemed made more for hype trailers than any gameplay impact, a dearth of reasons to explore places (oh great, another cave with a chest of rupees), and oh god the rupees. YES I KNOW BLUE IS WORTH 5. YOU DON'T NEED TO TELL ME EVERY TIME I RELOAD MY SAVE.

Oh, and the fishing was really good, really chill. I do think I should've kept the game sometimes exclusively to fish.

Other disappointments:
- Justice League Task Force (SNES) both in terms of being an awful game and not any of the games I asked for for Christmas.
- Everquest II (PC) felt extremely pay-to-play from the outset and lacked so much charm from the original. I just remember a really bland beach, ugly character models, a lack of pockets, and a whole host of little red flags that put me off immediately.

the twists were honestly the disappointing thing because yeah that's what the name shyamalan is synonymous with but then so many are complete nothing

pretty much manny's list of the seen stuff, although I didn't really care about Signs even, I think I said it in the last topic but suspect watching Nope before it spoiled me on the the concept

I'd also bump Old down into an awful tier because it really didn't bother making you care about the characters... rapper named Mid-Sized Sedan tho holy shit

The Village was alright, I watched that one with my mom since she loved the atmosphere of the period. The twists were decent, at least to me in hindsight after seeing more of Shyamalan's work.

The Happening can indeed be one of those So Bad It's Good movies, I'm not sure if I'd fully mean it myself but it was at least entertaining to watch the weird ass hot dog dude and Marky Mark's ridiculous attempt to act as a science guy (to be fair the script absolutely does not help)

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3nB7L5N57Qk

this cracks me up so much

Unexpected nickname, and an extreme surprise of feels towards it and I don't know why. Good feels. Degrassi feels?

Nope >>>>>> Signs. The sheer anxiety of the slowly isolating and condensing and retreat of the characters is still such a tangible and palpable sense memory that a lot of the plot details and twists don't matter much to me. Phoenix, Breslin, and Culkin sitting on the couch with tinfoil hats watching the Brazilian broadcast is such masterful intensity. Like, the video easily come off as silly, but the fear the characters exude is spine-chilling. I go back-and-forth between good and okay on it, but the fact that it still affects me like it does leads me to good (meanwhile, Unbreakable I recognize as a good movie but it has nowhere near the amount of reactive capture).

Old & The Village are in the same tier for opposing reasons. The Village is a decent movie, but it bores me and I don't care. Old is a terrible movie, but there are parts that intrigue and terrify me and haunt me, and I think it helps that I watched it piecemeal in completely random order while working, so there were a lot of mysteries to my experience that didn't really exist watching beginning-to-end, and a lot of moments (Ken Jeong's death) that seemed more important and terrifying than they were otherwise. It's not farcically bad like The Happening, it's got way too many nothing characters, stupid dialogue, and very silly plot points to be good, and it just exists.

"What? Nooo" is love.

I love your lists! Thank you for your time and amazing effort.

Honorable mentions:
- Ghostwriter: Gooey Gus - Traumatic creature who boils and seals the Ghostwriter team in purple goo, somehow scarier (IMO) than anything from Goosebumps or Are You Afraid of the Dark

- Power Rangers Turbo - While the Peace Conference is so much worse, Turbo is so much dumber. Between Rocky leaving the cast at the outset, Justin becoming the new blue ranger, Bulk & Skull as chimpanzees or invisible for the entire first half, Alpha 6, the producers getting rid of Tanya and Adam when Tommy and Kat were leaving despite them wanting/planning to stay on, and Divatox/Demitria stuff. Just all around a bad, bad start to a season that ended up being really good once the new rangers settled in (and helped make In Space one of the best seasons ever).

I want to say All Grown Up becoming a series, but that episode of Rugrats was an event and despite it not being good made complete sense to do.

something that likely won't make this list since the show is a bit obscure, but the main character of So Weird not returning for season 3 was a huge letdown for fans of the show. Disney ended up making a third season centered around a different main character, but they dropped the overarching storyline that made the show so great in exchange for more episodic content. They also made it more colorful and less dark than the first two seasons, something the show creators and Disney were constantly at odds about during the airing of the show. While likely lost to history to most people, So Weird was a great sci-fi Disney show that unfortunately never got the final season it deserved.

I always confused Big Bad Beetleborgs and Masked Rider (which was a year earlier) won't be surprised if that shows up on the list.

Helpful distinction:

Masked Rider had a three-episode soft launch crossover at the beginning of Power Rangers Season 3.

Beetleborg costumes were cameo villains riding horses on the moon in Forever Red.

But "So Random" gave us Shayne and Damien! And also Matthew Scott Montgomery and more Allisyn!

#70: Big Bad Beetleborgs

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/4/2/1/AAAG8cAAEoAF.jpg
It's like Jay Leno had sex with Smurfette. The only reason I know that they didn't is because that would've made the list too.

In 1996, Haim Saban was riding high off the success of Power Rangers, and even though VR Troopers AND Masked Rider had failed, he was gonna try again, dammit! And so, once again, he spliced a bunch of Japanese sentai footage together with new American filmed footage and we got... Big Bad Beetleborgs, in which three comic book obsessed kids go to a haunted mansion and get beetle themed superpowers from a bunch of monsters and some blue guy named Flabber. Flabber is the source of much of the show's comic relief and, as mentioned before, he looks like a blue Jay Leno. The action itself was typical Power Rangers-style fare but without the cool music and with generic looking vehicles rather than cool robots. The villains were totally forgettable, save for maybe one guy in season two (which was called Beetleborgs Metallix and the theme song was basically the original show's theme song but with "Big Bad Beetleborgs" replaced with "Beetleborgs Metallix") who looked like what Beetlejuice might've looked like before he died. The thing about Big Bad Beetleborgs is that it's probably the wackiest of the post-Power Rangers sentai footage ideas to date, and yet it ended up being one of the most successful... which, again, we're sort of grading on a curve because Masked Rider and VR Troopers both bombed. Regardless of this show's middling level of success, there's no way this concept could've been made by someone who wasn't under the influence of some kind of drugs. The mansion/Flabber scenes were exceptionally cringeworthy, and apart from the show's annoying theme song and Flabber, there's nothing memorable here to speak of. Big Bad Beetleborgs represents the post-Power Rangers sentai adaptation era at its absolute dumbest, and proved that Power Rangers truly did catch lightning in a bottle.

I didn't mind Beetleborgs so much. It's largely forgettable and the recasting of the red beetleborg between seasons threw me off, but it felt like a precursor to FOX/ABC Family style of shows to come like Big Wolf on Campus*. I think the monster stuff was the best part with the Beetleborgs shuffled in to sell toys/the show. It wasn't a great show, and I don't think it should be this high up the list.

*I tried to think of other shows, but somehow unlocked the memory of the Flash Forward theme (the Ben Foster & Jewel Staite show, not the post-Lost copycat**) and it's driven all other thoughts out.

I am also thankful I've got this nostalgic harmonica ditty playing on loop and not "Troopers. Three. Virtual Reality."

**Wow, a write-up about a trend-riding failed show and my brain takes a long roundabout to another trend-riding failed show. Lost & Power Rangers can both claim fame to having some legitimately terrible coattail riders. Invasion, Superhuman Samurai Syber Squad, The Event, Tattooed Teenage Alien Fighters from Beverly Hills, Alcatraz, Mystic Knights of Tir Na Nog, Revolution.

NSNA doesnt even count and is the worst Bond movie.

Neither does Casino '67, which is objectively the worst ever.

NSNA is a better Connery Bond movie than Thunderball. Thunderball has a better theme song, Domino is better, and the water scenes would be better... if they didn't drag on forrreeeevvveeer.

Never Say Never Again is better paced, the villains are more well-acted and positioned, and has hokey 80s technology somehow adding to it rather than torpedoing it completely.

Thunderball is completely forgettable until the water scenes, and then water scenes drag out infinitely longer than Tom Jones holds that final note until he passed out.

On The Man With the Golden Gun, mostly terrible memories of the worst villain lair. It's a bad carnival laser tag lair manned entirely by a single solitary stumblebum. It has the most inept and clumsy Bond girl. There's a random karate school. There's a huge build up to an infiltration using a third nipple that drowns immediately. If it didn't have Christopher Lee, there would be almost nothing redeeming. Nick Nack was hit-and-miss.

At least Lee and Ekland had a much better film with The Wicker Man a year earlier.

Edit: And I just remembered J.W. Pepper was here again. The loop-de-loop is great despite his presence.

On Moonraker, I really enjoyed it. The story was off-kilter, the final phase of the movie was weird, and Drax was kind of a nothing... but scenery and set design are imprinted in my brain. The cable car chase high in the mountains was so good. Drax's lair is just this towering imposing set... used for like a single scene.

I need to watch it again.

Bond opinions for each Bond

Connery: Goldfinger > From Russia With Love > Dr. No > You Only Live Twice > Never Say Never Again > Thunderball > Diamonds Are Forever

Moore: The Spy Who Loved Me > Moonraker > A View to a Kill > Octo***** > For Your Eyes Only > Live and Let Die > The Man With the Golden Gun

Dalton: The Living Daylights > Licence to Kill

Brosnan: Goldeneye >> the rest (should try and watch them again, but just really don't want to - TND puts me to sleep, DAD rankles my brain, and TWiNE I've seen three times and recall ZERO things)

Craig: Casino Royale > No Time to Die > Skyfall > Quantum of Solace > Spectre

One-off: OHMSS >>>>>>>>> Casino Royale '67
