Soccer balls were initially used for basketball, and they worked fine with the original rules as there was no dribbling. It was more of a rugby like game, running with the ball and mayhem on the court. To reduce bloodshed, running was eliminated, passing and dribbling were then the only ways to move the ball. Naismith, the creator of basketball, worked with Spalding to create a ball that worked with the evolving rules, something about the same size as a soccer ball, that bounced better on a hardwood gym floor.

And early basketballs were thrown into a basket, and every time someone scores, the game is paused while a person has to climb the ladder to retrieve the ball.

I recently requested a name change on my account. I used to be "indica" but felt I grew out of that name a long time ago.

Here's a fun fact: Ketchup used to not have tomatoes at all and was actually a fish sauce. The word originally comes from the Malay word kecap which then becomes the Chinese (Hokkien) word k-chiap: "brine of pickled fish or shellfish"

Interestingly, tea and chai all came from Chinese pronunciations. Tea comes from the Malay word teh, which itself came from the southern Chinese word te. Chai comes from the northern Chinese word cha, and changed through trading with Central and South Asia.

The Rifleman was one of the few Western World shows allowed on Soviet television as Leonid Brezhnev, the then-leader of the Soviet Union was a huge fan of the show, and was friends with Connors. Connors wanted to attend Brezhnev's funeral in 1982, but the US government refused the request.

Speaking of which, the first American TV show to be imported to China was The Man from Atlantis, starring Bobby Ewing. It flopped in the US and lasted only one season, but it was phenomenal in China and Patrick Duffy became a star there without him knowing.

Another popular US TV show there was Hunter, starring Fred Dryer, who was still widely recognized there a decade after the show ended.

South Koreans know who Hitler and the Nazis were. They learn about WW2 in early middle school.

Hitler and the Nazis are also not well-liked here. During that time, Korea was occupied and dealing with Japanese atrocities. Hitler being allied with them at that time (plus the Holocaust is taught in their textbooks) means I'm never seeing my students even attempt edgy Hitler or Nazi jokes.

Seems like the countries and regions that were more brutalized by the Japanese invasion, such as China and Korea, tend to be less tolerant of either Nazi or Imperial Japanese symbolism. In contrast, Thailand's government during WW2 signed a treaty with the Japanese Empire, but managed to maintain control most of their government and military.

Taiwan also seems to view the period of Japanese colonization more favorably, as it was a backwater province under Qing China rule, but the Japanese colonizers pretty much created the industries there. There was also an incident a couple of years ago where a school held a mock Nazi rally that got so much international backlash that the principal resigned.

Time to stop lying. It was the KMT that started the civil war by trying to massacre the CCP, refused to fight the Japanese invasion until Chiang was forced at gunpoint, then fled to Taiwan with money looted from the Chinese treasury. And then they placed the entire island under martial law, ran a right wing terror campaign including assassinations, and even massacred a bunch of Vietnamese refugees in Leiyu which they still deny to this day.

And how dare China maintain a large military, when the US is the one surrounding China with military bases which can strike at any moment?

And let's not forget the fact that the US helped the head of Unit 731 escape justice, and even rehabilitated war criminals like Shinzo Abe's grandpa, simply because he was pro-American.

Taking the nuance completely out of it all together.

Because the other side does have people who support said terrorists, and while those people have been condemned, that condemnation has been completely drowned out as far as this board is concerned with the constant Israel bashing.

You aren't fooling anyone. You're the only one here putting words into people's mouths by claiming that any criticisms of Israel's far right government equates to supporting Hamas. You remind me of the GWB era nationalists claiming "you're either with us or with the terrorists".

That's cultural. People as a society saying "I will hold onto my trash and throw it out responsibly in order to maintain social order"
Their concept of social responsibility is MAGNITUDES stronger than any American sense of "social responsibility"

I wish we had that. That level of consideration to others in public, civic and social responsibility taken seriously by MOST of the populace

But there are plenty of things wrong with Japanese society. Their long work hours, strict hierarchies, and slowness to adapt to technological changes. And that's not to mention the government's continued denial of their WW2 war crimes and hardline stances against immigration contributing to the aging population.
