Raisin Hell > Original Gangster > Hes The DJ Im The Rapper My case for Clube de Esquina: It's probably a long shot to convince you guys to choose an older foreign language album, but I've spent a lot of this year investigating classic records that I had overlooked until now, and Clube de Esquina was the absolute best of the lot. This is one of the most important Brazilian pop records ever, and an amazing blend of psychedelic pop, folk, rock and latin rhythms - like a South American version of Abbey Road or Forever Changes. There's so much variety and joy in this record, I absolutely adore it. I'd be fascinated to see what people think, and it's perfect for this topic too - the track rankings could be really diverse and interesting! Topic | Rank the Tracks 137: FKA twigs - Magdalene (+ Sade results) |
Giggsalot 10/22/23 2:16:54 PM #18 | Magdalene isn't an album I return to especially regularly, perhaps due to its emotional intensity, but this is one of the best records of the last decade. Twigs' songwriting and vocals have never been better - even the songs here that do things that I don't love are consistently dynamic and surprising. The production is absolutely sumptuous too - there's no one better at sound design than Nicolas Jaar, and his fingerprints are all over this. Honestly, this album has pretty much everything.

Topic | Rank the Tracks 134: Sufjan Stevens - Illinois (+ Rusted Root/The Cure results) |
Giggsalot 09/25/23 2:19:39 PM #8 | I've never been a huge Sufjan fan, but he's undoubtedly a talented guy and there are lots of things on this album that I really like (alongside a fair few that I don't). Will do my best to remember to re-listen this week, will be nostalgic for me to revisit this!
Some thoughts on my nominations: I always try to bring new types of music to these topics, and I don't recall seeing much soul/R&B yet. I've nominated three modern classics to choose from - each of them are beloved and iconic in their own ways, and I think any could stimulate some great discussion. The Weeknd's House of Balloons kickstarted an entire sonic movement and is stacked to the ceiling with anthems, FKA Twigs' Magdalene is one of the most creative, impassioned and impeccably produced albums ever, and Frank Ocean's entrancing and heartbreaking Blonde is probably the single most adored soul record of the century. Frankly, you should listen to all of them! Topic | Rank the Tracks 133: The Cure - Disintegration (+Franz Ferdinand/Rusted Root) |
Giggsalot 09/24/23 1:04:58 PM #34 | Disintegration isn't my favourite album from the 1980s, but it's almost certainly my favourite album that specifically sounds like the 1980s. I'm not even a huge fan of the Cure otherwise, but this is a top 20 record of all time for me. It's just absolutely gargantuan in scope (has any album ever made heartbreak feel quite so apocalyptic?), and the atmosphere is incredible. I will always gravitate towards the epics on the second half, but I love how much ground it covers overall - relistening to this today gave me a lovely reminder of just how perfect Lovesong is. I'm a bit disheartened to see so many others slightly disregarding the second half (even if it is understandable for a first-time listener), but reading the other opinions in this topic also emphasizes just how much there is to enjoy here - Sheep007 nominated this, and his ranking is almost the exact opposite of mine!
My personal hot take is that Pictures of You and Lullaby are the overrated songs here, so apologies to all of their fans for tanking their average ranking. 1) Plainsong 2) Disintegration 3) Fascination Street 4) Lovesong 5) Homesick 6) Untitled 7) Closedown 8) Prayers for Rain 9) Last Dance 10) Pictures of You 11) The Same Deep Water as You 12) Lullaby 1-4 are absolutely perfect, 5-9 are great, 10-12 are still pretty good --- And if you don't know, now you know. |

Topic | Rank the Tracks 130: Muse - Black Holes & Revelations (+ Mr. Bungle/Madonna) |
Giggsalot 09/03/23 2:12:35 AM #32 | Disintegration > Automatic for the People > Rated R
I feel like the consensus on BH&R is that it's the last good Muse album, but I was a huge fan of theirs when this came out, and to me it always felt like their first bad one. this marks the point where their desire to be space-age Radiohead began to be overtaken by their desire to be space-age Queen, and I just don't vibe with that at all - everything since has been borderline horrendous to my ears. I love Map of the Problematique (their last top tier song), and Cydonia is very fun in a brainless way, but nothing else here does much for me at all. it would feel a bit arbitrary and unfair for me to rank this in detail, so I'll leave it to the fans (p.s. I also wouldn't have included Glorious, but what Fool says goes!) --- And if you don't know, now you know. |
