People are also forgetting that this isnt rent a house vs. buy a house, this is rent somewhere to live vs. buying a house. I dont even want to think about the hassles of buying some land and then building a place to live there, even if it is smaller or less expensive than the average house.

If you rent you can get a small apartment and be just fine. If the average mortgage in an area is a lot more than the average cost of a small apartment, why would I care about not technically getting the best value for my money? Stores use that mentality to get you to spend more during sales.

Buying/selling houses isnt that easy, its a really tedious process and there are so many extra costs.

If you can afford 2 houses at once I guess you could do that

I would say for many of us it is our job that has us anchored to the area so we just end up buying a house since we aren't going to be jumping around anyway.

Yes I brushed off being anchored to an area because of a job but that is probably true for a lot of people.

Maybe you guys arent that interested in moving around and seeing/experiencing different areas. Thats up to you. But if you buy a house you are pretty much anchored to the area its in. Yes you can sell your house and move somewhere else but that is much easier said than done.

Malls were always soulless consumption centers. Just because more people went to them out of convenience or because of lack of alternatives, doesn't make them a sacred institution. I went to one a couple of weeks ago and there were quite a few people there. It wasn't packed, but the experience is better when it isn't packed anyway.
