People who really like it seem to be ones who know (or think they know) why Scott made it humorous.

The film rides this juxtaposition of tones until Scott pulls the rug out from under to remind us that laughing at powerful buffoons can be quite dangerous and deadly.

By the time he rolls Napoleons death toll, it has become clear why we have to tell Napoleons story now the story of a brutal but buffoonish megalomaniac who could never admit defeat, who aligned himself with common men and became their unlikely hero, and who waged war compulsively in the name of France but France as an idea more than an actual country with real people. Does he remind you of anyone?

Napoleon is an extension of the ideas that Scott played with in The Last Duel, weaponizing period storytelling as a tool for contemporary social commentary and satire. He pulls it off with thrilling aplomb here, using tactics that the general himself would approve: a sneak attack, hiding a sharp spear of a message behind this hysterical historical romp, allowing him to skewer right into the heart of the matter. That Scott pulls it off with such style should come as no surprise.

In the early scenes, Napoleon seems to be another of Phoenixs taciturn, unnervingly volatile, enigmatically damaged, violent men. The difference is that this Napoleon, with his bloat, scowls and consuming needs, often resembles nothing as much as an angrily petulant baby, one whose cruelty and pathological vanity make the horror he unleashes unnervingly familiar.

I liked him more when he was part of one of those Key and Peele football player names sketches.

I was way more bothered with something else they did in the recent garbage update. The download thing was annoying but I wasn't as bothered by it as the other stuff because it's so much worse

Fuck. What else did they do? I just updated an hour ago.

And don't get me started on the fucking "tab groups" they keep on trying to force on me in their mobile app.

Latest update prevents downloads from going to the bottom of the screen. They did this before, and it could be fixed with a flag, but that flag is now gone.

Thankfully someone on Reddit shared a weird way of fixing it...until Google tries to unfix it with the next update.

Been sick with something non-Covid. The under-the-tongue (or up-the-butt) thermometer I've had forever decided to die on me and I definitely didn't have any of the weird little batteries it takes lying around. But $20 on Amazon and one day later and this odd looking thing with instructions to aim at my forehead arrived.

So I did and wtf it took my temperature in one second without touching me?! This is like jumping from a flip phone to the newest iPhone. Aliens are real.

Reading is hard isn't it. The mistake is that Nintendo needed to upgrade the internal components to allow games to run smoother. They didn't and just made the screen shiny. Now everyone is banking on them to release the Switch 2 to fix things they should have done the first time.

That's fine. But the topic isn't about what people wish Nintendo had done differently. It's about mistakes. For Nintendo, it's a clear win. They got a bump in sales and other than a few grumblings from the media and gamers, their reputation was unharmed.

I'm going to argue the opposite. Yes, they made some mistakes, but they were trying at the time to push something that wasn't done before. I would argue that the Switch OLED is their worst mistake. The OLED screen definitely was an improvement, but if we compare it to the jump between the 3DS and the New 3DS, the transition is laughable.

They upgraded the external appearance, which is fine, but the internals were left almost untouched, outside of a better battery. It's still running the same 4 gb of memory, when even the base Steam Deck is running 16. It doesn't need to run 16, but at the very least 8. You can buy a handheld device and emulate Switch games for the same price and they can in theory run better than natively on the Switch itself.

Where was the mistake? Most Switches sold are now OLED. It made Nintendo money. It wasn't ever intended to be anything more than what it is.

Syphilis during pregnancy can cause tragic outcomes, like miscarriage, stillbirth, infant death, and lifelong medical issues. Newborn syphilis occurs when mothers do not receive timely testing and treatment during pregnancy.

New CDC data reveal that more than 3,700 babies were born with syphilis in 2022, which was more than 10 times the number in 2012. The increase in newborn syphilis follows rising syphilis cases among women of reproductive age combined with social and economic factors that create barriers to high-quality prenatal care and ongoing declines in the prevention infrastructure and resources.

Key findings:

Almost 9 in 10 cases of newborn syphilis in 2022 might have been prevented with timely testing and treatment during pregnancy.

More than half were among people who tested positive for syphilis during pregnancy but did not receive adequate or timely treatment.

Nearly 40 percent were among mothers who were not in prenatal care.

One of the biggest risk factors for syphilis for some people is where they live. According to previous CDC data, in 2021, more than 70 percent of the U.S. population lived in counties considered to have high rates of syphilis among reproductive-age women.

Well my grandpa literally died from COVID a month before the vaccines were made available. So it couldn't have been the vaccine.

It's totally normal for people with no pre-existing conditions to die suddenly when they are at the peak of their health. You're right, it's totally covid19 and not the Safe and Effective everyone got. Meanwhile people without the Safe and Effective are strangely just fine. It's honestly not fair! I too worship at the altar of big pharma. They would never rush out a product in order to make a profit and then cover up unexpected side effects and blame the disease as the cause. Never! It's a legit concern. The life expectancy of an 80 year male is seven years. While he doesn't have anything near the diminished mental capacity that Republicans like to pretend he does, I don't think he is as sharp as he used to be. And when you're 80, declines can happen rapidly. Reagan was a pile of pudding for his second term.
