I can't say I really care about 30 or 60 FPS most times. Some action games need to run at 60, and I'll pick 60 if given the option ala Spiderman, but its not that big of a deal overall most times.

Yeah I gotta agree, 6.1 was great. Parts of 5.2 were really, really great but a lot of it was repetitive.
Need to see the rest of the story before I rank it, though, because it's definitely meant to be a complete narrative and not 'basically two actual story chapters that took one Lostbelt' like 5 was.

Some bosses can feel like one-hit combos kill you so there's not much give and take there other than "either get better or get more hp". And people who aren't good enough, myself included, can feel like that forces them to put the game down.
This is the biggest issue I have with Dark Souls games. Bosses are literally trial and error until you've seen everything they can do.

Woops didn't know the boss had that flame breath attack, guess I'm dead and need to spend several minutes running back to the boss to try again. And even then a lot of times you miss the tells because a lot of bosses are huge and you're up their asshole with the camera, so realistically it takes more than one time seeing an attack to internalize when you need to dodge.

There's very little ability to get good DURING the fight. You have an opportunity to get good AFTER the fight. This never feels good to me. I've almost never clutched a fight first or even second time in the bits of Dark Souls/Bloodborne I've tried.

It's rote retrying until you get it down and that's the worst kind of learning there is both in video games and real life.

It's not just B8, though. You can go on the Zelda board, reddit, twitter, etc and find a sizeable portion of people that do not enjoy the game.

When a game has a noticeable presence of people that dislike it, yes that IS divisive. And yes, Zelda games do tend to be divisive in general.

Breath of the Wild is divisive among the core fanbase because it's a game made of padding, and if you're on board you'll love it but if you're not you'll be left legitimately confused about why anyone likes it.

I think you hit on a good point and probably why I like Tears of the Kingdom more (even if not a huge amount), honestly. With TotK they integrated the abilities more with the 'padding', and turned traversal from just a chore to a puzzle you have to solve. "Can I use a wing zonai device here or do I need a balloon? Should I use rockets on this and not have some later? Lets try to get the physics working right on this thing. Actually, maybe I should take a quick look around for a rock to recall up this mountain, or a cave to ascend through..."

It makes a decent bit of difference, imo. There's just more to think about. They made the padding itself more fun. Outside of glitches, most of BotW's abilities and items didn't impact traversal, only really stasis and a few oddballs like octorok balloons, and those are pretty pretty linear, one note things unless you get SUPER creative.

I hope the lesson they learn from TotK is that making the process of getting somewhere in an open world fun is just as important as making the destinations fun and build on that. It doesn't have to copy TotK in execution, but just be a core design principle they try to replicate for future open world games.

They're not.

They're generally pretty consistently pretty good but not great by any means. If you had asked back around the Majora's Mask era I might have agreed it was consistently great, though. Nearly everything after that has been solidly good except the DS games (also Spirit Tracks is definitely better than Phantom Hourglass) and a few other random stinkers here and there. A Link Between Worlds probably comes closest to being great again. Maybe WW after the rerelease fixed most of the issues it had.

To be clear though (and I'm just providing extra info, not commenting one way or another on your own personal issue, colliding) like 95% of everything in the main story is soloable now. It's only the Stormblood patch dungeons and every (as in, not limited to Stormblood, but every) Trial AKA big story boss fights that aren't.

It's optional soloable, for the record, in case TC has any feelings on it one way or the other.

You complained about how you 'don't get to have fun' unless you do all those things first. The fact is, 99% of the game isn't and doesn't require grinding for materials. Only upgrading the clothes (and a few quests) do, which is 100% unnecessary for gameplay because 2 with maybe a couple 3 star upgrades is enough. My point with saying how far I was is that I've put about 50-60 hours into the game with zero grinding, only progression and normal exploration, and never have had an issue doing whatever I want except near the beginning.

I can build "flying drones and monster trucks with automated turrets" whenever I want. I have like 500 zonaite for autobuild and 20-40 of nearly every zonaite device with zero grinding and I use them fairly regularly. I have almost 4 entire battery gauges if somehow my inventory of devices runs out of buildable batteries.

How many hours are you going to spend building random devices that this isn't enough? Why would you possibly need to grind more than this?

The whole thing you mentioned sounds like "you" problem with being impatient more than anything else. Of course you are going to get more access to things as the game goes and not right away- that's how video games work! The game is not stingy with materials in the least.

Yeah I've not grinded a single thing and am doing completely fine. There is no need to max out armor. Enemies aside from bosses feel fine with 2 upgrades and if I'm really struggling I can just pop some +defense food.

And I've almost never run out of any kind of zonai related resource to the point I needed to actively stop using them. I say almost because it did happen twice early on, but now that I'm nearing endgame (3 dungeons done with 100 shrines completed) it's been a complete non-issue for days.

What're stabilizers useful for?
Flinging yourself with a platform like the one shrine or making, well, stable vehicles easier. You can backload fans and rockets on wing devices or boats much easier with stabilizers, just put one on the front and no matter how much you put on one the back it'll even out.

I use them for flinging more though.

Stakes are the one thing I feel like should be more useful but I don't find ways to use them often.

It probably speaks more to do with Arcades finally dying in Japan like they did in the rest of the world than FGO Arcade itself doing poorly, because it supposedly was top 3 most played Arcade cabinets.

Finished my second dungeon, the Gerudo one. I enjoyed it a lot more than the Rito one. Felt a bit more like a proper dungeon and not just a collection of unconnected tasks in the same place.

What makes a great dungeon for me is how interconnected its rooms and puzzles are. The best Zelda dungeons are ones where you have to really involve the layout of the dungeon itself in the puzzles by doing things in one room to affect others, and this one had a bit of that with the light puzzles.

I still don't think it was amazing by any means, but it was certainly better than all of the Divine Beasts and the Rito dungeon.

Breath of the Wild is an INCREDIBLY front loaded game imo. The first 10-15 hours I played it were fantastic. Then the game never changes at all, and I only really had specific shrines to look forward to and a full like 1/3rd of those are boring tests of strength. Which isn't to say I was totally bored the rest of the playthrough, because a lot of those shrines ARE quite fun.

And the Divine Beasts were alright, but they all had the same aesthetic and the actual mechanics of them were kind of middling at best in comparison to a lot of Zelda dungeons. Hyrule Castle is cool and I've come around on that particular part of the game a lot since but the first time I played the game I saved it for last and was just so over the game at that point I just climbed to Ganon's room and skipped it :\

The overall story and characters were quite good, though, but I agree with the 'under utilized' comment. Especially the descendants. I couldn't even tell you the Rito descendant guy's name he's so forgettable and uninteresting. At least I remember Riju and Yunobo (and obviously Sidon steals every scene he's in).

Tears of the Kingdom so far (played a few hours) plays and feels incredible, I just hope they are able to keep it feeling fresh the whole time. It's too early for me to really give more of an impression than that because it could very well have the same issues.

EDIT: Also, I forgot to mention BotW has another issue I could see TotK having for me, and this is a very 'me' problem in regards to my personality type. BotW gives you a TON of tools, but never gives you an actual reason to use them a lot of the time. Yeah I COULD set up crazy rube goldberg machine esque things to take out enemies, but why would I ever do that when hitting them with a sword is both more accessible and faster?

It's kind of the same problem I have with games like Minecraft. I don't particularly see a reason to build crazy big elaborate things when a smaller, functional one works just as well. Any time I've ever played Minecraft I build a small stone house and that's enough for me. I'll try to get myself to do big projects and then I'll just lose interest a portion through because what's the point of even doing it?
