#72: Worldwide Day Of Play

https://gamefaqs.gamespot.com/a/user_image/3/2/2/AAAG8cAAEn-i.jpg
Worldwide Day of playing Xbox, maybe.

From 2004 to 2019, Nickelodeon had a well-meaning but obviously short-sighted campaign in which they would cease showing their normal programming in favor of popping a message on screen encouraging kids to go outside and play. On the surface, this seemed fine: there's nothing wrong with a television network encouraging kids to get up and participate in physical activity. But... let's break this down for just a moment and you'll quickly realize where this campaign went horribly wrong. In a world where Cartoon Network and the Disney Channel exist, for example, kids can just change the channel. There are video games available as well, so... kids had a lot of options that didn't involve going outside. Parents have been trying to get kids to go outside for years, you think Nickelodeon's going to be able to do it? And, of course, there are kids who can't just go out and play. Kids with disabilities, kids forced to spend that Saturday in the hospital... imaging being a sick kid with cancer and just wanting to enjoy some Nickelodeon after chemo, and laying there in that bed and seeing a message telling you to go out and play. Nickelodeon actually once had a much more successful and fun campaign to encourage kids to get out into the world: The Big Help, a marathon in which Nick celebrities encouraged kids to volunteer their time with local charities. They had concerts and contests and top 10 countdowns and it was a day to look forward to every year, and it actually did lead to lots of kid-driven volunteer projects around the country. If you just turn off the TV, kids will look for something else to watch. The fact that it took Nickelodeon 16 years to figure this out is just sad, but it's taken them longer to correct their mistakes before, as we'll see later on in the list.

Feels like this would have been much more successful if they teamed up with other stations to also do this.

But if Cartoon network was still showing then this seems really short sighted

Good choice. I think it got away with it because none of the fetishes are explicit. It wasnt even Animaniac levels of innuendo, they were just plot points that some people had fetishes of.

Because of that, its kind of a catch 22 where to get mad at it you had to admit you understood inflation fetishes were a fetish, and I doubt any group wanted to do that. There werent any low hanging fruit to attack the show

There's an entire genre of people drawing skinny characters as fat and no one goes out of their way to bully those people in the same way this person was. Just the ultimate hypocrisy.

Well

I think that gets into making a character less traditional vs more traditional. Shipping a straight character gay is normal. Shipping a gay character straight when there already isnt very much lgbt representation can seem like bad taste. In that vein making traditional body types less traditional is whatever. I dont think that is where the hypocrisy is.

The hypocrisy is trying to make characters unreasonably sexy is also expected and everywhere which often includes massively changing body types, so changing a body type to more traditionally attractive shouldnt be a big deal at all.

Feels like if the artist had made the character naked and skinny it wouldnt have been a big deal which is ridiculously problematic on a host of levels when you think about it.

I think I'm through the "Jill section" i.e. the "volcano level"

Unless the game throws a massive curveball with her and she ends up betraying Clive as revenge for Rosaria's conquering of the Northern territories and being used as a vassal her whole life or something equally as wild, Jill is going to be inducted into the Hall of Fame for boring "main girls."

It's weird because there's potential here but the game seems to always play it safe with her. Who knows, maybe it's still building to something. She's getting some weak death flags at least but I get the feeling it's just going to end with Clive talking her power and "curing" her or something.

The end of that was pretty cool

But yeah dont think it was enough to make Jill especially interesting. She aint no Yuna

Why?

If someone was waiting on a jury decision when it came out all the evidence was falsified I'm pretty sure they would throw out the case immediately rather than wait for the jury. And they certainly wouldn't let a guilty verdict by that jury stand.

You would need to investigate if those allegations are true

In the same vein where a defense attorney doing their job badly and not submitting evidence doesn't immediately change the outcome if the other party doesn't submit a legal affront to the evidence then they are acknowledging they don't have a concern.

Law is very structured

I don't think this is a reverse racism situation (which are usually stupid)

Rather the group primarily hurt by affirmative action are Asians so it's just regular old racism.

Also those stats about black enrollment roll over the pandemic. My guess is the pandemic making everything harder influence that tremendously

I mean the case for Affirmative Action is obvious, but I will just remind plum that majority opinion has not ever and should not ever be the basis of specific policy because most people dont actually know what theyre talking about. Especially in cases like this where its so easy to alter opinion based on phrasing and detail provided.

While this is true, the last thing you want to do is to make a strong stand against the majority on a topic that is ancillary to your overall goal.

If we get public education gutted entirely for instance because the far right runs against affirmative action and morons go along with it, it is bad for everyone.

I don't think you understand white privilege or institutional racism. Are you from Florida or something?

White privilege isn't the problem here. The problem is that instead of addressing privilege and identifying ways to diversify the student body universities have taken the easy racist way out

Economic privilege is infinitely more important to address but schools are still taking bribes from rich people and discriminating against poor Asians

This forcrd them to either fix the problem or go mask off and admit they don't actually care about a diverse student body if it hurts their income

Affirmative action is dead.

Universities are going to have to actually try to come up with alternative acceptance criteria instead of just giving handicaps depending on race which really should be a good thing for everyone if their goal actually is diversity.

Go fight a gleeok in totk, then fight an eikon in ff16. Totk requires cunning, creativity, and skill, while ff16 leans heavily on style over substance. Like, totk has all these robust systems in place for the player to go crazy with, while ff16s rpg systems are all very surface level.

Dont get me wrong - FF16 is pretty great, and im enjoying it but be real.
