I watched last year, unfortunately, and I'm surprised to see people talking about it. Here and in other places. I decided to never watch that show again given how it went through three strikes in the second hour of the finale alone (lying about the prize money, what they did to Desi and Angela [them being the two hottest women on the season had nothing to do with my ire], and the worst, most unlikable winner ever). I keep wondering if people have a short-term memory, but I know Inviso does not, so... explain.

The first season was a fun watch up until the finale. It's one of those journey-over-destination things. Plus, I've watched five seasons of Tough As Nails, and even last season of Challenge USA was more interesting than that. This season is interesting, and I have a vested interest in the successes and failures of the players, even if I hate a lot of people.

But I wanna talk about the challenge. Specifically, how much Dusty sucks. Josh? Sure, he's obnoxious, but he's effectively a challenge vet himself. But Dusty, you're a fucking NEWBIE, and you're one of only TWO Amazing Racers, and you can't even stick with a plan that will protect your Amazing Race buddy from elimination? The fuck? I guess he's too busy fawning over Bananas.

Well if you're gonna do an art snobs-only list, you need to do a furry-only list.

Marowak, Exeggutor and Raichu far and away improve the most of their originals.

Also, on the subject of Marona as the runner-up (since I was the low ranking)...it was just a bit dull for most of it. They all made the top seven, but I feel like Big Bad Fox, House, and Marona had the same problem where they weren't necessarily coherent narratives so much as a series of self-contained stories, and when you do that, you run the risk of one or more stories falling flat. This goes beyond those three films, BTW...whenever we've done anthology-style films in the past, there have always been one or two (or everything, as Horror goes) stories that just don't work, but they're still a large enough portion of the film that they wind up dragging it down.

With Marona, it's the most coherent narrative of the three from this list, since Marona is still the primary character...but it's very jarring to go from "Here's a brief story about my life as a puppy. Here's a brief story about my life with a performer. Here's a brief story about my life with a nice guy and his bitchy girlfriend. Here's a brief story about my final owner." And the issue I had is that I just didn't care about the first three stories, really. The performer section felt especially toothless to me. Marona dealing with the aging mother, and with the bitchy girlfriend was a bit better. But the film only really got me at the end, and even then, it wasn't even Marona so much as the melancholy of the bitter old man learning to love this dog, only for his granddaughter to get bored and become a bratty teenager.

It just wasn't my cup of tea, and I hope my opinion at least carries some water, given I'm the lone holdout among this ranking's four-man furry brigade in terms of my opinions on this film.

Oh fuck off Vis. Belle is 100000x better as a song than Madrigal. I'd even say the opening song left such a sour taste in my mouth that it took at least 20-30 more minutes of watching to recover from.

But while yes, Belle is a CATCHIER song (in large part because it's written in a way meant to be more memorable, and because let's be honest here...it's the song from a lot of our childhoods), it's not a BETTER song in terms of its contribution to the film overall.

Beauty and the Beast has two songs in which the townsfolk stop what they're doing to give a rousing rendition in which they describe a character. With Gaston, it makes sense: he's the town hero, every loves him, and in any other movie, he'd be the big, heroic warrior. With Belle...the character is such a basic and average person who only stands out because of how ignorant and backwoods her village is portrayed. By modern standards, she is an average woman, possibly a Disney fan in her own right. So having the entire town start singing a song about how unique and different she is...for reading books and just generally not conforming to societal standards of womanhood? It bolsters a Mary Sue image, despite the fact that there's really nothing THAT special about the character.

Meanwhile, Encanto's opening song is specifically about a magical family that used their magic to help the surrounding town grow and prosper. It makes sense for this song to exist. And unlike Belle, which is sung out of nowhere by the whole village, The Family Madrigal is sung by the main character, effectively conveying the same kind of descriptive information as Belle, but from the perspective of someone who has a reason to convey it. And in this song, you get not only character introductions to the entire family (and the house itself is introduced as a character), but you also get a lot of show-don't-tell moments for the characters in general. That subtle waver in Mirabel's voice when she describes Isabella as perfect...that plays into Mirabel's jealousy towards her sister. The constantly badgering about Mirabel's powers, while Mirabel gets diverting and deflecting (to the point where the song starts to get frantic and overwhelming) all play into Mirabel's personality as well. She loves her family and she's proud to be part of them, but her lack of power has caused her to feel outcast in a way, and dwelling on that lack of power hurts her emotionally.

The Family Madrigal is just a bouncy and upbeat song, and it does a great job of giving an introduction that both tells the audience information directly, but also offers some foreshadowing by way of using lyrics and visuals and even intonations to convey deeper meanings.

I think I said something similar about Puss In Boots, how that hero song of his does a great job of demonstrating his personality to the audience without having to be right on the nose about it.

I'm just saying, you cannot compare a movie with a 13%/43% rating (The Nut Job) to a movie with an 88%/93% rating (The Bad Guys) just because they're both heists cartoons.

Also, what's with everyone hating on Awkwafina? She's fine in this, and in most things.

I mean, if you know me at all, my ranking should be relatively obvious aside from the order of the top two.
