Soccer balls were initially used for basketball, and they worked fine with the original rules as there was no dribbling. It was more of a rugby like game, running with the ball and mayhem on the court. To reduce bloodshed, running was eliminated, passing and dribbling were then the only ways to move the ball. Naismith, the creator of basketball, worked with Spalding to create a ball that worked with the evolving rules, something about the same size as a soccer ball, that bounced better on a hardwood gym floor.

And early basketballs were thrown into a basket, and every time someone scores, the game is paused while a person has to climb the ladder to retrieve the ball.

Speaking of which, the first American TV show to be imported to China was The Man from Atlantis, starring Bobby Ewing. It flopped in the US and lasted only one season, but it was phenomenal in China and Patrick Duffy became a star there without him knowing.

Hitler and the Nazis are also not well-liked here. During that time, Korea was occupied and dealing with Japanese atrocities. Hitler being allied with them at that time (plus the Holocaust is taught in their textbooks) means I'm never seeing my students even attempt edgy Hitler or Nazi jokes.

Seems like the countries and regions that were more brutalized by the Japanese invasion, such as China and Korea, tend to be less tolerant of either Nazi or Imperial Japanese symbolism. In contrast, Thailand's government during WW2 signed a treaty with the Japanese Empire, but managed to maintain control most of their government and military.

Taiwan also seems to view the period of Japanese colonization more favorably, as it was a backwater province under Qing China rule, but the Japanese colonizers pretty much created the industries there. There was also an incident a couple of years ago where a school held a mock Nazi rally that got so much international backlash that the principal resigned.
